What do you prefer with in 308?

And, just how many rounds do we expect a action to last? I have heard of the AI rifle with 100 000+ rounds through the action? Whould you chuck a Rem action after that many rounds?

Re: Stainless or cro-molly action?

I think that in reality the Chrome/moly action is stronger overall but for our purposes the lifetime of the action can be longer than us. If they're not overloaded or mistreated they should last a very long time. Barrels will wear out long before actions. For myself I prefer the CM as it blues nicely. I don't like the bright stainless and while its possible to blue or black it the color just isn't the same. On the other hand most of my rifles get shot with suppressors so I use stainless barrels. The suppressor can build up a pretty good store of water vapor and create corrosion issues in the barrel if you don't clean or at least swab when you're done shooting.

Choose what you like in the case of the action. I don't think you'll wear out either action.

Re: Stainless or cro-molly action?

I've read heard about galling issues if mating a SS barrel to a CM action. Any truth to that?

That question aside, I chose a stainless action to build on. Makes life easier. Less worry over rust. When I've been out shooting in the cold, I just bring the rifle in, open the bolt, and forget about it. One of my friends with a CM rifle runs for oil...

Re: Stainless or cro-molly action?

Could be.

I've only owned SS rifles and haven't had any issues. I run everything dry with a bit of grease on the backs of the lugs. Maybe it isn't that big a concern.

As for which to choose, there is money to be saved by going with CM. In my woods, the SS SPS' go for roughly two hundred more than the CM’s. An action is also easier to access and take care of than the barrel which makes rust a bit less of an issue. The extra money may be just for peace of mind..?

The saying, “buy once cry once” is used a lot on the forum. Is this relevant to this discussion? Is SS the best and worth the extra? AI’s and TRG’s are all CM and are highly respected and designed for multiple environments and hard use.

Re: Stainless or cro-molly action?

I own both and it does seem like the CM actions cycle a little smoother. I don't run mine quite dry but damn close. I use a dab of grease on the rear of the lugs and when I clean 'em up I run a light coat of CLP in the raceways through about 10 cycles then wipe 'em down to pick up the excess. That being said, all my newer ones are SS..

Re: Stainless or cro-molly action?

It really depends on the actual end use of the rifle. If you are building a hunting rifle for all weather, high country, alaska, etc., Stainless all the way. Though not totally rust resistant it sure beats CM and if cera-coated is nearly impervious to weather. In a match situation if it's correctly maintained and lubed, cleaned regularly, the CM or the stainless will both work. It would take an awful lot of shooting to say that one was actually more economical and or better than the other.
