T1x upgrade options

After searching and scanning thru the T1x thread(s) I decided to get lazy and just ask.... what are the avaialble trigger and bolt handle upgrade options for the Tikka T1x?

Other upgrades are of interest also.

Plan is to drop the bbld action into a KRG chassis, and upgrade as necesssary.

The T1x will drop right in quite a few T3 chassis. It will drop in others with a minimal modification. Other than the bolt handles already mentioned DIP carries one that fits as well. Also for the trigger I would try out the factory trigger before you buy anything. I have my factory trigger set to. 1 1/2 lbs and it is a fantastic trigger. Really the only reason I could see it change it is if you want a two stage trigger.

After $180 on my Timney, I don't know what the other $200ish on a Bix n Andy would get me. I am really digging the 2-stage Timney.

If I wanted just single stage, the stock Tikka is perfectly fine. Yes if you want to adjust the placement, fore/aft of the trigger, then yes other more adjustable triggers would be better, but if you're talking about np creep, no over travel, crisp break, the stock Tikkas are fantastic.

I would have sworn they specifically stated Timney in this statement located in the Bravo details when I read it a few days ago:
Trigger Guard/Mag catch:

• Molded light weight trigger guard
• T3 versions will accept KRG Midas 2-Stage trigger, Barnard trigger for T3 as well as factory trigger.
• Rem 700 version will accept the new X-mark triggers and nearly all aftermarket triggers but some aftermarket triggers may require modifications to the trigger or chassis. (Tubb 2 stage trigger will not work nor will trigger hanger type setups)

I say that because the Timney on my Vudoo/Bravo has no clearance/fitment issues.

Their Midas trigger looks interesting but the use of polymer components is concerning. They are also very vague about the pull weight range:
-Overall possible adjustment range of about 2lb-5+lbs though we do not support any setting lower than 2.5lbs in order to be compliant with SAAMI drop safe specs.

-As necessary, clean the trigger using compressed air. A mild solvent may be needed. However, avoid strong solvents as there are polymer parts in the trigger which a strong solvent could damage.

I'm guessing the vagueness is legal protection, though Timney is pretty open about taking their triggers down to 8ozs.

PS - I originally was thinking of going Sako Green and interchanging the cheek piece cover and butt-hook cover with my black Bravo, but that FDE keeps capturing my eye. Good looking rifles!

Here is your T1x upgrade options.

First off, Sterk handle, if you ain't got a sterk....well hell, you just ain't got a Sterk. LOL ?

Next you got to slip it in a KRG Bravo and doll it up with a spigot mount to get a nice extension on the fabulous Atlas Bipod. Made in Merica baby.

Long necks, short necks, broad shouldered, bent shouldered or whatever else makes you look like the hunchback of ND you can be fitted with the adjustable butt pad. Just another KRG specialty product that just feels right.

Don't play around with GLASS on a 1st CLASS rifle. Wrap that baby in some Burris Sigibaby rings under a (take your pick) 20 moa rail and you got yourself a 60 moa possibility situation here. Can you dig it!!

Do you carry your ammo in your shirt pocket? Hell not we ain't no Barney Fife. You got to make a custom mag holder.

You got the room baby, why not add a spot for some daylight at night.

Please tell me more about the prefit barrel. Does the manufacturer sell into the US, how accurate is the barrel, how easy is it to install, what contours are available?

Being able to put a high quality aftermarket barrel onto this gun would make it darn near perfect.

Each square is 1"? That's an amazing 10 shot group. I need to try out a box of center-x... People claim sub-moa @ 100 yards with things like Eley Target, but I can only get sub-moa when using Eley Tenex, and that's just way too pricey to be constantly burning rounds on. Yesterday I was shooting Eley Target and getting random flyers... like 3-4 shots grouping, 1 shot randomly low or randomly right. Very odd. I thought man maybe something is wrong with my rifle / scope. So I put in 15 rounds of Eley Tenex just to see, and 3 5 shot groups all < 1".

Also on a cold bore with my Tikka, I usually get a .2mil up shift POI. (.75 inches high @ 100 yards).

I'll see if I can bum a box of center-x off someone at the NRL22 match tomorrow to see.

