As a supplement to my original post, "Can your media do this?? The ultimate challenge", I decided to see how conventional corn cob would fare against that skanked out brass. This is what 2 handfuls looked like after 12 hrs of vibratory tumbling in corn cob and some polish:

Needless to say, not too impressive. Bluntly stated, these results suck balls. Not only are the cases ugly as a turd, but they cannot be used in this condition. The surface is still rough. I won't even bother checking inside the cases, but I would estimate that there is a lot of lost case capacity due to oxidation buildup. In addition, I tumbled in corn cob for 12 hrs, vs 6 hrs with the steel media, and it still couldn't even come close.

I performed this test to see how unique the ability of steel media is. My results have further reinforced my claim that tumbling with steel media is best method out there today as a whole, in terms of cost, time, production, efficiency, results, and utility.

Ultrasonic, Corn cob, Walnut, & Ceramic will not get the results of the SS Media. Dish soap, hot water, and the SS media in the Rotary tumblers is the only method I know of will get these results.

PS. I need to devise a way to separate the carbon from the black water to sell to Al Gore.

Carbon credits down the drain! Literally!

Terry, can you point us in the direction of another group buy of the SS media?

My one concern to the OP on that brass is now that it looks so good, what rifle are you going to put it in? After a piece of metal takes that kind of oxidized abuse in who knows what kind of chemical environment are you ready to shove it through your match rifle?

Clearly the media works like gangbusters, but the cosmetics on that old abused brass is not the only consideration on using it again.

I do really like the idea of having completely clean cases to start from each time, so I'm interested.

I'll keep my corn cob tumbler for loaded ammo cleanup.

Yes, I am aware of the possible significant erosion that may happen to shit brass like that. In my first post, I said that the brass was 'salvageable', not match quality. The demo was mainly to show how effectively the steel media works. If I decide to run this brass, it will be thru a shit bush carbine, so I don't really care.

Gotcha. I agree, the cleaning capabilities of Terry's method is great, I'd like to get ahold of some of it myself.

As far as filtering the stuff out to get the carbon from it, if you're serious I'll detail how to do it. I don't feel like writing it all out if you're just joking.

Re: Steel media challenge add on

No man, Terry was totally screwing around. The carbon comes right out of the media with a little water. It actually doesn't even stick to the media.

I was once given a couple hundred rounds of 5.56 M193 ammo that had been packed away in a ammo can in a rain storm and forgotton about for a year. I asked for it for a test and they gave it to me. It looked just like Palmik cases except it was loaded in stripper clips and I had to break it out of clips.
To my surprise every last round fed, fired, extracted and ejected from SAAMI spec chamber.

Terry could probably use black water for bore cleaner as we know it is abrasive or maybe polish haha. Bet you can spot his house now with all that black crap running down his snow white driveway ! ! ! !

I have found a replacement for Ed's Red, Butches, Sweets, and all those other expensive cleaners. LOL!

There was a chemical plant in the Pittsburgh area several years back that had a chemical release some how! I believe it was copper sulfate if I remember right! However, the snow within a 2 mile radius of the plant was you guessed it <span style="color: #33FF33"><span style="font-weight: bold">"GREEN"</span></span>. Looked funny as all hell.

Just received a email from my media contact. The new price is $47(5lbs) and $81(10lbs). This is a $1 increase from before and is due to S&H increase form his supplier.

That is a $47 one time cost, as long as you don't lose the media down the drain or on the floor over time.
