So Cal
Looking into taking some (shotgun, LR rifle) courses. Found Tac Pro and it's only three hours away. Rates are affordable, training appears good.

Does anyone have first hand experience with their classes?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

PS..I know you're going to suggest Rifles Only. I don't want to do Rifles Only, it's too military. I only want to learn LR, not ghillie suits and rucksacks.

Re: Tac Pro

I have been through several Rifle's Only PR classes and train ups.... Can't say I have seen a Rucksack... Maybe a 3 day pack here and there but the packs are just to carry your things. Though I have seen a ghillie suit at rifles only... Well not a a real ghillie, just a picture of one.

Truth is Rifles Only runs a great precision rifle course.

The benefit of going there is in the quality of the instruction. There's no required costume. I'm not as anti-tactical in my dressing habits as is Jacob, but I've done Rifle's Only in jeans and a t-shirt (and, of course, my glow in the dark cat pyjamas). And I did the 'Cup in brown 5-11's, a Carhart jacket, the rifle in an Eagle HSRC and using the daypack off of my motorcycle. I've been to both schools and I can tell you that Jacob and the guys will be there, all the time, to teach you, and won't try to sell you stuff.

Re: Tac Pro

Rifles Only is the very best training you can get in TEXAS or anywhere else for that matter, the fact they train noobs and our nations very best is a goodthing, if you want to learn from the best go to Rifles Only. Next on the all TEXAS list is Tigervalley outside Waco, TJ is like Jacob, they have the gift of teaching, and last but not least in TEXAS is TacPro, the quaility of training is very good, facilities are nice, but IMHO RO and TV give you a better understanding shooting and you get to stay on site, TacPro is hotel only, and there ain't alot of choices.

Re: Tac Pro

Ed,

I don't own a ghillie suit, and if I'm not being forced to dress like a soldier I want no part of camo (or a heavy pack, for that matter). When I'm getting paid to dress-up these days it's either a tacky polyester/rayon mix, or fine silk in something from Canali, and you can guess which one I prefer.

But when I go to a rifle school I want to sleep in a bunkhouse if they've got one, and in my van or a tent if they don't. Because if you hang around, pull up a chair by the fire, and keep your eyes and ears open you can learn from the other students as well. So I go to RO, or wherever, and I wear the same clothes for a few days, and shower once in a while whether I need it or not. Because, to paraphrase Chiller, there's no short-cut to the learning curve.

Re: Tac Pro

As 427 outlined, there are three FANTASTIC facilities in TX to learn precision rifle. If time and funds allowed, I would take lessons from all three. Bill, Jacob and TJ can teach anyone a thing or two about using a rifle. I don't think one could wrong choosing either of the three.

I have taken instruction from TacPro and highly recommend it. I have also spent a little time at Rifles Only and Tiger Valley and would like to take classes at both one day.

Re: Tac Pro

Appreciate the responses, certainly a lot more research is required on my end.

I'm out of town starting tomorrow, feel free to add your thoughts, but I won't be responding until my return.

Re: Tac Pro

Ed,
I already PM'd you but I do want to set the record straight for anybody who might read this. Rifles Only is NOT too military. Yes, we do military classes but those are completely separate from the classes that are listed on the website. The classes on the website are for anybody who wants to attend. It doesn't matter if you are tall, short, skinny, fat, young or old. Nothing is required of the students for any type of military format. Our classes are 100% fundamentals and driving your firearm whether it is rifle, carbine, or pistol. We teach you how to shoot, plain and simple

! There is no magic to this and we certainly do not expect our students to be in shape, do pushups, or wear ghillie suits. Not sure where that is coming from but I wanted to let you know. LOL, we even break in the heat of the day to embrace the south Texas Culture....siesta time

.
If you have any questions just call me, email me, or PM me. I'll answer any questions you might have. If I don't have the answer I will certainly do my best to get the answer for you.

Re: Tac Pro

I've had instruction at both TacPro and RO, and shot comps at them and Tiger Valley as well. All are great places to learn and shoot, but my highest recommendation would be RO. Their attention to detail and instruction are truly top notch.

Re: Tac Pro

Tac Pro will provide good solid instruction with a heavy emphasis on the fundamentals. If you pay attention and go with the program, you will be shooting well when you are done.

Re: Tac Pro

I shoot alot at Tac Pro when I am home its the nicest plase to shoot within 3 hours of me and last I was there they were adding a cover ont he 1k line. My home schedule and the LR class schedule dont really seem to work well with each other. One of these days I might plan an R&R around a class.

Re: Tac Pro

As Mr. Melick said, when they instituted a mandatory range member ship to shoot past 200 yards it no longer became a viable option for me. I don't know if the policy is still in effect, but if it has been lifted I might start going out there again.

Re: Tac Pro

They had to institute a qualification standard since some people were acting like idiots and flinging rounds over the berm! Apparently the neighbors were not appreciative.

Its like $150 a year and range fee goes from $15 down to $5. As far as the Qual I can see a good reason for it. Other members were always more than helpful. Georges in Glen Rose is like $10 now and its 100 only. Pigeon Road is about the same $10'ish and only 100. There is ridge runners in Breckenridge, I think its $70 a year and its come and go as you please with target at 1250. Eastland rifle and pistol club or whatever its called is $50ish a year and has $200.

Not a bad deal when you look at the big picture. Breckenridge is cheaper but its also 80 miles from Granbury opposed to the 40 mile trip to Tac Pro. Mileage difference would be similar from Ft. Worth.

I understand why they instituted their membership and 1000-yard qualification policies, but things really changed around that time when Bill ran off Alice as well.

Next weekend I'm heading to one of my favorite long-distance ranges, Badlands Tactical in Grandfield, OK.

Re: Tac Pro

Was wondering about peoples thoughts on Tac Pro courses and luckly found this thread before starting my own. I have a certificate for a 3 day course but don't know if I'll be able to use it. Was curious what people thought of they're course, for someone fairly new to precision/long range shooting. Hopeing to help me make a decision to try and go before it expires or try to sell/trade it.
