That's by far the biggest PITA with the XLR, I'm using AI mounts on mine for the Hensoldt, the 30mm one should work with the SS but it's an 18moa mount, so a 20moa base and 18moa mount "might" work out. I can test it for you in about a week, I've got a comp coming up and I'm not moving scopes around right now. </div></div>

Much agreed on the ring sensitivity of the XLR, but I still love it! Not to throw another wrench into the mix, but the OD of the objective is 60mm's, but what about with a Butler Creek cap on it? I hate to dig this horse up and pound on it, but I'd like to get the ring height right the first time...any info, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

It was reported by Frank that a Nightforce 50mm shade tube fit the SS 5-10x50mm scopes. So if that's the case, my Nightforce 50mm tube is 59.1mm in width without the covers. With the cover on, the cover stretches out to 64.3mm (right at 2.5"). That doesn't include the hinge or the cover tabs. Just the basic diameter you would need to know for clearance.

The cover is a snug fit but with a little warm water they slide on with ease. So the SS objective cover will likely be the same or at most a size larger.

For the guys above, I have BC caps that fit it, I'll double check what size they are and confirm the OD of the bell tonight.

ok Goin Hot, look I know how to read, but the purpose of my question was due to the fact that all who are talking about this scope seem to know a lot about it. I figured maybe someone could answer my few questions. apparently its just easier to say go find out for yourself.. I thought forums were for discussions and on occasions people helping others...

Here are two links reviewing SWFA scopes. They do not review the 5-20x50 itself, but they review the SWFA brand. I have been looking at buying one of these scopes two but also had questions on quality.

I spent some time with the new Super Sniper at the range yesterday.

So far, I am impressed. Glass is very good for the price (better than I expected for anywhere near this amount of money). Knobs tracked perfectly.

For now, it was sitting on my 6.5 Grendel, but I will move onto the 338LM shortly.

It was very good.

I ran it side-by-side with the new Razor (redesigned eyepiece) and both had very forgiving in terms of eyerelief position.

The glass is very good at any price, and this focus on glass is sort of silly if you ask me. Sure there are low end scopes out that clearly have poor glass, and even a few "better" scopes that have some cloudy, murky glass, especially after use. The coatings are subject to environmental effects and break down quicker than others... however this is not one of them. Having consistently used the SS-HD over time under harsher than normal conditions, they still hold up well in the glass department. The 3-9X and 10XHD both still hold up well after these years of being on the range with them. The glass mantra is old and tired.

The real meat and potatoes is, and will always be the internals. However accurate they are, and how well they hold up to repeated use. The SS-HD has shown SWFA did it right, they considered this, along with making sure the eye relief and eye box was worthy of a tactical scope and not nearly as critical as a lot of scopes out there. (the new March I have comes to mind) To me, this leads to the mechanics and the design of the scope. Whether it was done right or not.. the very best scopes, track accurate, as well have accurate clicks further out in the adjustment range, they are not subject to losing trends as the adjustments are dialed in. This is why IOR has the bad reputation here they do, great glass, terrible internals over the years that lead to multiple generations of the same scope to fix problems.

Anyone can look at a scope and give an opinion, and out of the box most look great, but how do they look 1 year from now after being used, wiped on, subject to rain, sun, wind and sand... do they maintain their quality, are the coatings holding up to use. Sure there are a few things that can be considered negative and it takes a mildly educated eye to note whether the edges suffer from distortion, or color aberrations, this can be considered important to a shooter, but really if the eye box is unforgiving the scope is but little use to a shooter who shoots in any other position by prone, or from a bench. If you only shoot in one of two ways, few notice the problem, but if you go from prone to kneeling, to sitting, back and forth, the critical nature of a poor design becomes clear. The SS-HD doesn't suffer from this...

The adjustments are solid, the glass is excellent, the design is well made and well thought out, and it's size and overall design are very traditional, not overly heavy or long like others trying to create a design that works.

Yeah, I spent much of yesterday shooting the SS (new production model) next to the 3-24 March. Yes, the March can win a pure resolution contest but the SS was much more "friendly" to use. I think the March would benefit from a 50mm objective.

The range I was at has odd lighting issues with my eyes though, I'll have to spend some time with the March in the wide open spaces before speaking too harshly of it. The point remains though that I, and I think most shooters, would have picked the SS to continue using after some time with each. They really did a heck of a job.

I don't find the March any more "unfriendly" then my F1, or the SWFA 10HD. That's not saying that the SWFA 5-20 is not better.

I should be more specific. There's nothing wrong with the March, it's just that the SS is really, really, friendly eye relief-wise. And on a gloomy day from a covered range, 20X with a 50mm objective has a leg up on 24X with a 42mm objective as far as image brightness and eye strain go, which shouldn't be a surprise. As I said, I need to get the March outside into the daylight to more fairly see what it can do.

The March I have here, same model as Jon, has a very critical eye box. The eye relief is much shorter, and you can really only be in one position in order to get edge to edge clarity.

If you shoot prone all the time that might be fine, but i don't consider a tactical scope one that is so sensitive. Eye box is important, the March is designed for one thing, its relief and eye box limits it.

Actually I found the March a little more finicky to shoot prone then my Nightforce, but thought it had more to do with the rifle config than the optic (A1-3 vs A5). My March is also non-illuminated, but that should not make a difference. Not trying to take away from the new SS at all, but using the March didn't require any more effort than my F1.

I'll have a better (more detailed) write up tonight or tomorrow, I have a 5-22 NXS on the way to me. I was able to look through a 3-15x50 and the SS 5-20x50 HD last night around dusk at the range. The 5-20 SS was noticeably brighter than the NXS at all powers.

Your right I did, I looked at both set up's tonight and found I had the March mounted to far back. Moved it forward and now (at least in my opinion) it's on par with my F1 when getting behind the rifle prone, kneeling, sitting etc. The new SS sounds like a great scope, If I wouldn't have replaced my Premier and my USO with 2 identical F1's I would have bought one of these instead.

It worked fine, all the misses were sadly all my fault!!

I put it next to the NXS 3-15 and the 5-22. Good news for everyone that ordered the SS
