He (the suspect) shot the responding LEO who returned fire striking the suspect. The officer will survive.

I'm still reeling. Something like this is one of the reasons that I'm pretty much always armed, and especially at the gurdwara.

One of the congregants had stated that the shooter was an outsider, and reading between the lines I've surmised that he wasn't a Sikh. One of the media accounts had quoted someone onsite as saying that the shooter was a heavyset white male in his mid-30s. Sikhs <span style="font-style: italic">have</span> been subject to hate crimes in the past, and it's never far from our minds, no matter the race of the perpetrator. Nonetheless, it's unfair that one race or another should be constantly associated with any crime by the media. Finally, generally speaking, most of the problems associated with gurdwaras are internal and arise from some serious schisms within the faith.

This reminds me of so many posts written hereabouts by proud compressed air rifle and SKS owners. Firstly, Sikhism comes from the Punjab, a region that sits astride the border between Pakistan and lower Northwestern India. Secondly, there are many religions in India; 60% of Punjabi Indians are Sikh, but nationally within India Sikhs are only about 2% of the population.

QED, Sikhs are only in the majority in the Punjab in India. Hinduism <span style="font-style: italic">is</span> the majority religion in India, and yes, there are glaring exceptions (Pakistanis, Afghanis, me) to your supposition that there are no Sikhs but Indian ones.

Check your map of the subcontinent to get an idea of where India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh sit in relation to each other. That "split" was a political boondoggle in 1947 engineered by the British, with the cooperation of Hindu and Muslim leaders (Gandhi, Jenna, etc.), that in the Punjab resulted in one of the bloodiest resettlements ever witnessed by man.

I've spent the past few hours in prayer, where I should have been. I wouldn't mind at all if any of you would send your own kneemail for the police officer who was wounded and the victims at the gurdwara.

I've always had great respect for the Sikh, its really a shame that this happened. The gunman got exactly what he deserves, this hate crime is despicable.

Their role is more in taking care of the facilities and leading the congregation in devotional practice. In a typical gurdwara they are never dressed in Western fashion, and as initiated male Sikhs (99.9% are male) they would have had full beards and turbans, for sure.

I don't believe in "hate crimes" as some subset of murder. All murder is hate. All murder is a disgusting disregard for human life for the twisted purpose of the murderer.

Instead, ordained (Roman Catholic) priests, having studied philosophy, scripture, theology, Latin, etc., and been tested for six years, the equivalent of a Ph.D. program, offer spiritual guidance and perform the sacraments that have evolved since the first Holy sacrifice of the Mass at the near-sacrifice of Isaac by his father, Abraham. They consecrate bread and wine.
Someone might have been mislead by the inaccurate characterization of priests to their spiritual detriment and so I wanted to re-direct that line of thought.
Somewhere between Nairobi and Mombasa I visited a Mosque out of curiosity and to pay respect and homage to those there. In return, I was respected and welcomed, and I did not feel judged. Somewhere in Orissa near the 13th century Konark Sun Temple I visited an Hindu Temple, again out of curiosity, to pay homage and respect. There, too, I was respected and welcomed, and I did not feel judged. Unfortunately I have yet to visit a Synagogue, but I genuinely respect other faith traditions' beliefs, whether or not their roots can be argued to be a few kilometers north or south. Conversely, while visiting some conservative evangelical protestant churches, I did feel judged and unwelcome. So, let us Christians not place ourselves on too high of a pedestal lest that be foolish.
Whether within a sacred place (Church, Temple, Mosque, Synagogue) or elsewhere, <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">no one</span></span> deserves to be abused with violence. </span>

Thanks for the info Veer, definitely tragic and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. More stupid, senseless violence brought on again by a single moron, causing pain and anguish for the victims and no doubt future ass pain for law abiding gun owners.
