Suppressors Suppressor use and Barrel Life

Running a Sig 7.62 Titanium on a 6XC. Shooting 105 Hybrid over 34.5 grains 8208XBR Lapua Palma brass formed and turned for the XC. Last Barrel was a Bartlein 5r 8 twist and managed 1200 rounds before accuracy fell off. Second barrel X-caliber 8 twist both of the barrels were cut at 20 inches and turned to a modified Tubb contour. Checked the X-Caliber barrel today and there is cracking in the throat as well as down the barrel about 3 inches. I understand 6MM cartridges are hard on barrels with speed and pressure. The first barrel was definitely a victim of speed. I have been running about 2980fps with the X-caliber with no pressure signs. It appears the X-Caliber barrel will be done by the 1200 round mark as well.

So here is the question: Is there any reason to attribute the short life to shooting suppressed?

You should be getting a hell of a lot more rounds out of those barrels than 1200 especially shooting the 105's that slow.

Doubt it has anything to do with the suppressor. 1200 rounds on a 6mm is pretty common. You may get a bit more or less depending on about 100 variables.

I doubt the suppressor had a negative effect as well, however I'm not too experienced.( two barrels don't make a expert) My post was in hopes of eliciting response from those with considerable experience using suppressors. Thanks for your replies

I don't see how the can could have burned out the barrel at the throat. Worst case the muzzle grooves would be full of carbon.

Frank Green, from bartlein, has posted on the hide before that suppressor use drops barrel life by a bit...i cant remember the actual number he gave, for certain, but i want to say it was around 20%...basically it had to do with the can holding in heat/pressure IIRC...could probably call bartlein and ask him about it

The 20% would work out be about what I had expected for life of the barrel. I was looking of around 2000 rounds from this cartridge 20% being 400 rounds reduced should be close to actual experience. I will give them a call.

I got 3400 rounds on a 6.5x47 barrel that has been suppressed since day 1. Still no velocity or accuracy loss, but it is starting to crackle in first 2 inches. 2800fps is a mild normal load. I don't think the suppressor has hurt it at all.

Also depends on when you got the barrel blanks, etc. A bunch of us burned barrels out in short order last year. The rumor was that a bad batch of steel went out, and it affected all the barrel makers. I ditched my 6.5 Creed running pretty mild loads at about 1200 rounds because it started to drop velocity pretty quick.

Yes they do. On a gas gun it can shorten barrel life as much as 50%. It does shorten bolt gun barrel life but we don’t have hard numbers on that. What happens is the suppressor is keeping more of the fouling inside the bore of the barrel and with this happening it shortens the barrel life. On the gas guns it also accelerates the wear of the gas port. Which will also lead to bullet failure and damage to the suppressor.

Thanks for all the info and help! Not going quit using Suppressors for sure! Curious if 8208 XBR could be the culprit or X-Caliber barrels?? This particular barrel had pressure issues from the beginning and used about 1.5 grains less powder charge.
