Gunsmithing Switch barrel rifles

Re: Switch barrel rifles

Absolutely NO negatives to doing a switchbarrel rig if you understand the variables and build to control them. Talking OAL of chamber, action choice, handloading expertise.

Have done home switchbarreling with Rem 700, Win 70 and Sako TRG rifles. With a detailed log book and boresighting collimator you have all you need for repeatability. Action without recoil lug would be easy to swap even in the field. No reason you need to haul a barrel vise and 100psi torque wrench around when a strap wrench will serve to torque barrel to receiver; when both are squarely mated and lapped-in for precision. Takes hand fitting to do it right and precisely, index lines for lineup etc...

Thanks for the info

Re: Switch barrel rifles

PROS: buy one trigger, one stock, one scope and get a rifle in many calibers

CONs: need an action wrench, barrel vise, anti-sieze compound, and a torque wrench. You also need to have the recoil lug pinned. Switching barrels often may put extra wear and tear on your stock bedding.

Love my switch-barrel.

Re: Switch barrel rifles

look at this guy ... http://www.lprgunsmith.com/index.htm ... from the site

"Larry has used this system over the past few years to win a number of matches. In one 600 yard three by twenty prone match Larry used three different barrel chamber in three different cartridges on the same Savage rifle. Larry changed the barrels on the line."

Re: Switch barrel rifles

I would love to build a SB one action one scope/stock in 338 LM/ 408 cheytac. I have called one fairly well known custom action builder they don't do them. Any suggestions? I've seen a post before regarding this but can't seem to find it now. Thanks.

Re: Switch barrel rifles

My Mauser is a switch barrel, I've got it set up with 308, 7mm-08, 6mm Rem, and 22-250. Honestly don't switch it much, but options are everything!

Jim wants to try milling off thread sections and making a 1/3 turn take down. But theres more research to be done and too many projects still to be done.

Re: Switch barrel rifles

if you want to do a swith barrel in chey tac and lapua call lawton and get a single shot 8500 with 2 bolts the recoil lugs are pinned and you just need a barrel vice and action spanner. i dont tourque barrels i just nip them up with a sinclair action spanner with a 1' long handle that is all that is required i have won 5 long range state championships with a lawton action and a 308 bolt and mag bolt at 1000, 1100 and 1200 yards one stock, one trihher and one scope. if they are good quality barrels and chambered correctly the zero on both barrels will be close at 300 yards. i have 5 barrels from 6mm dasher to 7mm Rem SAUM and every one is within one MOA windage and elevation so they work Quite well and i change a barrel in 3 min using my tow bar to hold the barrel vice.
