So you think you can shoot?

I shoot left to right, top to bottom.
What is interesting is certain lines show better accuracy than others.
Look at column 3 on todays target, consistent top to bottom.
Useful in trying to understand what you're doing right.
Shows the rifle/shooter has a favored alignment.

I'm throwing in the towel, literally.
I've been fighting with a Harris S-BR 6-9 bipod for a while now.
I know the rifle is accurate and I know the ammo is accurate,
but results off the Harris were never consistent, until this morning.

This is how I normally use the bipod...

Results on target at 50 yds ran from 0.25 groups to 0.75 groups (5 shot) very inconsistent.
I figured it was me having no skill whatsoever unless the rifle was in a one piece rest.

Then this morning I made a small change, Can you see it?

The results on target, once I figured out the slightly modified grip needed, surprised me!

All I had to do was get those stupid rubber feet off the deck, and the recoil bounce went away.
The towel, folded to put 4 layers between the feet and the bench, allows recoil slide instead of bounce.
What a difference. Worked on all 4 flavors of 17 hmr, the 17 gr ballistic tips, 17 gr hp, 20 gr hp and 20 gr fmj.
Wish I'd thrown in the towel a couple years ago. Could have saved some frustration, eh?

been using a small carpet, same results

I have found the biggest difference between rows for me as far as accuracy is natural point of aim and exact and proper eye relief. I usually will get up or at least break a position between rows.

what mods have been done to the rifle?

It's a CZ 455 Varmint, CZ single set trigger, pillared, bedded,
Mueller 8-32x44, Lilja 17 hmr bull barrel, and just to irritate the purists,
it's barrel bedded in 3 spots, with the barrel glued to the forward most point of contact.

Free floated? Pttthhhhpt!

Another day, another 150 rounds down range.
Shooting these tiny bullseyes is slowly changing the way I approach bipods.
No more tight grip, no more snug to the shoulder, no more cheekweld.
When I let the rifle slide, those 17 caliber rounds track where they're supposed to.
When I attempt to lock the rifle into my shoulder/grip and get a solid cheekweld,
my body motion throws rounds off poa. Really do like the results showing up,
when I stop forcing the rifle and let it follow through on it's own.

Now if I can un-learn the things I was taught to do,
maybe I can get those averages in the consistent 0.1's.

One of the 6mm ppc guys at the local range now uses this target to practice.
Amazing how big those tiny dot's look through a 10-60x52 March at 100 yards.

Question: Was that done off hand?
If so that was good shooting!

I should know as having been the top shooter on the top army team in 1968.

What ammo are you using?

Think I'll need to get back to the range again and see if I still can shoot like that...

Question: Was that done off hand?

If you only knew how funny that is!

At 50 yards, shooting off hand, I'd be lucky to keep it on the paper. Seriously.
I only shoot off hand to waste ammo, not hit what I'm aiming at.
When I hunt, every shot is made from a braced position, with the rifle
stabilized on a tree, fence post or my walking/shooting stick.
I'm one of those long, lanky people that that just can't stand still.

That target was shot with Hornady 17 gr V-Max.
Those rounds that are hitting 0.2+ from poa are all on me.
I keep holding the CZ like a centerfire and when I do, off they fly.
When I keep a loose hold, minimal contact and allow recoil slide,
those rounds hit where the crosshairs are.
A lot of what what I thought was wind drift, is me moving at the moment of squeeze.

Here's the target pdf again so you don't have to search.
Download, open, print actual size on 8.5x11 paper.
Let's see what you can do Walt.

siscoe308, I cant wait until you give this a go as I have been very interested in the 1710 for a while. I keep thinking they must be shooters and would love to some day have one as a varmint rifle / walk around target rifle. You should also give the 6X5 thread a go with it! Looking forward to your post. By the way how is the wind in Wyoming for rimfire shooting, I hear it never stops blowing.
