Rifle Scopes SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I am going to mount the 1-6 on my Ruger GSR left hand, figured it would be good for woods and out to a little bit for deer season this year in Missouri. Looks like the T/C Encore 257 Roberts AI carbine is getting the knod again instead. =(

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

My new Savage 10 FLCP-K is patiently waiting for it's "eye's" to arrive before I can pull it's trigger on a live round, as well.

All other components are now in place for this rifle. (Thanks, DK...the RatMag is here! Still needs function tested but it's here.) Seems odd to have a gun in the safe that I can't or haven't shot yet.

Guess I'll take this time to add the order as another poster above has done.

I may be in some sort of minority waiting on a warranty 5-20 illuminated. I'm also waiting on a 1-6. However, it was my understanding the 5-20 illum. would be available at the same time as the 5-20 non-illuminated from the GB, or perhaps even a bit earlier. Either way it's pretty clear the regular group buy folks did not get scopes last month nor "next" month (now this month - September).

It appears even when SWFA provides a qualified date ("should be") after a terrible wait, it still isn't accurate. As has been your "policy" thus far, pleading complete ignorance as to any date whatsoever may have also been the best ongoing policy.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I just past month 6 on my RMA. Recently got an email response stating end of the year now. ::shrug::

Btw I'm waiting on the 5-20 illum.

Also on the group buy for the combo.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I added the scope covers to my order recently. But, this will probably be my first and last SWFA order. I am underwhelmed with them to say the least. Even with the reticle issue, I find it hard to believe they aren't being given or demanding some kind of time frame for manufacture/delivery for the new reticles.

^ seems they went ahead with things on a wing and a prayer. One not so good thing, at least, goes wrong in Japan and recovery is fleeting. I hope when they ship to us they are good, minimal issues. I don't want to have to send mine back for poor workmanship or any defect whatever, nobody wants that. Who knows maybe they got a shipment in and rejected them already.. We'd never know. Anyway just get it right before shipping to me please!

If the scopes show up excellent no issues, the wait will have sucked but done. Now if they show up and we're guniea pigs with a higher failure rate- this will really suck!

Is anyone having eyebox issues with this scope?

This past weekend, I got some time to put behind my scope at the range. I previously sighted it in, but this was the first time I actually got to spend all day behind it.

At 20x, I found the eyebox incredibly tight and difficult to get a clear picture through even with moving the scope around, changing the cheek riser height, etc. This was on a bench. Prone was next to impossible and the problem seemed to correct itself around 16x-18x.

Aside from this, it performed as expected.

It also seemed to be more of an issue in lower light conditions, as well.

Just looking for some other opinions/suggestions for the next time I'm out at the range.

My 5-20 is definitely pickier about eye position that the closest equivalent scope I have, a Bushnell Tactical 6-24x56. It is also pickier most of my other scopes and almost as picky as my Nightforce BR 12-42s. Like you, I also have to dick around with the cheek riser and fore-aft positioning more so than with other scopes.

I think the outcome of activities on November 6th will determine the end of the world, as we know it.

Off topic but here is the Mayan story:

The Mayan Calendar does not predict the end of the world in 2012

First of all, the Mayans don’t have a calender they have calendars which often interlocked. The calender that has given rise to the myth of the end of the world is the Mayan long count calendar. According to Mayan Mythology, we are living in the fourth world or “creation” so to speak. The last creation ended on 12.19.19.17.19 of the long count calendar. That sequence will occur again on December 20, 2012. According to the Mayans this is a time of great celebration for having reached the end of a creation cycle. It does not mean the end of the world but the beginning of a new “age”. Does the world end every December 31st? No – we go on to a new year. This is the same as the Mayan creation periods. In fact, the Mayans make many references to dates that fall beyond 2012. The idea of 2012 being the end of the world was actually first suggested by New Age religionist José Argüelles in his 1987 book The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology.

That's just normal for these scopes. I had one of the first ones last year and a buddy of mine still has his. Same thing. If you ever get used to top European glass it will drive you nuts getting back behind this scope again. BTW, where in Michigan are you located?

That's actually really disheartening. :-(

I was expecting better eyebox tolerance given the price of these. Is that just due to complications of it being FFP? This is my first FFP glass, and none of my other glass has this issue, which is why I ask. I really hope the 1-6 doesn't have that issue. :-(

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

Hmmmm... First real negative I have heard about on the 5-20. A bit surprised and disappointed that this never came out during any prior reviews. I don't think I simply missed it or chose not to pay attention to it.

