Tac Ops "Tac 70" .338 Lapua in Birdsong Camo!

<span style="font-size: 11pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">Sniper's Hide members -

I had to run over to Mike's place last night, and while I was there I spotted a Tac Ops Tac 70 .338 Lapua Magnum built on a <span style="font-style: italic">Surgeon 1581 XL Action</span></span>. <span style="font-weight: bold">All metalwork is finished in Birdsong Camo and is mated to a <span style="font-style: italic">Manners T4A</span> stock painted in epoxy to match the Birdsong Camo on the metal. The trigger is superb and breaks at an incredibly crisp 2.5 lbs.

It was close to 2AM when I shot these photos so I had to use a flash, which washed-out some of the detail and color. Other than using MS Paint to airbrush out the serial number I didn't do any photo-processing, but no photos can ever do a Tac Ops weapon justice anyway - you have to shoot them! Enjoy!</span></span>

Is that a gouge in the paint where the bolt makes contact with it in the seventh picture down? I thought Birdsong would be tougher than that.

After cycling my Lima a few hundred times when I first received it I noticed that the birdsong came off in that same area. its a super tough finish but were metal rubs constantly no finish is gonna stay on.

Its' not a gouge, but some of the Birdsong "rubbed-off from repeated, forced contact between the base of the bolt handle shaft and the rear of the receiver while Mike Rescigno was testing for "slam-fire". The fit there is so unforgivingly tight that this would happen with just about <span style="font-style: italic">any</span> "applied coating". Tac Ops repeatedly and very forcefully slams bolts' closed to check for slam-firing. I've seen Mike Rescigno slam a bolt several dozen times just tweeking a trigger a bit. Mike Rescigno didn't alter the area for more clearance for the bolt handle because it wasn't his $1,800.00 action. Its is only Birdsong.

Birdsong is normally only .0002-.0003" (two-three ten thousandths' of an inch) thick in a single color, so the fact that the bolt handle contacted the rear of the receiver and rubbed the Birdsong off there while slam-fire testing shows how unforgiving the fit is there. The bolt-to-receiver raceway is also very tight, which is why the bolt did not receive the four-color Birdsong Camo - theres' just no room.

While Mike Rescigno prefers and recommends the good old Remington 700 actions, he does build on custom actions at the client's behest.

It IS pretty sick! A friend of mine may have to move out-of-state for employment, and a Tac Ops TAC .30 suppressor in titanium would be first on his list. A Tac 70 could be further down the road if he moves.

The Tac 70 .338 porn star in this thread isn't the first that has been built, but it is definitely a change-of-pace from the "norm" when you think of Tac Ops rifles. I love the Birdsong Camo too and my X-Ray 51 happens to be at Birdsong right now, but I couldn't justify the Camo for myself.

The wait can be long, yes. However, once said rifle is in-hand, the wait is soon all but forgotten. A Tac Ops owner's first trip to the range provides explicit confirmation that he or she made the right choice.

I can understand the coating coming off, but I was under the belief that it would take more than checking for a slamfire to do it. If you were to scrape the barrel against say a fencepost, would the birdsong show a mark?

Also, how is that camo applied? It almost looks like it's layered with that slight white edge around the individual colors. If the Birdsong is only .0002-.0003" thick I wouldn't expect to be able to see any sort of edge between the colors; is it smooth if you run your fingernail over it?

The birdsong is very thin. I think textured/3D you are asking about is devcon or a similar material that TacOps uses on all of their stocks for enhanced grip.

You haven't handled the rifle and operated the bolt so you don't understand. The clearance is pretty much zero where the Birdsong is abraded-away - it is metal-on-metal contact there <span style="font-style: italic">without slamming the bolt</span>. Therefore, the base of the bolt handle smacks the rear of the receiver pretty good when the bolt is slammed forward hard and fast. Short of Ion Bond or hard chrome I don't know of anything that would last there, at least on that particular action. I guarantee that there is no spray-on finish that would not abrade or wear there.

A fencepost? No. I've banged and scraped the barrel of my X-Ray 51 against wooden and steel supports and posts several times without any marks at all. However, the Green-T aft of my X-Ray 51's loading port shows wear from brass peening it continually as I run the bolt.

I don't know how the Camo is applied, but it seems like each color was masked-off and cut with a razor, producing a slight line between the colors. I would think that a base of Tan-T goes first, continuing with the next color in successive applications, stacking the coatings. There is a slight edge where one mask ends and another begins, but I think thats' because of the way the masks were cut.

If you must know for sure, you can always contact <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">Birdsong</span></span> and ask for Tyler or Wally.

I'll see what I can do. The owner is a LEO and shoots his Tango 51 at my local range, so if our schedules coincide and we can make it to the range the same day he'll let me squeeze-off a few rounds. Sweet!

The DROS has been started, and the owner has a PMII 5-25X56 0.1 MIL MSR waiting for it. A <span style="font-style: italic">Tac 70</span> .338 and PMII 5-25X MSR - what an awesome long range combination. The owner asked me if I knew of any ARDs' for the PMII 5-25X56 other than the Tenabraex, and I recommended the USO-made unit. Since USO makes runs of them in batches I called up Becky on the spot to check if USO had any in stock, which they did. Then I handed the phone over to the client and he ordered one.

As far as mike delivery time taking so long, it's not because of the hammer & chisel engraving work. It's because the his LEO sales take precedence and sometimes bump civilian orders back. With over 650 different agencies running Tac-Ops rifles, he is kept busy servicing them.

Medic103 was just looking out for MikeR (they're buds). It's worth noting, the civvie market is not the bulk of MikeR's business. So his engraving - which is entirely optional - is something he does to accommodate people. People should understand the 'wait' is because civvies are not a priority. As Medic103 pointed out, there are over 600 agencies who use Mike's rifles, that's a lot of high priority work in itself.

Understand I say this as a civvie who's waiting for his Tango-51.
