Re: Suggestions for barrel break in on a Savage FCP ..

This again...really?!?! How many times are we going to have to go down the barrel break-in road?

Here is an excellent video that really demonstrates the finer points of proper break-in. PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION AND FOLLOW THE PROCESS IN DETAIL:

<object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TRRahHX9Zkg"></param> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TRRahHX9Zkg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"> </embed></object>

Seriously...try running a search on barrel break-in. A link to the Hide Google search is listing in my sig line below. Barrel break-in and the multitude of differing opinions thereon has been beaten to death, resurrected from the dead and beaten to death again on countless occasions over the years. There is no right or wrong answer...just varying opinions on the subject. Do it...don't do it...how to do it if you do...SIGH!

I realize that there is no one way of doing it, I just respect the opinions here, and wanted to get some takes on it.

Then I defer to my comment on running a search and reading said opinions of which there are countless posts...some very recent...some remote...all the same stuff that has been hashed out on many occasions before now. No need to reinvent the wheel with yet another barrel break-in thread.

Re: Suggestions for barrel break in on a Savage FCP ..

I'm sure most everything has been asked by now so why not just put a big search button on one side of the home page and the shout box on the other and call it a day for this forum?

Barrel break in is hogwash. Just go shoot it. Boresnake it after each range session and keep it reasonably clean. You'll have to send 2,500-3000 rounds downrange before you see throat erosion and if you can afford to send that many rounds of 338 downrange, you can afford a new barrel and simple tools to replace it yourself since it's a Savage.

I'd worry less about break in and start shopping for sales on reloading components.

I'm so glad I let that run until the end. "This one's gotta bull barrel on it. Most rifles come with a cow barrel, but you're gonna want the bull barrel" ROFL!

Layton,

I'm not suggesting that we shut down the forum, archive everything and defer to said archives via searches for all future reference...but what I am saying is that barrel break-in, like the "this vs. that" and "which is the best widget for x" threads and other such topics that get brought up with ridiculous regularity and ALWAYS to the same incredibly "fruitful" ends could be easily handled by a simple search. By way of example, just by searching for barrel break in, you get 25k+ results of which there has been ZERO new information on the subject for years...decades even.

It is what it is and nothing more (or less). I just don't see why the hell we must continue to waste time, bandwidth, etc., etc., etc. on the same tired old topic over and over...again and again. But...given the seeming reluctance of folks to do their due diligence before posting, to run searches, to read (especially the FAQs), I suppose we should all just continue to recite the same tired old crap time and again for the masses to absorb.

Anyway...I digress. To the OP...the point being...do it or don't. It genuinely doesn't matter when all is said and done. If you do proceed with barrel break in, regardless of which method/madness you follow, use proper cleaning equipment (like a bore guide, quality 1pc rod, proper cleaning chemicals/solutions, etc.) and be careful in doing so. More barrels have been ruined by poor cleaning (and break in) techniques than I care to imagine. Good luck and God speed!

When I searched, I got a whole lot of stuff, very little of which had to do with barrel break in.

Re: Suggestions for barrel break in on a Savage FCP ..

IMHO there are a couple concerns here I would definately treat a factory gun different on break in than I would a custom barrel. But thats just me. Shoot have fun and keep clean is the best method as always.

You mean like this 5 page sticky titled "Objective Research on barrel break-in" in the gunsmithing section?

Re: Suggestions for barrel break in on a Savage FCP ..

go to the range, zero your scope, then fire 80 more rounds, go home and clean it good. You now have a clean zeroed broke in barrel.
cheers.

Re: Suggestions for barrel break in on a Savage FCP ..

This is the link to Howa's barrel break in procedure. It follows the recommendations from some of the custom barrel makers. I have used this procedure for the past 5 years, and find that I don't have near as much copper fouling problems as I used to, and the barrels clean up pretty fast. I have also purchased used rifles that copper fouled really bad with factory barrels, and were hard to clean.