I'm guessing that still in this rough price range and magnification as the SS 5-20 HD there is nothing that can match it overall? Specifically, can someone name a higher "bang for the buck" scope without the poor eye box performance?

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I love the eyebox on my 5-20.

Don't worry yourself over one guys problem with his cheek weld.

5-20 is worth the $.

That being said. I need my 1-6x

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I actually think the eyebox on the 5-20 is quite forgiving.

I don't think there is a better bang for your buck scope in this price range.

Hence why I still wait... despite 6 months in RMA. ;/

I am shooting an FN PBR, badger rings/base, Karsten cheek riser, and was shooting from multiple positions with about 6 hours of shooting through the afternoon and into the fading light of dusk. Its not the greatest rifle setup, but it works well for me, and its fun to shoot. I wasn't doing anything crazy, just shooting from multiple positions at different distances testing out the various fields of magnification.

I wear glasses, and tried with both glasses and contacts to see if maybe that was the issue - didn't help.

It didn't matter where I had the scope set, or where I had my cheek, I couldn't really defeat the tight eyebox issue at 20x. I had it to where I could get a clear picture shooting from a bench rest, but then I had major difficulty with eyebox issues while prone. I could fiddle with my weld and get a sight picture, but it wasn't comfortable or quick.

I also had someone else behind the glass take some shots from a couple of positions. He complained of the same issue, so it isn't just me.

I'm not trying to slam the scope - I'm asking if anyone else has run into similar issues, and if you did, how did you work past it?

I tend to agree with HKdave on the eyebox. I don't have any big issues with the eyebox on mine. I've offered to meet catalyst at a local range to see if there are any differences between our scopes. I've seen differences between my 5-20 & another member's scope but to be fair i never adjusted the other scope's diopter to my eyes.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I may take you up on that offer, but I'm not in a position to meet up until my schedule or my wife's schedule change up a bit. As it was, I had to interrupt our vacation to go shooting for a day.

It'd be great to get some more feedback from some other owners - positive or negative.

It might just be my eyes - who knows.

I set my diopter against a white wall and the reticle is crystal clear and so is the image down scope. Everything comes into view quickly, and it feels like its set correctly. The only issue I have is at 19-20x mag and then it becomes a significant issue. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I wonder if the FFP has anything to do with the issue at 19-20x.

Anyhow, just got a call today, my RMA is being sent out today.

Pat called me directly and has always been responsive to my emails about the RMA. She is a lovely lady.

No eye box issues here. I purchased one and spent a lot of time behind it. I liked it so much I purchased a second in the FB 5-20/1-6 deal. That 5-20 scope has also been great. My only dislike is the super-chicken logo, but I can live with that.

I look forward to receiving my 1-6, and don't mind waiting for it to be done right.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I have no issues with my ocular lens here. I have actually shot my first pig this year with my 5-20. I'm just waiting for my 1-6. No worries on my side. I just want a working scope that one that I will have to return because of a defect because it was made in a hurry.

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

I believe it IS good news. Just got off the phone with Skylar. I called to add the 50mm sunshade to my order. He said he'll see if customer service can snag one & include it with the SHIPMENT OF MY 5-20X50 SS HD TODAY!!

So the 5-20's apparently are IN and SHIPPING, guys!

Re: SWFA-SS Tax Day Group Buy: 1-6, 5-20, and more!

No eyebox issues here, when using the scope at 20x you have to fit the length of pull to either prone or benchrest, length of pull will be different between benchrest shooting and prone as will cheekweld.

The eyebox might be narrow at full power but if you have an adjustable stock so that you are consistently the same distance from your scope it should be fine.

Be sure when you mount your scope you do so at full power and set it up with the correct length of pull for what position you shoot in most, if you want to be able to do both you'll need a stock with some adjustments.

This is what I've found to work. Set your rifle up to work perfectly in the prone position at full power as all of your long ranges shots will likely be taken from prone.

Then for benchrest shooting which will likely be shorter distances, don't use full power, use 10x or so.

It is great news. I'm not in on a 5-20 rma or new purchase. But I feel relief for you guys that are. I'm here for 1-6, where's my 1-6? If no 1-6 I want a new SWFA update, last one felt good but that faded. I've been trying hard to support but I want something.
At this point a lie will work if it makes me feel better, it works in politics LoL!!