I'm curious how swapping to a Lilja barrel, or any other match barrel will turn out. Another $300-500ish investment in a barrel. This also puts the Tikka @ ~$900ish. I guess still a $9000 cheaper than a Vudoo.

I did like 14 more 6x5's with Eley Target the last 2 days. I did 10 shot group and it wasn't pretty. At 100 yards, my 10shot group is usually like 2". It usually looks like 7 shots within 1", and then 1-2 shots .5inch low, and 1-2 shots .5inch high.

With 5 shot groups, I averaged 0.9" to 1.5" with the average of my 5x5 or 6x5 around 1.2". I'm curious what room for improvement there is - how much would I expect to improve upgrading to a Lilja / Proof Research barrel.

I'm really curious what the day to day Vudoo V22 w/ a variety of ammo puts out in 6x5's. Right now in my Tikka, I can't really get sub moa with CCI SV, SK+, SK LRM, SK RM, Eley Target, Lapua Pistol King, etc. The only ammo I can get sub moa is Eley Match & Tenex. I've seen posts of people say, well my X & Y rifle shot CCI SV as good as my other rifle shot Tenex, so I'm curious what I can upgrade to get that kind of precision for a 10c/round..

Talk is cheap. It's the internet. Take EVERYTHING with a block of salt. Mine shoots CCI SV great 75% time. People like to 'forget' about flyers and such.

It's more about manufacturing consistency. You can do everything right and if there's a ½ grain less powder or the bullet was seated 1/100" closer, how hot the primer fires, etc. It will drive you insane if you let it.

The .22 is notorious for revealing all your short comings too. Keep shooting it, you'll get much better. Then the center fires will seem easy. ?

I've been working with Wiebad on their mini stock pad. It uses velcro straps that go underneath and are perfectly spaced for KRG's cheek piece.

I don't know if they have the latest updated version made yet, I'll contact them to see if they do. Their initial version wasn't as nicely cut as the last prototype I have.

From a marksmanship point of view, why is the .22 so notorious for short comings? Is it because the rate it leaves the rifle, your input into the action can cause all sorts of influence? So things like NPOA make a lot more of a difference? I have to focus so hard to get a sub moa group with my .22 @ 100, but on my centerfire I have no problem doing that repeatably.

I wish I had a 50 yard area to shoot. We're trying to figure out how to build a safe 50 yard berm at my range. Only 25,100,200.

international barrels is a canadian based company, permits are in the process of being approved to bring them into the US
the barrel is pretty darn accurate, SK rifle match holds .4" 10rd groups at 50yards and sub moa 5 shot groups at 100 yards (ill have to dig up some pics)
install was very easy.
1. heated up the factory barrel/tenon
2. removed old barrel.
3. installed new barrel with feeler gauges @ .042" headspace
4. tighten barrel set screws
5. shoot
not sure on the contours available, but this one is .900" all the way down and 22" long

DIP bolt handle - I like it over the factory bolt, better leverage even without the added curve of a Sterk
Area 419 30 rail - bought a 15 MOA rail first
Trigger spring - lowered trigger pull but may end up with an after market trigger later
Pic rail for bipod - mine has a flush cup built in
Flush cup on the rear - for sling mandatory stages
ODG Pistol grip - helps with trigger control over the regular factory stock
ODG Beaver tail fore end - feels better in the hand and adds material for the pic rail


(And) Then I bought an XLR Element chassis to match my 308.


Anybody want a decked Tikka stock and a 15 MOA rail for cheap?

Your decked out stock sounds like the one I'm adding to. Orange pistol grip on its way, DIP bolt handle and muzzle brake back ordered, DIP rail on board, added flush cups on rear stock and fore end. For now - I've decided to stick to stock - stock. Maybe later I'll make that jump.

After adding a thicker recoil pad, length of pull was pretty good, then after adding a Vickers cheek rest, the stock was a pretty close fit for my body. The problem is that the stock is overall just too bendy - and maybe I'm still a bit ham-fisted with it too.

My Tikka was purpose built as a trainer for one of my other guns. I had a choice between a McMillan and an XLR as that is what I have on two other Remington 700 SA pattern rifles. For now, I'm shooting more .308 than 6.5x47 Lapua - so I built the Tikka similar to my .308/XLR.

