Im thinking about buying a Remington 700 SPS Tactical and i was wondering if the 20"barrel with a 1:12 twist is good enough to shoot at 800-1000 yards? any info will help, pictures too. thanks.

Re: SPS Tactical

Yes. Many people prefer the AAC 1:10, but 1:12 will stabilize 175s. Search. The SPS Tacs are probably the most popular rifles on this forum. Volumes could be written from the posts.

Re: SPS Tactical

I would get the SPS varmint and swap out the stock for something better. Bell Carlson light tactical for 250$ for instance. Then consider bedding it and have the barrel re-crowned if the factory crown is ugly (probably not necessary never know though).

SPS tactical is a neat rifle but 20" factory rem barrel @ 1k might be an exercise in frustration even with hot handloads.

likely to be well over 2 moa at best at a 1000 but a 175 SMK will do that, even if it is subsonic use a 5ft x 5ft target and have fun, problem is more getting a place to actually do it

Re: SPS Tactical

I've actually owned both. I shot the SPS to 800 yards with good results using 155 gr Palma MatchKings. I recently shot my AAC at 1000 yards using 175 gr MatchKings. The results were a little mediocre but I was just using a load I had thrown together with what I had on hand so I could do some shooting that day. The load only grouped about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. Here's the results from that session. [video:youtube]http://youtu.be/Y74VkWlXQhc[/video]

The cost diff is between 50-100 depending on where someone goes. For that little bit extra, a person gets a faster twist (better to stabilize 175s) , threaded barrel, and in my opinion a better shooting rifle.

I will agree 100% on needing to change the stock out ASAP on either model.

I have the standard tactical, it is no longer stock, having replaced the following; Stock, trigger and firing pin assembly. With that said it will consistently group 5 under .75 moa all the time and I will occasionally get freaks in the .3's at 100y with 175 and 180 match king’s. At 1000y it will hold just under 1moa vertical, horizontal… depends on how well I read the wind conditions.

At distance:
700 yards 175smk@2550fps handload. Held .5 mil wind. 5 shots 8" spread counting the one I pulled low, 4 were less than 5". Not bad for a factory Remington Tactical and 10x nikon... (can of chew for reference

This picture is a bit dated as the rifle now wears a B&C light tactical and 10x Mk4 m2.

It’s a great little rifle, and brought me this guy home from Montana

Shot was ~150-175 yards, I aimed for the spine and hit where I aimed. I was using 168 berger vlds at 2640fps at the muzzle.

How it looks now.

I have a SPS Tactical in .308 and I believe that all the sps tacticals are a 1-10 twist.

top group is with tac and 175 SMK's
bottom group is with varget and 178 amax's
all groups shot from prone off of bipod

Re: SPS Tactical

The SPS Tac AAC is 1:10 threaded muzzle @ 20", the SPS Tac is 1:12 @20". It DOES NOT MATTER a bit for 175gr projectiles.

FWIW The M24 uses 1:11.25 (alledgedly optimal for the 175) and the M40 uses 1:12, both fire 175s to great effect, one is and the other is closer to 1:12 then 1:10.

Re: SPS Tactical

I have a 700 SPS Tactical. I shoot 175 SMKs at the moment, looking to move to the 178 amax due to poor hunting performance this winter.

With a stock and bed job it is a half minute gun. I shot 860 yards with it and was able to hit a 25" target every time. I haven't had a chance to take it any further yet.

4.503 actually.

a = 36 in/yd * 860 yd * sin(0.5MOA/60)
