I’ll be the first to say I’ve gone through a lot of hobbies, but always come back to shooting.
I don’t agree with you that you have to be an excellent marksman to hunt. I’ve seen some dumb bastards blow animals up before they actually kill them.
I will agree that there’s a huge run on long range shooting and a lot will get back to building their rice burners or hotrods, but oh well. There’s so much more good that comes from it. New cartridges, tools, scopes, and competition. There may be a lot of guys that continue the sport and pass it on to their kids.
There’s a lot of guys I know that didn’t grow up with guns like me. They have gotten into it and will pass it down. Continuing the growth and support of the 2A!! That’s a great thing!

Here is a dose of reality for you... technology changes, guns are cheaper and more plentiful than ever. There have ALWAYS been long range shooters and disciplines. The cost of entry was just higher. Better tech = cheaper and better products. There were still legions of bubbas shooting long range with their Rem 700 PSS/R5 & Savages topped with super snipers 10-20 years ago.
There was much less gun company competition 20 years ago. They used to dictate what products were made with little user input. Fucktards like Jim Zumbo and other cocksucking fudds were who they listened to. Hell Remington had the winner in their pocket (.260REM ) and did absolutely nothing with it. We could have had factory .260's in something other than a model 7 twenty years ago if they weren't so fucking dumb. Today there are 10 fold the number of companies all competing using latest CAD/CNC tech , which forces them to make what people want. Its not rocket surgery.

Hunting advances only occur when someone is in an area where advances can occur.
I have hunted with a shotgun for deer I have hunted over corn from a blind and I killed a buck at 844 yards this year with my shorter range backup gun.
If you live in a state where you can hunt long-range and it's something you want to try buy the gear get proficient and see how you do.
If long-range is 400 yards max that is fine as well.
I got into 1000 yard Benchrest matches when I kept seeing a huge buck that was always out of range. The 25-35 never gets used anymore.

Long range shooting began as the long shot “who can hit that rock way out there” while hunting. Family has a long tradition with rifles and reloading so it was always there. As I’ve gotten older the shooting has become more exciting and the hunting is fun as well but less important. Personally this “fad” only becomes more and more intense the more I am able to do - which isn’t nearly enough. Hunting, shooting, competing, who cares what got us to this point we are all reaping the benefits of better technology, equipment, and knowledge. At the end of the day whatever I can do to pass this on to the next generation is a motivator as well. As much as I dislike social media, it may be one of the biggest factors in sharing ideas/info and supporting the 2A.

20 years ago the best you could do for a factory rifle was a 700p and 175 gold medal with a mark 4 on top. What’s out there now specifically due to the popularity of these rifle competitions?
Demand drives innovation. It’s been really cool to watch it happen. First it was the 7mms, then the 260/6.5 for a long time. Talking broad appeal here. Now the 6mm has morphed into a scene dominated by the BR genus.
I have kinda followed it full circle, by now building a 308 specifically for the 178 tmk or 168 Berger hybrids. For those retro feels and actual measurable throat life...

Look at the sights on a Springfield 03 and the thought/ballistics that went into building it.
There are like 5 different sighting possibilities and potential range markings out to 2700 yards if I remember correctly. Spin drift is even accounted for.
Being frugal back than I dont think they ever considered being limited by "effective range" everything was thought out and calculated to "max range".
Now we enjoy advances in technology but we can be lazy in not actually knowing theory. With less technology they really had to know theory.
More like, they had no concept of what the modern battle field would be like and designed a sight that would win medals on a square range, but sucked in the trenches of WWI. And, those 2700y “volley sights” were not for putting combat effective hits on man sized targets, but for large units to lob rounds en mass.
Now, the sights on the garand- on the other hand- are a masterpiece...
I call Bullshit on the first part of your screed..I worked selling guns in one of the largest retail gun/hunting stores in 2001 in Iowa (Iowa, where you can't hunt deer with a rifle). Besides the old standby long range rifles chambered in 264WM, 7mm RM, 338WM and 300WM all over the store - we had the "new" at the time line of Remington Ultra Mags and Winchester Short Mags. Your "very few long range hunting rifles" accounted for approx half of our rifle inventory.
Yep they were too persnickerty in their design but I like the effort in trying to provide what they thought was the best while failing to fore see the coming realities.
They missed the impact of the machine gun and rapid firing artillery making the battlefield deadly as never before.
If M1905 sights had been available at Picketts Charge the gray would never have made it past the Emmitsburg Road. Armistead would have died somewhere well in front of the Union lines instead of in them.
I think tactically they still had the CW in mind when they were designing the 03, the Indian Wars and the Spanish American wars not being significant enough other than to lead them to adopt the Mauser rifle design and smokeless powder.
I disagree with the idea that long range shooting is a fad, people have been long range target shooting since the 1800’s. The Creedmoor name comes from a 1000 yard rifle range nearly a century and a half before Hornady’s attached it to their new target cartridge in 2007. The only difference between them and now is that it has become far more affordable and accessible to a wider variety of people compared to back in the day.
I will also contest that shooters and hunters are more mutually exclusive than not. Most of the hunters I know pick up a gun right before hunting season and that is the only time they shoot and they typically aren’t very good at it. Case in point over the past couple years my cousin has used 12 shots to kill 3 deer, inversely I shoot a lot and in that same time period I have killed 7 deer with 8 shots (the miss was at 30 because I clipped a branch at 20).
I will also contest that shooters and hunters are more mutually exclusive than not. Went to camp perrry to watch my grandfather shoot in the 70's shot there in 83. Still see some of the shooters from that time today. You may know the names if not do some research. Long range shooting has been around since before this country was a country. In fact if you look at this style of competition most talked about here you would see it's origins in the forming of this country. Ethan Allen's Green mt boys were sharpshooters and sneaky f'ers. There were plenty of others as well from different parts of the country.
To the op if it was hunting that is carrying the long range aspects of shooting, how come it has taken so long for even simple advancements in tech. Yet in target shooting games we see new answers to shooting solutions weekly. Tripods hog saddles pic rails barricade stops etc etc. Not to mention how many top of the heap rifles you can purchase. I can remember when a sub 1/2moa hunting rifle was quite interesting. Today I can order one in the caliber I want with a guarantee it does it from no less than 20 places.

Amen! Today I shot a coon and a possum with my 22lr pistol and supressor. Get out in the woods, been trapping with a friend this winter and never had so much fun. One thing I've noticed about being on the internet, the more I am on it the less I like it. FB and all the gun pages are annoying as shit, SH is still the best. There's a lot of experts on FB but when I go to Spearpoint or KO2M it's about the same group of 30-50 people. Where are all the experts?
