My friend is in the market for a starter tactical "ish" bolt rifle that is under $1000. I suggested to him the Savage .308 with McM stock or Remington 700. He saw a news special on the Rem 700 trigger and no longer wants to get one. Can you guys suggest some other .308 Rifles?

Tell him to go with that Savage you suggested. Inexpensive, but still a great shooter and If he decides he's not interested in continuing with the bolt gun he can always sell it easily.

I have no personal experience with the 700 but always heard great things about it. I went from the savage to fn spr a2 to a GAP and all 3 weapons were great.
Holy Crap, just checked the price of the Savage with McM stock!!! its now 1000+. i remember when i bought one 5 years ago for under 800.

Theres a ton of options he can do, the poplular choice would be going the Rem 700 route the advantage of that is parts can be found anywhere. Savage would be another good choice, not quite as popular as Rem 700 but its not to far behind. Another option he could go would be choosing a Howa I don't know much about them but haven't heard much good or bad I'm sure there a quite a few on here that know more about Howa rifles that could give you more accuate info on them but I noticed a niced packaged deal on another website is running on a Howa bolt action turnkey package for $975.00 snipercentral.com they even give you some additional build options and for a little more money you can step up to a Rem 700 build. Seems like a fairly decent deal for what it is.

So he saw a program on NBC about Remingtons and no longer wants one. While I don't own one right now, let's think about this for awhile. They've been making 700's for what, 50 years with hundreds-of-thousands on the market, both in military & civilian sectors. Now, for the first time, we're hearing about serious trigger problems? While I didn't see the program (nor do I intend to watch it), it seems a little ridiculous to me. I say find one that fits your needs and rock on. Or, if he's still concerned, buy a Timney and move on.
For the record, I've never had a problem with a Remington trigger & would not hesitate to buy another. Actually, I'll be buying another next year.

If he's just getting into shooting he would do well to listen to the opinions of people more experienced than himself (ie: most everyone). When I first became a cop they told me I wouldn't be issued my opinion for the first couple years. Hehe. I guess my point is that closing your mind to the most popular and plentiful "sniper rifle" in recent history because you watched a TV blurb on it is probably not the "teach me" type of attitude that a beginner should have.

I am in your friend's position although I already have experience with a 700 7MM RM I use as my hunting gun. It has a nice walnut stock and has already had the pillar, glass, and trigger combo from the gunsmith, it shoots respectable but the recoil and case life isn't great.
I am looking at the Savage 10FP and will put a Choate tactical custom stock on it fairly quickly. The main reason I am considering the Savage over another 700 is that I can change the barrels easily on the 10FP. I would eventually like to switch the Savage over to a .260 Rem after I have learned the ropes with the .308.

While the arguments for Remington are valid, let him buy whatever he wants. There are a lot of good entry level rifles. Savage and Howa come to mind first.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care if he buy from "Big Green" or not. My point is only that if he's asking for advice, he should take the advice he gets from more informed individuals.

HAHA agreed. If you also watch those "remakes" of misfires the people who killed someone or shot someone have terrible gun control... if every one of them was pointed at the ground there would be no problems. Unless you call brown stains in your shorts from not being ready for the gun shot...
