Should I switch scopes?

I recently upgraded to a T1x in a KRG Bravo chassis sporting an Athlon Midas Tac 6-24. I’m very happy with this set up. I don’t compete but like to shoot tiny groups. I stumbled on a Sightron 3 8-36x56 for sale and it’s got me thinking this might up my game. Would this be an impulse buy or a nice step up? I shoot 50-300yds now.

It’s more fun to be the guy that shoots tiny groups from the gun that’s not supposed to do it. Now back my question.
Years ago, I used to shoot a T/C Contender with a 14" barrel at a 100 yard range. Surrounded by high power shooters, I calmly shot out the 10X ring until I ran out of ammo. RO's would point out that I shouldn't be shooting on that range. But, being an RO as well they never dared to bar me. Learn to shoot what you bring. Fancy rifles don't make a shooter.

There is a good reason you see lots of sightron on benchrest and f-class rigs.

I've seen 2 that were worn out in the last few years. They were going on 20 years old and sightron still honored the warranty and sent a brand new scope.

I've got one from approx 98/99 still living on my hunting rifle. Still works and was one of the very few mil-dot reticle scopes available back then.

Do you shoot mostly from the bench at the same distance? I looked at sightrons, the glass is great but they are behind on other things like zero stops, etc. They have started a line with zero stops in the last couple of years, their reticles are not in pace with what others are developing either. I almost pulled the trigger on a 10-50x with zero stops, but for some reason I had a hard time finding one. Ended up with vortex. I still would like a 50x scope, maybe next time.

I also like to shoot and try to make tiny small groups. On my T1X I have a 6-24 Bushnell which I’ve only used out to 100 yards.

On my Tikka T3X 223 I have an Athlon 8-34 which I’ve shot paper out to 200 yards. I can still see the bullet holes.

What makes the holes much easier to see is I’m using a fluorescent poster board which I use to place my targets. I also use fluorescent dots which I focus on.

Instead of upgrading your scope, I would suggest using the fluorescent poster board and getting a nice spotting scope something like 10x60.

Just my 2 cents from another paper puncher.

I've owned a couple of the SIII 8-32x56 scopes for something like 12yrs now, one bought new, the other was purchased used from a member of another board. Have used them on a few of my LR prone & LR BR rifles, from a straight 284 Win in 3x1000 any rifle/any sight prone matches down to a couple of LR BR rifles in 6 Dasher. The optical quality is very good on these scopes, and mine have held zero & tracked very well. I've got dot reticles & .25 MOA clicks - seems like that was all that was available when they first came out. I don't know how close the parallax will focus to; the side focus isn't marked in yards. Have thought about buying another one while they're on sale, for use on a Vudoo V-22S for BR and/or F-Class, but am still undecided between a 8-32x56, or their 45x45 BR scope, or going somewhat off the deep end and getting one of the SV 10-50x60 scopes with the 34mm tube. I probably won't make a decision until/unless I'm able to look through one of the 45x45s or the SV model at a match.

I have a Midas 4.5-27 on my T1X. The limiting factor for me is ammo rather than optics. I zero mine so that the POI is the point on the floating cross, rather than the intersection - which shrunk my 100 yard groups by half to ~0.6". If you're getting 1/4" @ 100 yards, then more magnification might help. At 50 yards, I'm in the 1's and 2's with ~25X, and believe that to be my system limitation, without a particular weak link.

Thanks for the feedback. I decided on a S3 10-50x60 since Liberty has them priced so well. It will end up on a BR 223 but I will try it on the Tikka also.

What ammo are you using?

CCI SV, but I tried a ton. Wolf match shot a touch better @100 but triple the price. Eley and other expensive stuff including CCI Green Tag didn't shoot any better than the CCI SV for me. For longer range I've been running CCI Blazer - 300 and 400 yards, better vertical than the SV stuff!

FYI - I also have a Trijicon 4.5-50 MRAD, and inside of 300 yds with my F/TR rifle, I can't shoot a better group using more magnification than 25X. Beyond, I do believe it helps.

Idk if I'm missing something or maybe don't know what I'm doing but why does a person need a 50x scope to shoot @300 yards. I may be doing it wrong but 50x @300 I'm pretty sure you can see the fiber in the paper. I rarely crank mine up to 24x @1000.

I shoot 100-300 with a FFP 4-16.

If your scope tracks and there isn't something 'wrong' with it like the reticle is too thick or the glass sucks, there's going to be no real benefit of a higher power optic. Anything about 12x where I shoot will generally run into heavy mirage issues anyways.

I have no issues making hits on 5" clays we shoot at at 250+ other than having to deal with extreme spread velocities.

no 50 x it get close in on the target but not close enough to see the fibers, its nice to have when you want it and nice not to have to use all the time unless you want to got to love choices . personally love having the extra mag when friends with far more expensive scopes cannot see what they just shot and I can .

I agree a 50x is nice for long range shooting but I'm pretty sure the OP said they only go out to 200 or 300 yards. I couldn't imagine ever needing more than a 16x to shoot 300 or less and would only go up to 16x after shooting a group to see the group clearer / magnified.

I think it depends mostly on the shooter, but I do find a benefit, i.e. shoot smaller groups with a smaller aiming point and more magnification beyond 300 yards. My f/tr rifle will shoot 00's and 1's though... You certainly don't need more mag, thin reticle or tiny floating dot to shoot 1 moa or even 0.5 moa, even at 1k. I find my magnification somewhere in the 30's @600, and into the 40's @ 1000 yards.

recently bought a higher mag scope...feels like cheating in comparison to 20-25x other scopes i have

love is so much i bought 2 more high magnification
