New member here chiming in.

I've been a lurker and have come across several instances where people have been reamed for potentially offering services while not being a site sponsor.

I'm not stirring the pot but I'm quite confused as to the agressive approach to it all. I understand the concept of site sponsors and understand that support for this site is more important than anything.

Anyways I'm just curious as to why the rule is so aggressively enforced. Not looking for trouble or anything. Just a better understanding.

Thanks for the direction.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Look at it this way....if you were a sponsor on this site, and someone new came along and offered the same service as you but didn't pay for the privilege how would you feel?

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Have to say I find it a little odd that you are a lurker (sounds like you have been watching for some time now) and you decide to join in for this topic.

Not only join in but start your own post about it. Not saying you are affiliated with whatever "prospective sponsor" sparked your interest, just looks odd.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Sorry if it looks suspicious. No harm meant truly. Just looking for a discussion about it.

I certainly see the point where you don't want a horde of people offering the same service when the sponsors that pay for the right to have their name up front and available get slowly pushed back. No problem with that.

Thinking about it further it may just be easier to enforce with an iron thumb than play catch up on things when they get out of hand, which I'm sure they would.

As for a private message, that wasn't my goal. I enjoy hearing opinions and different viewpoints. I know the rules. You don't see me anywhere offering any services. And I won't. I respect the rules as they are established. Just curious as to the manner in which they are enforced as I said.

Nothing but respect is desired with my post and question. Please do not think otherwise.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

I edited my initial post removing some words which weren't intended to appear contentious, but after re-reading very much could be taken as such.

However where is the line. I am starting to do coatings on the side but am careful in mentioning it on forums such as this. I am nowhere near being an established certified coater by any means, but everybody needs to start somewhere. I cannot afford to pay this site yet, even though I would love to eventually be a site sponsor.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

I'm thinking you are right. Although I'm pretty sure there are no more secret advertisements or contentious words. Basically just questions so we'll see how it goes. Worst case the moderators can close it and it can disappear. It isn't exactly keeping me up at night

. But curiosity is said to have killed the cat.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Here's a question for you.... Do you really expect us to believe you had no alterior motive of getting guys to contact you for coatings in your original thread?

By your own admission you claim to understand the need for site sponsors...ergo it should be a relatively simple concept too understand that disallowing non-site sponsors to advertise like you did is also necessary.

If you want to play you gotta pay...A very simple concept that should not need a whole thread to explain to you.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

I'm just gonna let this thread die. It came across from the beginning improperly, and it's not worth trying to fix it now. Sorry for the misunderstandings.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Brandon,

I'll give you the benefit of doubt and my 2 cents. Site sponsors not only pay but contribute an awful lot of high quality content and advice especially to less experienced shoorters.

They are clearly passionate about the industry and over time have built strong reputations and followings. Whenever I need to buy something i will first and foremost go to a site sponsor for several reasons:

a) to pay them back for their time, effort and investment. We all want them to succeed.
b) they virtually all have great customer service and i know i'll be taken care of.
c) its my way of giving something small back when in reality i've taken so much for free.

Call me old fashioned, loyal or dumb if I can get a marginally better deal elsewhere but when a site sponsor posts a detailed product review, or posts that he has certain items in stock he's asking for our business in a polite and informative way. I like that and am prepared to support it.

Re: Sponsor sensitivity

Tj,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't even consider the content value that sponsors add. That there alone would be worth protecting them as much as possible. That makes complete sense.

I initially was puzzled by how protected they were but as you said the value of content and information received very much requires it. Seems logical and necessary to me.

Thanks again tj.
