Shot the 8" circle out to 500 yards with the load I was testing, until I ran out of that load. I did shot a 2 inch, 3 shot group, at 350 yards. It was great having a 600 yard range to myself. Got to shoot at 50 yard increments from 100 to 500 yards. I did have to drive down the the target each time after 200 yards to see the hits.

Good luck

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Sounds like a blast. Do you have any steel targets? They are a great target for instant feed back. You can see and hear your hits. Seems to be alot of fun. That is some good shooting. What caliber are you shooting?

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Unfortunately, no steel allowed on the range I was using. I was shooting 155 Scenar, with a hot load of H4895, in a .308W. I wish I could say that I shoot like that all the time, but not really. Thanks for the compliments.

Jerry

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

The 155s shoot good. That is what I shoot in my 308. I shot my 243 with 115 at 600 today. There was an 10 to 15 mph wind. Here is a video of some of it. Good shooting

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I shot 600 yards and 1k. I was okay with my 600 group but not happy at 1k the wind started to come in and I was shooting about 1.5 minutes low.

I'm debating on talking off right now to get a little more shooting in and see if I can better yesterdays group. I'm still developing a load from my gun. I've decided on the 208 A-max (.300 WM) but not final on the powder.

The white tape is covering up the holes, I have very little horizontal error but a lot of vertical "stringing"

The target is pretty tore up from rock splatter.. when the bullet impacts it sends off pieces of rock like shrapnel

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Still not to bad for 1k. Need about 1/2 to 3/4 moa up and you should be the money. Good shooting. Try shooting a target like this. If you have a spotting scope. Sometimes you can see them at 600yds. These are call a shoot and see. I don't think they will work for 1k but 600 yes. It might save a little time.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Here is a video of my son at 7years old. He shot 10 times and hit 3 at 800yds. I dialed the scope but he did the rest. Took the video on the phone. The sound is a little loud but I was laughing my ass off that he hit the steel target.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Here is another video of My son and I shooting a 243 and a 260 at 800yards with a 7mph wind. Video sucks. We was shooting out of the back of the pickup bed. So the wind and us reloading and shooting the camera was wiggleing. Made it a little harder shooting too.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Here is my 7yr old son shooting at 800yds. Took a few shoots for him to settle down with the rifle. But he could hit the steel. Here is the video of last night.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I like to teach them safety first. Sometimes complaincy has an affect on our safety. I tell them every time they touch a firearm to check the status of the gun.
Little guy is a hand full but is a quick learner. It is pretty neat to watch him shoot. The recoil has some bearing on how many rounds he can shoot. Coming in at 60pds.
thanks

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Me and my son shot at a match this weekend. The match was at 800,900,and 1000yds. You shoot 15 rounds from each yardage. The only difference was at the 1000yd everybody shot off the bench besides us. We dont really have a bench style rifle. Even still we didn't do to bad for our 1st time. I came in at 3rd and my son came in at 5th. There was a mirage at the 900 and 1000yd. Wind was diferent out there. One minute it would blow from the east and the next from the west. Had to hold off for the wind. It was a fun time.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Have a 600yd match this weekend. Going to try the March 10x60x52 tactical scope out. I will have a little time to shoot it before Sundays match.

Switching from my S&B to this for the match. I hope I didn't screw up. I will keep the update on the new scope.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Got done with the match today. My son took 1st shooting a 779 29X. I took 2nd with a 778 28X. Pretty close. His percentage was 97.37% , mine was 97.25%. The scope works really good. At 30 power it is clear. Shot some on 60 power but the mirage held that back. Overall a pretty fun day.

Next week shooting in Iowa for a two day shoot. First day team shoot. Next day individual shoot. That was a lot of fun last time. I think this time they have steaks and drinks after the shoot.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Dar, this has got to be the most bad ass thing I have seen in a long time. People these days seem to be in to much of a hurry to find something they can get out and do well to connect with their kids. Props to you bro. God bless.

BTW, from the way its looking before long you might want your kids to be the one calling the shots come deer season. lol.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

i have talked with a guy that has held the 1000 yard world record and shoots 1000 yard benchrest all the time and he told me that if you can hold .5 moa with any gun you will be one of the top competitors and probably win most of the time. he also told me that these small groups that are world records are just luck. i believe him since he held the word record for i believe 6 years. i know that my benchrest guns are top of the line in accuracy and i am happy when i shoot .5moa at 600, so good shooting. everyone has flyers in these conditions even the most accurate guns and shooters. The conditions are always changing.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Shooting 500 yards and 600 yards. Shooting a 1000 yards is a total different game. If you shoot a 5" group at 1000yards. You would win about 95% of the matches you shot. Most matches at 1000 are 15 shots. A 2 mph wind change could drift the bullet more than 12 inches. At 1000 shooting prone I would like somebody to show me how to lay down at 1000 and call there shots still holding under 5".

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Well didn't do as good in Van Meter. My son took a 3rd and I took 4th. Pretty good shooters out that day. Shoot with Wayne Saturn. Nice guy. He shoots really good. Meet his son Steve. Seem like a great guy also. Wayne took 2nd. But pretty knowledable guy. He has been around the block a few times. Knows a few things about shooting.

Overall a great time. Steak and drinks afterwards.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I was talking with a guy at the match about my son shooting. He shot a 197 10x with bipods and rear sand bag. He said I think he set the Junior National record. So today, I call the NRA and talked with them. Apparently the junior record is 183 3X. Well my son best he has shot is 199 15X. So she look up the Seniors and it was 199 12X.
So I think if I can get the match director to mail in the paperwork. Little man claim the National Record for Junior and Senior. Not to bad for a 14 years old. Maybe the SH training is working. Thanks Hide.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Read a little more on the rules. F-Class FTR is limited to 223 or 308 bipod and rear sandbag only. We shoot a 260 with bipod and rear sandbag. So that would put us in the F-Class Open which is anything under .35 any rest. He still will get the Junior National Record but the Senior. Still pretty good.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Was the match a Registered event, or just Approved? Sounds like your son is shooting pretty well, but you have to be at a Registered event to set a Nat'l Record - and even then, expect a loooong wait for the NRA to process the paperwork. Took over a year for mine, and my wife is still waiting on hers.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I talked with the sponsor last night and he told me if he did. he would fill out the proper paperwork for the NRA. We are suppose to go over there tonight and visit with him.

What is the difference between the two?(registered or approved)

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Last match coming up next weekend. Son is going for the FTR F-Class National Record with my 308. Been working up loads for that. Start shooting this weekend and seeing how they will perform for him.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Sorry I missed your post before... NRA Registered matches are functionally the same as Approved matches, but tend to be bigger events like state, regional or national championships. An Approved match might get away with being essentially a one-man show - one person can function as match director, stats officer, rules judge, chief cook and head bottle washer
wink.gif
Some of the nit-picky details might be glossed over (depends on the club). A Registered match technically requires a designated referee, separate from the match director, who cannot be a shooter in the competition and who is supposed to submit a separate report on the event to the NRA. Plans are supposed to be made for selecting a jury of the shooters if there are any conflicts/quibbles over the rules. Some provisions should exist for checking rules compliance - in the case of F-Class, weighing the guns would be nice, but short of FCNC I haven't seen it yet.

The short version is that the NRA gigs the sponsoring club for $5.50 of your entry fee instead of the usual $4.50 for administrative record keeping.

Good luck at your match,

Monte

Sons shooting 600 yards at a 12" steel circle target. My 14 year old shoots 3 rounds in 10 seconds and hits all 3 times at 600 yards.
