TAB Gear sling question

Just purchased one and will start learning how to use it this weekend. I've searched quite a bit but have only found the concepts of how it's used which are greatly appreciated.

What I'm needing is some details on how tight it should adjusted, does it matter if the sling mounts are on the side or the bottom (even saw one person suggest attaching them on the opposite side) and such. Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

What is the purpose of the removable center section where the length adjustment is? I'm sure there is a very valid reason I'm just not picturing it.

have you watched the videos on youtube from TAB themselves? What purpose are you using the sling for? Primarily carrying it around for hunting or are you planning on using it as a shooting aid also? The removable center is for when shooting in a slung position, although you don't necessarily have to remove it.

I have watched the videos, unless I'm missing one, where they show the seated and prone positions and that shows me the generals of using the sling. Just trying to decide if I have it tight enough or not. Won't be using it so much for hunting but bought it to use as a shooting aid.

As for the removable center, I saw where many were unclipping the forward section when using it as a cuff sling but I guess I didn't understand whey there was a center section that was removable from the rear section.

Granted, I may simply be over thinking this. I'll be trying the sling quite a bit over the next few weeks and will tweek the tension to see what seems the most stable.

Well, went back and re read the TAB sights description and apparently I missed this when I first began researching this sling:

"The reasons for the two buckles are two fold. First is allows the shooter to get out of the sling quickly because regardless of how you sling your rifle there is an accessible buckle you can unclip in order to get the rifle into action quickly. Second it is designed to allow the removal of a rifle from an injured soldier or person incase he is incapacitated."

Answers that question.

you can attach the sling to the rifle in any manner that suits you. I'm a right handed shooter and I like to attach the front of my slings on the right side of the stock in the front, and the left side at the butt of the rifle.

When attaching the front on the right side I find that the sling lays smoothly across the hand when slung up and also doesn't torque the rifle near as much as if it were on the left side. If you don't have a sling attachment point on the right side I'd attach it to the bottom of the stock and run it that way.

The center section has the webbing that you would use for your length of carry adjustment.

The adjustment at the front swivel is what you'll adjust for your positional shooting. Typically we suggest adjusting it for a kneeling position and it'll work pretty well for sitting too. You'll want it tight enough so that when the rifle is in position that it is pulled snugly into the shoulder pocket by sling tension.

Again, these are guide lines and suggestions, you should experiment to find out what works best for you. You get good at positional shooting in your living room getting into and out of positions and experimenting with different ways of setting the sling up while dry firing.

They work GREAT once you get the front loop adjusted right. Had to adjust a couple times but once I got it set it was amazing at how much steadier the offhand and kneeling/sitting positions are. You just have to adjust and try, then repeat. You will know when you find the "sweet spot".

Another option would be our new RAS sling. This sling is the same as our regular slings from the shooting loop back. The difference is that there's a rapid adjust buckle in between the shooters loop and the front sling swivel.

What this does is it allows the shooter unlimited adjustment options in that you can tighten or loosen the sling easily when in position. So, there's no more of the trial and error to get the sling adjusted for one position. The RAS allows very quick adjustment in any position.

Thanks so much to everyone for the responses. Got some time last night to start trying the TAB sling both seated and kneeling. I do believe I may have the length adjusted at least close to correctly. I get a good steady position with a minimal amount of discomfort. I certainly wouldn't want to have to hold it for several minutes but boy does it feel steady.

Very glad I made the purchase and really look forward to trying it with live fire soon.

Tony- Your PM box is full. I had a question, do you have any pictures showing the difference between the regular TAB sling with buckles versus no buckles?

Don't get me wrong- I get that the difference is 'no buckles' but I'm curious how the rear sections compare. Is the stiff three layer part on the no buckle? There must also be less bulk with out the buckled middle section.

I've been eyeing the RAS since I used a VTAC on my LMT MWS, same principle of around the back support and quick adjust, but the skinny front section of the VTAC leaves a bit to be desired for support.

I'm thinking they are smart money since it seems like every match I fumble around more and more with hooking and unhooking my 1907 for different positions/ wrapping around poles for support.

