Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Those are pretty good mounts. Id say that or the adm. You could save a little cash and get the armalite 30mm mount.

One thing tho. Are you sure you need it that far forward? I think most of those extended mounts were designed for the Trijicon TR-21 that has a very long eye releif.

I have plenty to go around brother.

Awesome, cant go wrong with Armalite
I just prefer DPMS platform because of all the different parts mfg.

AL

James,
I had a Bobro mount for my MA-Ten
It is bad ass the best QD Locking system out right now.
Its like a vice once its locked on.
You can carry your stick around by the scope if you wanted to with no worries.

But I got rid of it for rings so that my scope sat as low as possible.
IIRC when I was researching 1 pc mounts the Bobro was one of the lowest if not the lowest.

Youll like it.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

What do they use for targets at Manatee? Are they steel or do I need to bring some paper to shoot at? I don't want to be the guy who shows up unprepared.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

They have some small 4 and 5 inch spinners on the left berm at 500m and on the right they have, hopefully still have, a 8 inch plate on that berm. They used to have two, but unless they fixed it, the second one was destroyed the last time we were there.

I usually bring my own steel targets when I go, just be sure to let the RO's inspect them before putting them out. I also beleive you when putting out your own steel it needs to go all the way back to the 500m berm.

You get one target with you entry fee, then resurface your target with whatever targets you want.

Laters,
Ren

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

You lads still inclined to head over there tomorrow? Looks like a pretty rainy night giving rise to a rainy and windy morning. Should clear up by late morning/early afternoon.

I'm trying to decide if its worth heading down there.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Windy and possible rain.....I need more practice in the wind anyways.
But I can do without the rain
Punishing steel at distance is so damn fun....
cool.gif

I will still be heading down regardless

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

QQ, no more 308. I might grab a bolt 223 later on though. It'll be cheaper to shoot than my 260.

Reloading components are here. Still waiting for my scope and rings.

QQ, I know it's going to be different on every rifle but in your experience does the 139 Scenars like to jump or touch the lands?

Man it looks like crap outside. I hope you'll are having fun with the wind.

Take care everyone.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Joey,

I have no clue on the .260/6.5s at all as I haven't yet taken the plunge!

I really don't get too bold on cartridge lengths as I still load for multiple rifles and thus limit myself to magazine lengths in my .308s and .223s.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

guys you all missed out on a great day of shooting, was a little windy, but it was a head wind(only about 30-35mph from what Mickey said).
AL it was fun today smashing the steal @565yrs with the 308 & 6.5 Grendel,I even got that little bastard @1000yrs a few times with the grendel.Could not of got it done with out you thanks for the spot work and the brass

note-looks like nobody around here in florida like to shoot in the wind, only one other guy out shooting at a distance today and he was shooting a 50cal

well hope to see you guys out next time

James

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I got talked out of going by the missus. I knew I'd miss a good day shooting.

Where can I get some good, steel targets? I'd like to get out to Manatee in the next month and hate to be the guy who shows up without all his gear.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I bought mine from bigdogsteel.com

Ive got two 45 percent ipsc targets and 4x4 hangers. Ive been trying to get someone to buy a bigger one...hint..hint (66%).... so we can have something a little bigger to put out around the 7 to 8 mark.

Hope to catch you guys next time!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Ren i was talking to Mickey today about the swingers on the right and how they are falling apart and maybe fixing the next time we meet up.He said that it would be ok just let Gene know what i wanted to do,So there is a meeting March 17 I'm going to try and get out there to address the steel targets.Just let me know if you dont mind lending a hand

also the wife tryed to talk me out of going too,I said I would just have tough it

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Id be all in to help, but Ill be working that whole weekend of the 17th.
frown.gif
Thats how come I will not be able to go shoot either.

For those permanent targets out there, you would almost have to make the target and frame out of ar-500 to make if dumbass proof. Ive got a shorter 4x4 that I think I will trim up into a point so we can hammer it into the ground/berm at 565 so we can spot our hits/misses easier.

Was the target on the right still in shambles today?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

the target on the far right was down completely, just the 4x4 post were left.I'm thinking we are going to have to stack 4x4's front to back with a 2x4 spaced between the two or something like that.So that it can really take a lot of punishment before having to be fixed or replaced

Youre welcome for the brass brother and Ill spot anytime,as soon as I get a new variable scope so I can dial down that mirage and actually spot hits on paper at 100yds.
The SS has got to go...This is why I dont like looking through nicer scopes...
cry.gif

Good to see you Good times for sure.
That 6.5 at 1k, very very nice shooting dude.

Had a blast lobbing rounds to 565 with the AK
Next time Ill bring my 9x kalinka scope and see if I can do Minute of Man out to the plates.

When is the next day gentlemen?

AL

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

QQ, I though you already have a 260 because you were talking about it before I left. I guess not.

Anyways I just received my scope still waiting on rings though.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

So how does Sunday April 1st or Sunday April 15th sound for the next outing,on-call the weekend of the 8th

Also if i was to get a good deal on a stripped ar-10 lower what should i go with a 260 or 308?I know most of you guys are going to say you can never has to many 308's,but i do like how the 6.5 perform.

How about an FN? I'll give you a better deal than listed
wink.gif

Plus you can try it out before buying.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Extremly plug n play. If your planning on running the AICS, get high enough rings, Like 1 inch high rings, so your not craning your neck to get a good check weld / eye relief. Plus you can easily put a muzzle brake on the AAC/SD series. Surefire comes to mind.
cool.gif

Then there is Joeys FN that shoots damn nice too! Try before you buy is nice... you could swap between it and my AI to see what stock you like better.

But.... I wouldnt be so eager to get rid of the MA-TEN bro. Being able to drop 10 rounds on target very quickly has its advantages!

So far the 15th is still looking good! Ill be sure to bring my steel this time around. James let us know what you need to repair thier steel target on the right berm.

Good lord maybe I should stay home on the 15th....

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Al, I think you would've really like the FN... Ha! Just kidding man, looks like a good trade congrats!

Mrhog, I can't this weekend. Besides I still need to do some development.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Would like to make a day of it,but I'm only go to make it out for the annual meeting and to talk about fixing the steel at 565.

Plus I broke my .308 resizing die and i have nothing loaded,so have to order another one unless someone here has an extra one.

Awesome! Maybee we will see you on the 15th?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

On April 15th?

Why is it I feel like there will be ample reason for me to seek an outlet involving steel smashing on the 15th of April...Something about April 15th that leaves me frustrated and stressed out...What was that...

Oh by the way, tax returns, quarterly estimates or extensions are all due on the 17th this year!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

BigDogTarget.jpg

I built two stands this afternoon for the targets I bought earlier this week. 4 X 4 base, mortised to inlet a cross member at the base,(also a 4 X 4) and the vertical 2X4s. Cross head member is a 2X4 rabbeted into the upper 2X4s.

Base is 24" deep and 30" wide. Posts are 75.5" tall.

It's pretty stable agianst hammer blows but I'm thinking I'll scrounge some EMT (electrical metal tube), from the sparkies on the job, and use them as ground stakes, (driven into the ground)screwed to the vertical posts.

We'll see!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Yes sir!

Everything is screwed together with either medium to long ass (That's technical, construction parlance) 2.5" or 5", course thread, Phillips drive screws. The bases are going to stay assembled but the verticals and top rail amount to a total of 12 screws that will come right out. And right back in. And out. And in, and out. In-Out, In-Out, etc.

Honestly, I think we can all agree this is over built and will be surprised if the upper portions aren't shot to shit on the first trip!

Again, like our friend Dirt Dart ( How the fuck is he BTW???), I'll bring spare parts!