Just as easily I could have built the Tikka as a trainer for my 6.5/McMillan - and I still may build another trainer, but if I do again it'll be a Vudoo in a McMillan, but I'll need to save up some more before I visit Mile High Shooting Accessories. Until then I'll work on finding another McMillan stock and a scope for the build.

IMHO, for the price - features - fit - adjustability - etc., the XLR is truly a great deal - and while there are other chassis systems out there, I already owned one so I knew what I was getting into with buying my second XLR Element.

Just sayin', but I really do like the Tikka! Just not a fan of the stock. Mine is pretty accurate. I've only had ~2 FTF issues and once I ran a boresnake down the barrel and across the feedramp, it again shot great (I've now gotten into the habit of running a boresnake at the end of each range session) - just recheck the cold bore shot the next time at the range and I'm good to go.

After adding the XLR, the Tikka trainer will be done. In the mean time, I'm still shooting it. A bunch.

Matt at XLR emailed me last week. Bottom metal was in anodizing. Should ship out from Grand Junction today or tomorrow, should have the Element here in Evergreen by Tue/Wed of next week - just in time to mount it up and hit the range before a match on the 15th. I'll post Tikka/XLR pics here after the action is installed in the new chassis - hopefully with some punched paper targets too.

I agree the Tikka stock isn't much. And fixing it up is a bit like putting lipstick on a pig...but here I am.

Agreed. Checked in with Matt when I was adding the folder option to the order last week. That was when he told me about the chassis (hopefully) shipping this week (today/tomorrow). Good thing Grand Junction is only a 1 day shipping route via UPS - should see it early next week - of course it could be late next week too. Oh well...

Yep, reached out to Roy this AM regarding the Green Mill Tactical 22LR Match(es). He sent me the dates (9/21, 10/19 & 11/16) and a sample COF. If everything goes as planned, I'll see you there on 9/21 with bells on. Just need to continue refining my DOPE and of course try out & chrono the SK Long Range ammo that I picked up from Mile High the other day.

Just finished up my first/very own/DIY KYL rack too. Should be shooting several sets of steel (purchased & DIY) this Saturday at BCGC - and stretching the Tikka to ~350 yards. Should be quite a bit of fun before the 600 meter match next weekend with the .308.

If you've never pushed any sort of centerfire out to 600, it's a hoot. Besides, bolts & semi's are both welcome, so all the AR people will shoot right next to bolt guys. Pretty sure I'll use my 308/XLR and not my AR-10, but I'll bring both in case someone needs a rifle to shoot.

Good thing about BCGC is the variety: 22LR bench rest, IDPA, Steel Challenge, high power matches, Mid/long range matches, juniors, etc. Fun group too.

The newest project is around 12 full length pistol bays for more pistol match & tactical training programs. The club is in the engineering stages now and expect to submit the final proposal later this Fall.

Seems like the Denver Metro/Front Range - from North of Ft. Collins to South of Colorado Springs - is a hotbed of shooting that I've only recently re-discovered. Seems there is some sort of rifle/pistol match/training going on every week. With mostly shooting 22LR, and mixing in only a bit of centerfire rifle/pistol, 22LR makes shooting both affordable and interesting!

Also, are muzzle brakes ok?

Agreed on the 22LR and bringing one back to shooting! Last year I only shot pistol (IDPA/Steel Challenge/Tactical Training), but I carry that same gun every day, so I need to be more than proficient.

A while back I "donated" my 22LR (rifle) to a friend for his daughter. I grew up with that 22 and shot it a bunch. Sammy was cleaning the 1" and 2" steel silhouettes at 25 yards and 50 yards with irons.

Seeing her clear the racks with irons got me thinking 22LR ain't so bad - and I bought the Tikka. With my eyes, I needed glass, but knocking those same 1" & 2" targets at 100 yards is just joy! Now I'm pushing my own steel out to 200+ yards this weekend.

FWIW, I have muzzle brakes on both of my 308's - (and) they haven't given me guff so far. All the AR's have flash hiders and on my AR-10 it'd be (an unlicensed) SBR if I pulled the brake off...

That reminds me, are 22LR muzzle brakes okay at Green Mill? I have them on all of my rifles and a few pistols too. Bummer if I'd have to pull them off to compete!

I haven't seen any brakes at GM, can't imagine there would be problem. I think on 22lr they're more esthetic than functional. Esthetic is good too.
