not a movie, but...

military channel,
Modern Sniper
Premieres Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 10/9c

tagline reads:

As warfare and technology advances, the tools, tactics, and techniques
of the sniper must follow. Take an inside look at today's modern sniper.

probably will be one of those "fictional" documentaries, but who knows, might turn out to be good.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

It should be alright, they taped our class for this filming. They were annoying at some points, but from what I heard they got some good footage. There is some pretty outlandish stuff they wanted us to do, but for the most part, the instructors tried to keep everything pretty straightforward.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

This looks to be a new recurring series and the schedule seems to be updated now with the premier on Wednesday December 2. First episode is entitled "Army and the following week Dec 9 is "Marines".

There is also the trailer on YouTube now: Modern Sniper trailer

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Do what I do...Turn the sound off, and enjoy the pretty pictures of cool guns.

I'm far from a firearms expert, but there really isn't much they can say I don't already know. More a reflection of their ignorance than my knowledge.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

secret math formula to shoot thru a small hole in a barracade at a target? interesting skill

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

It's only a secret to those unfamiliar with ballistics.

The bullet crosses the line of sight twice.

First while rising the bullet crosses near the rifle on it's way to maximum ordinate. That's the only distance from the muzzle that little trick will work.

The bullet intersects the line of site a second time on the downward part of its path at the target (hopefully).

Some secret....shhhhhhhhhhhh.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

There is a secret.

The secret is to make sure that when the scope is on the target, the line of the bore is above the bottom of the loophole. Otherwise things are going to get...interesting when the bullet hits the structure the loophole is in.

At Rifles Only, there are holes in various structures and supports to illustrate failure to comply with that.

The loophole discussion was interesting. What they were showing the bullet was not at max ord, it appeared that they would have been further back in the “room” so you would not have the bullet reaching its apogee and then starting to come back down. In that the bullet travels through its zero elevation between 75yards and 125 yards (assuming a 100 yard zero) you would have to be dealing with a height over bore issue before that. The one downside would appear to be the smaller the loophole and the further you are back in the room the smaller the window of opportunity you would have to work with.

All that being said it would be a interesting skill to learn.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

It's not very hard to figure out if you have some skill in manipulating a ballistic program.

If you're going to practice, I highly recommend that you start by shooting through a cardboard loophole supported by a wooden frame. And wear eye protection.

You have commented on this previously. Is my assumption correct that you are effectively creating two targets?

First one that you are passing through (the loophole) and second one being the POI?

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Damn i missed it. i will have to catch it. On a similiar note, I do enjoy that Top sniper tv comp that they show every so often.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

The International Sniper Competition @ Benning is a neat event. But having been there to spectate I'll admit that like a pro football game you get a better view on television.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Let’s say that the line of the bore is 1.5 inches below the line of sight on our rifle.

The target is at 200 yards.

You dial in your elevation to hit POA/POI.

At about 26 yards the bullet path will cross your line of sight.

So you can position a tiny “loop-hole” 26 yards to your front through which you can see your target.
(As the target range increases the “loop-hole” can be moved closer and closer to the shooter.)

The round you fire will pass through that tiny “loop-hole”.

If that “loop-hole” is at any other distance from the shooter the round will not “thread the needle”.

It’s a neat trick but of limited practical utility.

that's my sense of it.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

That's exactly how I would see it. If the loop hole is fixed at a certain yardage (say 26 yards), and your shot was further than 200 yards, you would need to lower your shooting position to account for the longer shot to fit through the loop hole (and vise versa). Or, plan to hit slightly lower on the target if the target is big enough.

The way I see it is that the loop hole is the main center point (or axis, if you call it) the bullet has to go through. So to make a shot at a certain distance, you have to align yourself to the proper height for the correct shot angle at that distance. Does that make sense?
Lindy, is this correct thinking?

Not to give any suggestions, but this would be a cool stage in a match!!

I found it somewhat interesting. Not fully engaging and not certainly as informative nor entertaining as "Top Sniper". I will wait until a few more episodes get aired before rendering full judgement. I think I understand the perspective as they didn't want to give away the whole season (run) in the first show, but it could've been less esoteric IMO. Standing by.........

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Its great that the idea of shooting threw the barrier is easy for you to figure out but just remember that in an open forum like this information is read not only by you but by people that choose to use it against coalition forces and my brothers, there is a reason that they dont go into detail about it on tv but some people feel that they have to show everyone how cool they are that they figured it out or that they have to post every single thing on the internet for all to see, some thing are best left off line, and that is why the new 23-10 is going to be classified and not for public release.

With that said do as you wish, but remember, you may have gave "JUBA" what he needed to make himself better at what he does...killing american soldiers...

Top Sniper II seems to pull you in more......This one was like a Cliff Notes version.....
I will watch the rest, I just hope they do a Top Sniper III....

I didnt see anything too fancy, looked like standard issue stuff to me.

I'll keep up on it too, give it some time.

Uhhmmmm, that's the point....NOTHING of any type of military intelligence or classified tactical nature WAS revealed. It was all just hype by the narrator.

If anything, it was counter intelligence....haji's prolly out there lining up tiny cardboard ports at various distances, trying to figger out "the infidels new secret tool of the great satan. ALLAH AKHBAR!!!!"

Silly rabbit, trix are for kids.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Well... truth be told I dont think we are the audience demographic it was produced for. Sort of like the AMA board watching a show produced on the medical field. I just shudder at the thought of the usual influx of new members the hide gets everytime these shows come around.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

It seems like a more updated version (Modern perhaps?) of the other shows repeatedly shown on the Military Channel. How many time can you watch "Sniper School" "Top Sniper" "Ultimate Weapons: Sniper Rifles" ect. It included some info on the M110 SASS, technique and effect of shooting though barriers, range estimation and measuring tools and techniques, and a quick informational from one of the "Top Sniper" champs about the M24 upgrade to 300WM. Not earth shattering info, but its more current than what else is on. Look at it this way, just how much info can you cram into one episode on the Army snipers alone. Hence the 4 part series of each divison that uses a sniper.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Was just watching "Modern Sniper- Army" on the Military Channel. Some students going through sniper school had M110s, but they were using 10-round mags, something I had not seen before. Were they just using the short mags because it was a training environment?

and possibly some kind of helmet also, just in case...LOL

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Just watched Top Sniper tonight and thought it "interesting but not riveting" too. The narrative isn't very interesting, but you still have to listen for any good information that you might not know. There is a huge variety of equipment used in competitions, less so in combat training and qualification. In the competitions I saw various Leupolds, S&Bs, and even a USO ST-10 on an AR. Not many safe queens out there, Bud!

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

The Modern Sniper segment on this evening was on Marine Scout/Snipers.

It was better than the segment on Army snipers, which featured multitudinous trigger-slapping by people who ought to know better - like Sniper School instructors.

One Marine was pulling - and I do mean pulling, not squeezing - the trigger with either his middle finger or his third finger while his hand remained on the bolt. Dunno why he might have thought that was a good idea, unless his index finger is missing, which didn't appear to be the case.

Re: SNIPER SHOW ON MILITARY CHANNEL

Beginning of the show says it’s a four part series. Did a search on my dish and on the Military Channel website and there is no mention of the next two shows being aired at least for the rest of the month. Is that all they are going to show? Looked like they had one on the Coast Guard (HITRON I assume) and I was hoping for one on LE snipers. Anyone have any intel on this?
