Suppressors Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

I also tried a suppressed Sten, but with 9mm supersonic ammo. It hurt my ears even though the integral suppressor was quite long. I think it would have sounded much better with 147 grain subsonic. Sorry no info on the Uzi.

Yes, subsonic ammo is the key to quiet.

With the supersonic ammo you are getting, well, supersonic velocities which means a breaking of the sound barrier. AN integral Sten/Sterling is very pleasing (quiet) to the ear with subsonic ammo.

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

A few years ago I helped a local SO with an Uzi project. They had ten full-auto Uzis they wanted to utilize but really wanted them suppressed. So, I sold them ten AAC Striker II suppressors and had Mark McWillis from TROS USA cut, thread and install his awesome three-lug mounts on all ten barrel assemblies. With the three-lugs in place the barrel nut was captive on the barrel but Uzi barrels/nuts aren't exactly expensive and having the nut captive isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The result was excellent! The guns were quiet and functioning & reliability were 100%.

I vote to go for it!

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

Absolutely, I have an old SCRC UZI can, an exact copy of the AWC MK9, it is big, but sounds great; I also have a Gemtech Mossad, much smaller and ALMOST as quiet, but the SCRC has the edge. Overall, I think the Mossad is the better package as it's a lost smaller and marginally more quiet. As with any 9mm, though, ya gotta run subsonic through it.

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

I've spent a little time behind an open bolt STEN in 9mm. It was noisy from the action cycling but still fun to shoot. It tended to blow a ton of crap back in your face from both the open bolt design and the suppressor. Taking the can off and shooting unsuppressed cut the debris down some but it was still annoying.

Not a chance on that!

The SCRC really has a nice sound to it.

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

My MAC10/45 with Gemtech Viper always leaves everybody with a huge grin. I compare it to the sound of a pneumatic impact wrench when it's in the final torque stage (local tire store)...except quieter.

Not exactly. Bolt velocity has a lot to do with how much ejection port noise there is, and of course BBL length is a big factor too.

Uzi with 147s has very slow BV, and suppresses very well.

STLTAC, have you talked to Tim to see if he is still making the MK25 and/or MK25A? I haven't talked to Tim in years, probably 10 years or so, but at that time I'm sure he was still making the MK25.

My UZI can is actually a MK25A set up for a Mini-UZI. I use it on my Mini, but also had a std. UZI barrel cut down so it is the same length as the Mini barrel past the barrel nut so I can use it on both my Mini and my standard UZI.

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

My grandfather is selling his and I was able to shoot it recently. Even with regular Winchester 147gr FMJ most of the noise you'll hear is from the action cycling. Subsonic rounds sound like someone cycling and dry firing in rapid succession. Very fun.

This is about the same noise level, and real quiet with subsonic. M-11

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

Awesome!
I really appreciate the input guys! I have decided to go forward with my 300 whisper build. But that should be complete in a few weeks. Then it seems that I must go forward with a supressed Uzi build.

Thankyou for taking the time to share your experiences.

Re: Supressor on an Open Bolt UZI

I have shot three different Uzi's quite a bit all with suppressors indoors and out, indoors the bullet hitting the trap is LOUD and requires ear pro but outdoors they are very pleasant to shoot. If you are going to get the Uzi defiantly put a can on it.
