Maggie’s Socially UNacceptable Humor

The Converse fad is one I just can't understand.

When I was in school we referred to them as "birth control shoes", because you wouldn't get laid wearing them.

They are the most uncomfortable shoes I ever tried to wear. We were all really happy when we had an option.

At it's core it's the same FOMO driven demand for overhyped products that underperform like Glocks, 1911s, SIGs, FRTs

Before Nike, there was Converse. Basically the Converse fad is "OK Boomer"

FOMO for Converse? Nah, it’s fashion for fashion’s sake. Nobody missing out on something they make millions of…
I thought I'd buy some high-top chuck Taylor's to use as cheap wader boots instead of buying regular wader-boots ,HOLY SHIT BATMAN, they proud of those converse tennis shoes , didn't have my size anyway , ididnt realize that they were some kind of overpriced fashion statement, got some 19.95 walmart Chinese shit instead ,and they worked good for 4 fishing trips, but damn what happened since 1968, when I bought my last pair of chucks.

Fashion

There are tons of coworkers who have and wear every color imaginable to work, then complain about how bad their feet hurt in the morning when they get out of bed.

I learned the value of good, well made leather work boots years ago. My feet are no longer a problem.

A wise old man I apprenticed with back in the old days had some pretty good advice. Make sure your work boots and your bed are comfortable because you will spend most of your living years in one or the other.

I buy a new pair every year, keep 3 different pair at work. I stand on my feet on concrete all day, usually in a high carbon fiber dust area. Some days I swap boots during the day. Since I switched to American made boots and Darn Tough socks during the covid lockdowns, my feet have been happy.

Newest pair on the top left, others are 2 - 3 yrs old, just chunked a 5yr old pair because the eyelets finally gave way.

Those aren't barefoot shoes. These are.

I may have owned a few pairs over the years. Their KSO's are great for the beach as they keep out the sand. Have a pair of v-aquas that I use as water and gym shoes that drain.

These also would count as more of a barefoot shoe.
I have a low black and a low white.

Zero’s are almost exclusively what I wear. I can assure you, they are barefoot shoes. When I walk through some water in my work shoes it looks just like a footprint

But also yes, Vibram’s are awesome. I wear Five Fingers to the gym

These bring back some bad memories. I can still smell them and clothing that went with them.

I managed to grab an off the record set of the proper sized pant with the XL top.
Took them to a laundromat and washed them over and over to remove the charcoal.

Found a skull cap strap set for my gas mask and spent an afternoon modifying my training filter for it too.
Do you know how hard it is to get that fucker back together without it looking like it was broken into?

Had the rain boots instead of those lace up fuckers.
Also an early adopter of the Kevlar helmet.

(I miss the days of ARRS (MAC) and SAC where we didn't play chem gear games. Becoming ACC ruined all of our pleasure of laughing at those who played silly reindeer games.)

When I PCS'd, that set went with me.
Gave it all away when I retired . Don't miss any of it. Ever.

I've had Carolina hunting boots in the past. They were very comfortable.

I have a Redwing store nearby, nothing with Carolina or Double H.

Why no Redwings?

I used to buy Redwings until I had a bad pair and they refused to do anything about it. This was back in the late 80s, so everything was done via US mail, boots were literally falling apart after 6 months and they would not warranty them.

I switched to locally hand made and Justin American made boots until they moved everything to Mexico and it was never the same.

Boot Barn, Cavenders and maybe some others, but what ever size you wear in Double H or in Carolina, will be the same in the other.

We specialized in reindeer games in the USMC.
