Got mine and so far so good. Love the solid feel, love the reticle and glass is awesome. I'll try to get some pics up later, but I have one issue. Is anyone else having trouble with very sharp edges on the illumination and side focus dials? Between the stiffness of the dials and the sharp edges,(magnification ring is very stiff too) these are just plain uncomfortable/unpleasant to use. I do a lot of fabrication and welding so my hands and fingers are far from "sensative".
Anyone else?

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

I wouldn't call the edges of the dials sharp, but precisely cut and easy to get hold of without slipping ( maybe with gloves on ). Most of the scopes I've used the magnification ring is a little stiff to move but there's probably a good reason for that, like not moving from recoil and stuff like that. Just my two cents worth. If I'm not wrong I think that SWFA recommends moving the elevation and windage knobs full travel about 50 times each to get them seated correctly and broken in.

They'll shave plastic. Perfectly cut isn't necessarily a trait I want on a control knob, especially one that's hard to turn. Of all the scopes I've had, these are the worst to get a grip on. With it's spacing, the fluting on these controls is about worthless for grip and IMO thtey may as well be smooth. Fluting is for table legs. The finish on these knobs won't last long either with those sharp edges.

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

Elevation, windage and magnifacition all run well and tracked perfectly on the first couple twist. I agree the illumination is kind of a pita but I dont really use it, parallex turns just fine. No skin removed by anything yet and my hands have gotten jello soft lately.

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

I finally put mine on a rifle today and while I experienced the issue with getting the knobs centered after zeroing (can live it), I had no issues with any of the knobs. For me a cat tail is going completely unnecessary, and I really side the side adjustment, and found it comfortable enough to grab and not resistant. I could not see the illumination while it was cloudy and raining, but it is not something I would ever use in the daytime. The magnification for me seems as easy to turn as my USO, I really do not see what the fuss is about.

While I definitely prefer the GAP reticle to the diamonds, I am thrilled with the product I received.

It's possible that a handfull of knobs/rings didn't get deburred or edge-finished and ended up on a few scopes. I ordered on the second day so mine is from the early part of the first batch. I've heard other comments about stiff adjustment rings, so maybe SWFA will take care of this. If they weren't so stiff it wouldn't be as much of an issue but for me, it's little details like this (nicely finshed parts) that really stand out on a quality product vs. something shoved along on a production line. I still think it's an excellent scope and a great value.

That's very possible. I hope so. I was torn between a NF or SS. I had finally made my mind up on a SS.

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

My parallax and illum knobs are fine, but that doesn't mean some didn't skip a step in processing. I just bought a great set of mountain bike wheels for $150 less because the hub anodizing wasn't as shiny as usual. Stuff like that happens. I'd see what they have to say @ SWFA.

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

Mine has edges that could be considered a little sharp but it does not bother me a bit. I could see if your hands are a little soft it might be a problem.

Just messin with ya.....

Re: SS 5-20 HD question...

I cleaned my rifle today after yesterday's shoot. I will agree that the illumination and parallax knobs are sharp, but being that the rotation is stiff, I wouldn't have the caps any other way. I actually like the sharpness. Now, if the knobs were less stiff, then I wouldn't mind if they were not as sharp. Either way, I like the feel of the knob.

Different strokes for different folks.
