Cool. That's what I had in mind as well. I'm not going to let a little thing like poverty keep me down!

Re: SHWW Group

Alan H, Yes I do shoot at Sheep Company Road. I like it out there quite a bit actually. Especially at this time of year, since you can see the gong at 1250. I just wish some of the other people out there would respect it, and use alot more common sense. I was talking with Gary at Fairbanks Outfitters the other day and he said Sun Targets in Moxee is really considering opening a 1000y (maybe longer) range at thier facility. If you get a chance talk to Gary about it, he is the vice president of Sun Targets.

hsss- 1700 sounds good.

Re: SHWW Group

Fairly new here, just found the link to this group in tribe's sig.

So hi. Name is Bill, bought a 110BA 338 recently and am loving shooting it so far(so is the gf). I'm working on my skills and learning to reload so I can afford to shoot more often. Trying to find a decent spot to get out to 1k+ on public lands and the search continues.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and try to contribute what I can.

Enjoy the day, looks good so far.
Bill

Re: SHWW Group

the only thing i dont like out there is the road and the garbage but its kinda the only place i know round here... anyway im from cashmere but i visit selah at least oncce a month, maybe next time i will bring more than just the .22 and we could get together and shoot! i could also prolly round up some steel

also where in moxee is sun targets?

Re: SHWW Group

Alan, definetly get ahold of me. I forgot all about the road, it is pretty shitty!! There is steel set up out there already, most people just dont know where to look. The steel is at 600y, 700y, 1000y and 1250y. It is in fairly good shape because most people dont know it is there. I really like it though because the wind can get ripping through there. There is a dried up creek bed at about 400y that the wind likes to haul ass down. All in all it isn't that bad. I will PM you my contact info, just give me a couple days notice if possible. The garbage has gotten ridiculous out there. A group of shooters normally go out there in the spring and haul off a metric shit ton of garbage. Sun targets is on Hwy 24 about 10 miles east of Moxee.

Re: SHWW Group

I just finished mowing some of the shooting lanes on the range and wind is CRANKING. I guess I'll go work on my wind doping. With constant winds I do okay(always room for improvement). However, shooting across two draws/swales, and having the targets being located up on the hillside, at time it get's purdy interesting. All good though!

Ranger you in the neighborhood?

Re: SHWW Group

Hi Bill, looks like you and I are the far north branch of SHWW. I live outside Blaine, work in B'ham. I've heard there's a spot outside Sumas where some guys from Custer Sportsmans Club shoot out to about 800 I think. I need to find out where exactly, been saying that for months, need to get on it!

Re: SHWW Group

I did some more testing on the new Hornady 30 cal 225's today. Not the best of weather for testing, but I did it anyway. My load is 76.5gr Retumbo, & ave was up to 2865fps now with a larger ES this time. I think my Lyman doesn't like my furnace running. Anyway even with the wind, & rain I was able to get 1/2 moa or better with them @ 750, & 935yd. They are little sledge hammers. Actually left dents in Abdul @ 935yd today. According to FFS these will remain SS to beyond 1600yds. & still have over 1000 lb/ft of energy past 1250yds. More testing to come.

spent the day on the road between Spokane and Seattle. I had to do some rifle business and my "gun broker" in Renton (Pinto's Guns) is absolutely golden. 600 miles round trip. No wonder my ass is so fat!

Re: SHWW Group

I've been using the .711 BC, but it's still printing high for what FFS tells me it should. Next time I need to verify the 100yd zero to make sure these print the same place as the A Max. I think it may be high by about 1/2 moa from zero which would account for that. So far a verry impressive bullet.

Re: SHWW Group

Hey McGruber -

I lived in B-ham myself for a few years. Safely getting long range in that part of the world is a chore indeed.

Is Kesselring's still going strong? I was in there pretty much any Saturday it was too wet to shoot...

Re: SHWW Group

I tried to shoot at Sun Targets yesterday afternoon after finishing up some loads in the AM. By the time I got set up, the rangemaster shut the 100yd range down due to the "high winds". Never had that happen before. Oh well, I guess I'll test those loads next weekend.

I had heard rumors they were trying to add some distance to that range, I hope I live to see it...

@ M74, Yes, Kesselrings is still going strong and is the place to purchase products. Better prices than anywhere I've seen. I just made a trip up there last Saturday and was fondling one of the S&W MP-15's.

Re: SHWW Group

Well, my latest build just went slightly out of control. I now have a TRG-42 headed to Benchmark to be re-barreled in 7WSM. Unfortunately it won't be ready in time for the Kettle Falls match.

Re: SHWW Group

Hey all, I'm somewhat new to this sub forum, but not to snipers hide.

Wanted to let you know that Magpul Dynamics will be holding Precision Rifle courses out of Yakima, WA at my old (Central Cascade Precision) venue. We've got three courses, A Special Purpose Rifle (for the 5.56 guys) and a Precision Rifle 1 and 2.

