I have this project running around in the back of my mind since I saw the cartridge. Is anybody running a 338 federal with subsonic 300 matchkings in a 1 in 7" or 1 in 8" 16" barrel. I am thinking this would be a 300 yd deer and hog stacking machine. Nothing like stacking the critters while the other critters dont know why there buddy decided to lay down for a nap.

Re: subsonic 338

The .338 spectre is what you want. Mainly due to a smaller cartridge capacity. Less cartridge capacity means being able to use powder other than trailboss which is dirty and not as quiet as other alternatives. It easily beats the .338 whisper in this regard.

The .338 Whisper uses PowerPistol & H-110, (PP in bolt guns and H-110 in AR's) as well as many others. The Whisper series round's are also designed to be shot at supersonic speeds, the .338 with 200 & 250gr. pills gives power something like a .308 when run hot. The .300 Whisper is closer to the AK47. People tend to forget this and it's a shame. It's what makes the Whisper rounds so versital.

Re: subsonic 338

I built a 358 Winchester w/ 16 twist Pacnor barrel for subsonic work.
Just ordered Hoch nose pour mold yesterday for two designs in the 300 grain range. One will have a .160" diameter meplat and the other will have a .200" diameter meplat. Bullets will just stabilize in the Greenhill formula at 1.230 length.
Will test both bullets subsonic and sonic. Basic bullet design was by Ed Harris.
In front of the first drive band it has a bore ride .200" long to center it up early on. Will most likely shoot as cast. this gives me a bullet contact of 60% including the bore ride.

I shot it with some bullets that were not designed correctly, had no bore ride so when chambered the bullet pointed where it wanted to and flew the same way but still I was getting about a inch at 50 yards with sound equal to 22 from a short barreled rifle. It seemed to desire to be fed 2400 propellant.
