The only blue part of VA :(
is there any point to them? (ha ha) do they actually expand at 1000fps or no?

i'm about to stock up on some subsonic 22lr for my bolt gun and am trying to decide between the aquila 40gr subsonic solid points and 38gr hollows for general target and small game hunting.

thanks!

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Ive used the 38 grainers on rabbits, hares and magpies and they seem to expand some what ok and are accurate. I havent had a problem using them on bigger animals either ie goats.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

The CCI 40 gr HP expand and hit hard. hey also make a segmented sub sonic HP that is supposed to be really good. I some some online review where some one shot some fruit and it exited in 3 pieces.

Thats my ammo of choice for 22 LR work - CCI Subsonic - You can even Watch it hit the target !!! Its hella fun

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Poor performance from Remington sub sonic. Complete pass through on live chickens with no visable expansion (bolt rifle). Some had to be shot as many as three times ( I was trying to be humane, but failed with the subsonics).

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Eley subsonic HPs are popular among assassins throughout the world.

All I know is that they take down squirrels and rabbits decisively while doing no damage to meat. No experience with the Aguilas on game. A good option is to get the solids and then get a die for filing the noses to create SGBs (small game bullets). They do a great job on small game irrespective of velocity.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Don't know about terminal performance, but in my experience they are the most accurate of any Remington .22LR ammo. (which isn't saying much). I do use them for shooting paper. While most show acceptable accuracy, there seems to be a few to ruin a group.

I shot 25 of them yesterday at a 100yd TQ4 target. I sorted by weight and rim thickness, and still had one in the 25 that dumped into the 8 ring. I am confident it wasn't the shooter, as the shots I know that I jerked or had other problems with were still comfortably in the 9.

All that said I guess the point is they have to be accurate enough to be terminal before that part can be considered.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

I'm partial to the Aguila 60gr subsonics as they hit like a hammer and are very accurate. Especially effective for getting into the brain bucket on possum, 'coon and such.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

I have shot groundhogs at 100yds and had very good results with Eley and RWS subsonics, the CCI's chamber very hard in my CZ, the driving band is a little long i think. But the RWS is my favorite with a suppressor. Very accurate and great terminal performance.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

+1 Rem SSHP and Fiocchi SSHP are the most accurate in my Savage BTV.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Another vote for CCI sub 40g HP's. Hard to find them in my area, I usually can only buy 200rd a time because that's all they have. I want to find tr segmented hp to try on critters next.

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

How to get Subsonic Vel. HP's to Smack like a they should .
I started doing my own HP modifications after doing a lot of testing 'years ago' on how to make Subsonic HP's hit harder out of a Rimfire. These things hit like a ball-peen hammer .
My modified hollow points in a wet phone book ( SubSonic Vel.)

Modified HP . next to factory HP-hole . the Mod. is perfect concentric also for best accuracy .

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

Modified points like above work well. I have the Paco Kelley pointing tools. Using CB's and not opening the nose, the Possums have a hard time realizing they have been shot. Dumb critters and pre-historic. With the opened noses...lights out right now. They don't feed well in a Ruger semiauto. In my OLD Winchester 67 (I got it for my birthday in 1947) they are almost silent. Long barrel helps.

Just get CCI Subsonics ... they come out of the box just like your "modified" rounds

Re: subsonic 22lr hollow points?

strange, the pic of the CCI subsonics i found looks like the bullet on the left. isnt the one on the right the modified one?

maybe the CCI subconic frangible rounds look different though?

so where are people buying their ammo? most subsonic that i've looked at has been out of stock.