Wasn't there a 'simple' version of the QA sling with no buckles?

GRIPES!!! Posts like these cost me money!!!! Mr. Burkes, I was wondering, will there be an elite version of the ras sling?? I LOVE those buckles on the elite!! Yes theyre a bit heavier but they..... They.... Hell I dont know. I like them the best!!! I guess they just seem to fit the exeptional quality of a TAB sling better. Nothing against fastex buckles, they work good too. There is just something about metal buckles... Also, will it be possible to purchase the front loop only so one can swap it out on an elite gear sling one allready has??

Good question by the OP...I too am looking at a TAB so very interested in this video when it is available. I shop the RO pro-shop more than my wife likes but they carry some really good gear.

Sorry for the hijack but I have question about the RAS sling. When you adjust it for length does the tail get longer/shorter like the VTAC sling or does it remain the same like a VCAS sling?

Lonely_Wolf, yes sir, the three layer section is still there. There is just a longer section that goes up through a metal slider that links the shooter loop and back part together. There's also quite a bit less bulk on the no buckle sling. I'll get you some pictures to look at.

OFIS, there were quite a few guys who used the new RAS sling last week at the Bushnell Brawl down at Rifles Only, everyone really liked how it works in practically all match scenarios. I'm receiving reports back from some of our military customers as well and they're all loving the sling. The sling I'm talking about is our new RAS sling. It has the same adjustable buckle as our Quick Adjust slings but it's in between the shooting loop and the front swivel. The QA slings were primarily so a shooter could cinch the sling down quickly for carry. The new RAS is primarily designed as a shooting aid in practically any position, but also allows the shooter to cinch the sling down for carry as well. We haven't made any of the RAS slings without buckles yet but may do so in the future.

"Quality doesn't cost, it pays" We're always trying to improve on our existing products in addition to coming out with new products. We can easily make the RAS with Cobra Buckles, just let Lisa know what you're wanting and we'll hook you up. Yes, as soon as we get caught up with orders and building inventory we'll make some of the front of the RAS sling so you can purchase it to convert your existing TAB GEAR sling to the new RAS without having to buy a whole sling.

Maelstrom, the tail does get longer and shorter but it's not prohibitively long. You have plenty of adjustment room with the sling so you can easily adjust the webbing so you don't have much of a tail hanging out.

Awesome!! Ok so 1- O.D. RAS elite front loop only with flushcup. And 1 complete RAS Elite O.D. Green with HD QD swivels. (For my Remmy sporterized M1903 that Im turnin into a scout rifle) Yep Both are added to My "NEED" List. (want lists dont exist) Thanks again Mr. Burkes.

Here's a terrible picture showing three slings, you can get the point though.

The green sling is our regular TAB GEAR sling with the two buckles.
The Coyote sling isn our new RAS sling and you can see the rapid adjust buckle in between the shooting loop and front swivel.
The black sling is the TAB GEAR sling without the buckles. You still have the shooters loop and the triple thickness webbing at the rear for supporting the rifle. With both buckles removed you can see that the sling is much more streamlined that the other slings.

Thanks for the picks TBurkes. Great service. Loving my regular TAB sling with the 2 buckles. I can see where the RAS would be nice and might consider the upgrade piece when you have it available. Will it basically be the section from the front swivel to the quick adjust buckle or will it cover the entire loop? (Hope that makes sense)

I'm glad you're liking your sling Charlie. The retro will be from the buckle at the shooters loop forward. You'll just unclip the buckle from the regular loop and clip in the retrofit and you'll have the RAS sling. Simple enough that even I can do it.

In almost 50 years of shooting I have never been happy with any sling until the TAB Elite. They are now on all my rifles.

I am thinking of buying some for my pistols and as Christmas tree ornaments too. [laughing]

TAB slings are my favorite out there. I prefer the 2buckle-can run for hands free front carry, or remove the center piece for over the shoulder (although 3 trips to Rifles Only in the past years has me only running front muzzle down hands free anymore).
Will get my hands on a RAS one if these days and will probably be sold solid on them after what I've seen if them!
