No I got your point, happiness is very subjective. It is not something that can be easily measured in absolute terms and is done in a relative manner. My point is with a homogeneous population, the people tend to have the same values and therefore are more agreeable with their fellow man, which could make them happier (less conflict). Whether they are experiencing greater happiness in absolute terms we can never know.
I'm pretty sure they aren't being manipulated or indoctrinated to say they are happy. Nordic countries are, like you said, taxed highly and use those taxes for social programs. Healthcare, education, unemployment benefits and parental rights are provided/subsidized by the government so the anxiety of not having enough money is just not there. I am NOT defending those programs, it is THE explanation for their happiness.

There is no free travel between states, you have a Gas tax, Your auto is taxed, if its a muscle car that gets bad gas mileage its taxed more. Can't even drive on the East coast without hitting a toll road(NJ, NY prime examples). Some of those toll roads are as bumpy as a National Forest road so where does that money go?
Look at Seattle's recent tax snafu, Kshama Sawant: lets tax business per employee to house and feed the homeless. The previous $60 million we burned through didnt get it done, we can't really account for where the money went other than the city used $5 million to administer the program.