The range is challenging and I'm in the process of locating a spot to shoot beyond the 1100 yards it offers. We've got some really tricky wind conditions and great terrain features to deal with.

I hope to eventually hold a promotional match out there, but that's a ways in the future. Hope to see some of you guys in the future on the line. If you want information on courses and/or to get signed up, check out the website below.

Thanks

Man that range isn't even remotely safe to begin with! I've seen it hot with pickers in the orchards downrange! I'm not sure where they'd get 1000, but if they can it wouldn't be too bad I guess. It has come a long way though.

Re: SHWW Group

I know this is crazy timing but i am taking a survey to see what your opinions are.

So hypothetically if someone were to set up a range in central washington that had a covered shooting area and had paper & steel plates from 100-1000yds, along with a trap, pistol and archery range what do you think would be a fair annual membership price.

also note there would be some sweet barracades and obstacles to practice from available at this range.

it would be sort of a "shooters paradise" if you will.

I was thinking somewhere between $200-600 annually but i am looking for your feedback. also if you would let me know how many guys that you know not from the hide that you think would be interested in becoming members.

I am trying to do alittle market research to see if this is a viable option to cover costs.

Re: SHWW Group

Caylen,

You are correct in the fact that the 300y "Long Range" at Sun Targets is no where near safe, with the back drop!! After speaking with Gary c/o Fairbanks, if I remember correctly, and I might not be, they were talking about changing the direction of any new long range. Maybe from South to East? I am not sure, but it would be nice. At any rate I am not holding my breath for anything, wishful hoping at best.

Re: SHWW Group

Tri-county gun club in Oregon has annual dues of about $100, and has initiation fee for your first sign up. You can save a bit on dues by doing a days work for the club ($40). This club is just south of Portland, Oregon, a large metropolitan area, and they have around 3000-4000 members and it is hardly ever crowded.

I think you might want to consider how long it would take people to drive there from the large population centers. If it takes people two hours to get there, I don't think you would get as much use from members.

But, with facilities like that, you might be able to make quite a bit of money renting it out as a training facility to civilian trainers, law enforcement, charging match entry fees and so on.

Perhaps giving members a break on high end match fees (say a $100 match costing members only $75) would help get more members in.

For me, unless I can get to the range within about an hour, I have to dedicate an entire day to shooting, rather than a half of a day. Lots of people's private lives can afford them a half day's shooting, but getting a full 8-12 hours away from home is far more difficult.

I would prefer lower membership fees, and shoot in a natural setting over a highly developed setting with higher fees. I like getting out "in the bush" to shoot.

Re: SHWW Group

Hey Caylen -

I just registered for the SEP16 PR1 course. Can't wait. Now I just need to figure out a load. I've been shooting the 168 SMKs, but I hear those will have difficulty past 800 or so. I am hoping the 168 Berger VLDs might do better.

I've got a S&W MP15OR (optics ready)> Nice carbine - crummy trigger. That's easily fixed though.

Re: SHWW Group

So seriously.... how far, and how often would you drive, to shoot at a range, that had swinging steel from 200 to 1000 yds, Towers, Barricades, Movers, etc.... You just show up and shoot.....?

Spokane Rifle Club has a $100 membership fee plus a $100 annual fee. Without a consistant stream of money, as in the range being constantly busy, it seems that the range is always scratching for dollars. Even with NRA grants and the like. I think the building, labor and start-up costs are going to be tough to cover. That said, I'm very interested in finding out more of the details.

Here in South Central Washington (Prosser) I pay $90. a year for a 400 yard range with target boards set up at 25,50 100,150,200,300,and 400 yards. There are 5 covered benches and a trap machine that you can use, there are currently about 350 members.

Re: SHWW Group

Kenmore's membership is like $185/year. That's INCREDIBLY reasonable given that it offers Rifle(only to 300), Pistol, Archery, & Shotgun in a very urban environment. Granted, there's a much larger pool of shooters to draw from over here to offset overhead, but you'll have to keep your fees somewhat 'competitive' and membership 'exclusive' to draw folks from both sides of the mountains. I, for one, would be up for joining such a club for $200-$300 range,... no pun intended. Even though it's a hike to get over the hill, it would be great to have a dedicated long-range site to go to.

Where are you thinkin', Scott? Ellensburg? Wenatchee? Did you think about Mill Creek? Did I mention I live in Mill Creek? I'd be willing to pay a little more if you did something there,... but only a little more

I believe the idea of a turnkey shooting facility has merit, but agree that there has to be a balance between range fees, distance to travel, and membership numbers. With the current economic climate in the country, folks discretionary spending budgets have tightened substantially. I don't know if now would be a good time to dump a bunch of money into development.

However, when I was on the board of directors at the gun club, at times there were grant funds available for construction/expansion/improvement of shooting facilities. I don't remember if these were from the NRA or what the funding source was, but that's another potential option. I like the idea...even though depending on location, I might only get to use it a couple times a year.
