I saw this posted elsewhere.... why are empty shotgun shells called Hulls?

Anyone know the history on this term?

I believe empty brass shells were still shells or brass... at some point, maybe when the industry switched from all brass to brass base and paper upper, the spent shotgun shell became a Hull.

Anyone know the Orgin of the term?

Brass cases 12 gauge ammunition was issued during ww1 for the trench guns after it was discovered that the paper hulls swelled and deteriorated when wet. The brass case became obsolete with the invention of plastic shot shells.

You shell peas. That's removing the peas. Once removed, the shell is called a hull. Similar usage of terms. I just pulled that out my ass, or did I shell it???

It used to be common for folks to unfold the top of a paperwrap ~ #5, pour a little shot out and add a round ball. Supposedly good for anything including deer. I tried it when I was a kid. Added a .490 ball up front and took a shot at a squirrel in the yard. He was at least 30 yds off, but the rd ball nailed him square, sending him flying end over end out of the tree.
