I have a Remington 700 Police MLR .338 Lapua Magnum... I sent it out to LongRifles, Inc. to get several upgrades done to it. I should have it back in about a week from now and I want to upgrade to a more tactical stock. I have narrowed it down to either this HS Precision... or this McMillan A5. Ill be getting them from stockys because they have them in stock now. My only issue is with fitment. Im concerned about the magazine and trigger metal fitting and also the action as well. I really dont want to make an exoensive mistake... someone please chime in and give me some insight into this project as well as stock choices between these two choices... Thank You.

what barrel contour?
what floot metal do you want to use?

you will have to bed the mcmillan, but the HS has an aluminum bedding block

The floor metal is the standard one that came with the rifle from remington... heres a pic of it as well as the barrel.

im a little dumb qhen it comes to stocks.. I know what bedding means but with the aluminim what does rhat mean and also does it just fit perfect or do you still need to bed it?

I've the sensation that you could have the best answer about your next stock choice asking straight first to LongRifle,Inc. ,if you have reputed them reliable enough to have your .338 under their TLC_
Aluminium is the metal billet, of the same (female) shape of the (male)action shape , placed inside the mid portion of the stock, under the same action_ Exacly what I think can have now the OEM H-S stock in your 700, if don't go wrong_

HS will have an aluminum bedding block. I would try to find a stock to handle first and see what you like. I prefer the A5 over the HS. They probably booth have a complete different feel. Have you looked at the manners t4? It's almost identical to the A5.

And it fits perfect?
That's the problem : OEM 700 H-S stocks are industrially builded in huge quantity for the same huge qty. of rifles, but the keyworld is "industrially", (not hand-picked/fitted/selected/etc.)therefore some coupling between stock and action can be luckier than others, and/or the reverse_
My advise is about givin'a try to your .338 when it will return home, and IF really you're unsatisfied with it, and WHEN you'll be positively sure that the problem is coming from some stock's fault ONLY, you could think about upgrading it_ not before that, in my opinion_
meanwhile, you could know better your Rifle, talking w.some really knowledgeable people, and decide if and where spending your spared money in the best way_
good luck!

Alright well ill take that inti consideration and fifure something out. I like the mcmillan alot and will probably aggressively look for a match to have them finish it otherwise im gonna just stick with the crappy hunters stock currenrly on it for the time being. I just want to take advantage of the ability to have them do that as well now as opposed to later so I could avoid shipping charges which is about $100 roundtrip.

you can ask about it to LongRifles: I've the sensation that someone there could test the rifle and "professionally" understand&answer if some stock upgrading is really needed or not_ I don't think they would fool you with the only goal to sell you something, be a new stock or a bedding service, if not advisable on the interest of your shooting goals_

Even with the aluminum block, some will still skim bed it. The action is already where it needs to be, let him do it. I have an H & S and it is getting skim bedded at the same time everything else is getting done. It is what my smith recommended. It isn't to make money off you, it is to fix a problem before it exists or at least eliminate a variable.

The McMillan A-5 and the H-S Precision PST-026 stock both have different feels to them (I owned both). I have had both. While it is best bed the A-5 it is not an absolute requirement; I still recommend bedding it though. I did however shoot mine unbedded and achieved a sub 1/2 moa rifle. Now back to the differences in the stocks. H-S stock has a wider more rounded saddle style cheek rest with thumb wheel adjustment and length of pull adjustments with another thumb wheel. The McMillan you are looking at has a narrower more angled integral cheek rest that does not have a thumb wheel adjustment and only has a set screw, not sure how solid that is since my A-5 had the thumb wheel and 2 set screw hardware. Also the length of pull is setup using spacers. The H-S stock has a textured feel throughout the entire stock even on the saddle cheek rest. The McMillan is textured only in certain areas like the forearm and pistol grip. Other differences would be palm swell but both were solid stocks. Also, if you are using the regular BDL bottom metal both stocks fit just fine.

Thanx for the input... im proud to say that my new McMillan A5 Tactical Stock arrived today. It needs a little fitting work around the bottom metal and bolt notch but nothing major. Im more concerned with bedding the action and putting new pillars in it as it came with none and ive never done this before... Any suggestions there?
