SHTF Food?

I live on 16 acres, have some cows, chickens and a garden, our pond has turtles and fish in it and we hunt. Ialso learned how to forage for mushrooms and now I'm learning wild edibles.

I am not worried.. it's not going to be nice but doable, humans have lived 1000s years without the tools we have now, food is everywhere once you learn to recognize it.

Yes it is but,... in the first few months there will be others looking/hunting as well. People seem to forget about the city hordes that will be trying to relieve those who have prepped. After the first few months things will calm down somewhat. Don't plant a garden like you would now that's a open invitation for trouble. Plant your crops in the woods/weeds & ditch banks randomly. Most of the FSA (free shit army) will never fined them that way.

I agree, the first few weeks or months will be the ugliest, for that I have a standard size pantry, it should keep me going for a few months on normal food.
The garden is not visible from the road, in fact, most of my property is now really visible in the summer.

I actually started some guerilla garding in the woods, mosly fruit trees and shrubs, some nuts and so on.

My only concern would be I have currently 5 cows and I only have enough land to bring 2 over the winter, so I would be making lots of jerky ( I'm learning currently how to make cold sausage )

Don't forget family members with food allergies or intolerance's to certain things. And don't forget the stuff (like alcohol and tobacco etc) that even if you don't use it can be traded for stuff you do use.

VooDoo

Jesus, you guys are queers. The real answer is "squirrels", or whatever else you can catch. Jeez.

Have you ever eaten squirrel and coon? That shit is nasty!

LOL...I am a simple eater! And I don't like my foods touching each other on my plate! Drives my wife nuts.

As far as training...25 years law enforcement, MMA fighting when I was younger, still shoot a lot and train and drink a lot of beer. That it part of training also. I have just come to the conclusion that it's better to be more prepared and not need than not?

Damn, I thought only 10 year olds did that crap!

I refuse to eat coon, greasy & nasty. Squirrel, ain't bad, but preparing it in a way that makes it "not bad", is a PIA. However, we're talking SHTF, and squirrels are a renewable resource!
I know people who like to eat coons, whistle pigs, and opossums, I do wonder about their mental health.

?? I agree! I mean it will do in a pinch but I’m not a huge fan of either!

I knew a guy once that would pick up opposums off the road, yep roadkill, take them home and eat them! Some buddy of mine grandad lol. Nasty!

Speaking of road kill, I had a Great Uncle that would get rides to the VA with the local DAV taxi. He would always take a garbage bag, and ask for them to stop so he could scrape them off the shoulder of the road. Lol! Now he wasn't eating them, but wanted the pelt, but still.................most of them would tell him "no".
Yep, Ground hog=whistle pig. Skunk=Pole Cat.

What's a whistle pig?

Pole Cat.
One Decent'ed pole cat will kill more mice than 5 cats. We had one on the farm that murdered mice an rats around grain storage areas wholesale, to the point we went an got 3 more. Great pets an murdering machines,... just have to watch them around chickens but they are quick studies when/if punished.

Do you have any suggestions on good places to get ones that are a bit more likely to be good hunters?
I kind of need something badly to deal with rats (and squirrels), as suburbia is infested with them and they think they own the place.

I don't know where we got them from, as I was only about 8-9 years old when we got them. They sure liked to kill mice an rats so much, we had to find new things to kill with out 22's. Some states require a permit to own the American pole cat don't know about the Euro version though, ours was American.

Are y'all talking about a ferret?
I thought a polecat was a skunk. American polecat search brings up the black footed ferret.
I seen some videos of people with pet mink going rat hunting on farms. Those things put the hurtin on a rat infestation.

Skunk, in the US is called/referred to as a pole cat by most older folk, Euro has a version but they call it a pole cat.
Mink are also good mice/rat killer's, but like Ferrets love Chickens, an when turned loose to hunt mice/rats can not be broke of that trate that I know of.

Something I'm surprised no one mentioned is Peanut Butter. I always keep multiple large jars of peanut butter (I eat it and rotate it) and crackers on hand. Lot's of protein and essential fats in a comfort food that lasts for a long time when sealed.

Add Nutella to that, btw Google Plumpy’nut, interesting read on malnurished children in Africa

What you guys think about rice and beans stored in reused plastic sealable containers, like Gatorade or coke bottles?
For large bulk items here, we store things in 4 or 5 litre Heinz Vinegar jugs. Them ones we get from Costco where there's 2 in a cardboard box. Those vinegar bottles are strong, and considering their size/shape you can fit a LOT of stuff on a shelf.
Pinto Beans
Navy Beans
Kidney Beans
Brown Rice
Long Grain White Rice
Arborio Rice
Carnaroli Rice
Plus a number of other 'different' and/or 'exotic' ingredients that we like to keep on hand. Them vinegar jugs work great for storing these types of items. For years.

As do a particular "green, square, plastic bottle" that originally held "aloe drink". We'd saved those over the years (we preferred the sugarless one) and due to their extremely small shelf space AND their tall stature they hold a LOT of fine ingredients like lentils (there's eleventy different kinds of those to begin with) and fine pasta's such as Orzo, them tiny 'stars' and whatnot that we put in soups. And the like. Your mileage might vary, but yeah, to make a short store really long, we use bottles for food storage. Space efficient ones. Have for years.

It seems spam always comes up in these types of threads but I don't like spam!:(
You didn't read my first post did you? (Just like giving people shit, all in fun).

Have you ever been to Hawaii? Damn they LOVE that spam. They consume 7,000,000 can a year. (State population is only 1,420,000). They put it with EVERYTHING.

I am not a big spam fan, but I would eat it before a lot of other stuff.

Ketchup. Lots of ketchup.
Why you ask?
Imagine roast rat on a stick without ketchup.
Those free little packets will be the new bit coin after the grid goes down.
Ewe.... have you ever opened one of those that is 6 months old? I used to keep them in my desk drawer when I got to many at the drive through, for days when I don't get enough. Trust me, both ketchup and mustard do not last in those packets.... nasty.

Has anyone mentioned bee hives? Honey can be stored indefinitely. And I wouldn’t think anyone without the knowledge or equipment to harvest it would be too keen on stealing it. Plus it would be beneficial to the crops some have planted that rely on pollenization.

Out here you just go for a walk near any water and trees, and you'll likely find one (just keep an eye out for an abnormally high presence of bees). I suppose in some areas they are harder to find(?).
