Has anyone successfully buit a SAUM or WSM on an AR10 that runs well and doesn't beat itself to death? I'm interested in something like this, mainly to push the hunting range of my AR10 into the 800-1000yd range.

I can't find much info on the subject, any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

It's been done, but they were few and far between. SAUM would be more realistic as they are shorter than the WSM.

In all honesty, you can achieve the ranges you state with a .308 by using a long range bullet such as 168 gr. Nosler LR AB, Hornady 178 ELD-X, Barnes LRX 175 gr., Berger 155-185 gr. (several options). You won't have the energy, obviously, but it will work.

If that fails, Nemo Arms makes a .300 Win Mag (full length) AR type rifle.

I agree that it is technically possible with a .308 but I really would like more horse power at those ranges. I will take a look at the Nemo offerings and I do have other rifle to fill this role, I just thought it may be a fun project but with the lack of information I feel it's going to be a lot of trial and error and I'm not sure I want to travel that road.

A friend had a 7saum built up in the large frame AR. It malfunctioned too much. He messed with the buffer weight and had a adjustable gas block. I personally wouldn't try it. I think having something designed for a magnum cartridge and already finessed from the factory is by far the best way to go.

There are .338LM semi's that look a lot like AR's to me.

Cobb Mfg. used to make an M100 through M400 IIRC, and each was bigger and would accept larger rounds. It was also modular. Anyway, I'm positive one or more of them did what you want. But just like other companies and projects they bought out, it died the moment Bushmaster got their hands on it. Can't tell you how well they worked, if it's worth hunting one down, etc.

Olympic Arms (yeah, I know) makes/made short magnums for regular AR platforms, but I forget which ones. I wouldn't want the rifle anyway, but if they can make it I'm sure you can.

You could probably use the AR10 platform to build your own. If the round will fit in a magazine somehow and feed in to the barrel (may take some tweaking and custom work) I'm sure it would work. Back when .50Beo and a few other large bore AR chambers were getting popular, Tromix I think built a .458WinMag and/or .450Marlin off an AR10. Expect it to show more wear and tear than other rifles, because like the .50Beo, I'm sure any hard recoiling round isn't good for some of the parts, most notably the bolt lugs (which you may need custom cut?). You may think it wise to use heavier duty receivers, but all the lugs and such are practically identical so with the Beo, I just used a Mega lower. If it beats up the AA upper or Mega lower, I'll just swap 'em out. I don't shoot the Beo much though, so it's never been a problem.

Contacting Tromix and seeing what they did would probably be a good idea and you may learn something about doing it.

Unless buying a factory rifle that works and one with a warranty, like said above, it probably wouldn't be worth it as it would probably malfunction more often than not.

Steve,

Did you or he ever post a pic of it here? I know I've seen one or two over the years. Not much in the way of feedback as to how they did.

I can't remember.

It was a frustrating project for my friend. Semi auto's sure suck if they aren't reliable.

Speaking of that, myself and that same friend bought twin Olympic Arms 243WSSM's. His was somewhat reliable but mine wasn't. After that I bought a DPMS 243 that was very reliable but it was a 1 moa rifle if that.

Just found out that the Benelli R1 comes in 338WM and I think 10 round mags are available. I want one, lol.

OP some are still being made by custom shops, but I was warned that all of them use extremely hard to come by extractors which break often and then you are basically SOL. So my advice would be to avoid them like the plague. If you want a semi-auto magnum, the best bet by far is a Falkor Defense Petra in 300 Norma Mag: https://www.falkordefense.com/rifles/norma/
