I am thinking about hydro-dipping some plastic I have.

Anyone know of some good peeps that do it??

Also, is this stuff durable? Is it just paint?

I dont know alot about it but I have seen some cool camo pics.

Thanks for any info you many have!!!

Thanks

Jake

Jake, there is a place here in spokane, Liquid Transformations. They have done some stuff for me, and yes it is very durable.

It's some sort of printed film that they lay on water. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think its ink or paint... just some ultra thin film.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

I had some hand gards and a but stock on an ar done. My bro C had his AX done in multi cam and it turned out awsome. I think he gave somewhere around 2-300 bucks for that.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

Its a vinyl film. Chemicals get sprayed on the film as it lays on the water. The chemical breaks down the vinyl and burns the pattern into the base coat. My friend does it and is in the final stretch of being able to offer it to the public. He now has his business license but has to get ffl to be able to do firearms legally. To do firearms now the owner must be present.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

I saw a really nice article in the magazine "RECOIL" a 3-gun mag, about using dye (RIT) to dye the plastic parts a home using vinyl tape cut in patterns to mask - it looked pretty easy and I will be trying it as a inexpensive way to deal with plastic parts. It was in Issue 2 Spring 2012 if anyone wants to try to find the article.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

I saw a television show where they were hydro-dipping a motorcycle fuel tank during a custom build.
They took dollar bills (100s?) and made a color copy into a large 3'x3' sheet. This was then made into the film that was floated on top of the water. The fuel tank was then dipped through the film into the water, leaving a perfect copy of the money on the tank.
They can make designs from any graphic.
Interesting stuff.

Guys, there are a ton of videos on YouTube and our member stacyp did his stock on his own with a $99 kit and it looks awesome.

Check it out, it looks like you can do it at home very easily!

i had a guy dip two of my stocks for around a $100.00 each. they both turned out well. the deer skulls has been banged around real well and no chipping that i am aware. the cheetah is on a hogue rubber stock and there has been some chipping. both were gloss clear coated. he also does satin and matte. i am not a safe queen w/either rifle...so if they get a little "beat-up"...i don't care. but they seem to be holding their own.

This is the business I outta get involved with. There are so many people out there looking for this to be done, and none of the companies out there seem to be taking on new business.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

If you screw it up or decide you don't like the look can it be easily removed without damaging the stock? I have a hard time telling myself to try it on an $800 manners stock...

What part of WV does your friend live in?

It can be removed as easy as any paint. If you do have it done make sure you use a reputable business as there are a lot of people out there doing it that use inferior paints and films and don't know what they are doing. If you have any questions shoot me a PM , I use to offer this and can put you in touch with a certified tech in your area.

Don't try and do it your self. If you do I will guarantee you will mess it up and have to send it off to someone to fix. The videos make it look simple, but it takes a lot of practice and know how to get it right.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

I went to B&C web site and their main web page opens, the main text body indicates they are discontinuing hydro dipping. I had planned on dipping my McRee with Multicam to match my Eberlstock X3 but I'm thinking its not worth the trouble.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

I have had a few things done. Archery shop here in town does a lot of it. The stocks show wear from use for sure. It's not nearly as durable as good paint. After one year of bow season the places where my hand touches the riser are worn thru the pattern and into the base coat.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

Hydro dipping is very cool looking stuff because of the many different available patterns as well as the fine detail in some of those patterns. Cant speak for the durability of the stuff as I haven't had the opportunity to test it out.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

Here is a 17 hmr i did earlier this summer. The film is very resialiant and i add a matt clear coat to protect it and it seems to hold up pretty well.

This is the 5th rifle i have done and there is a learning curve to get it right but they are turning out better every time. I'm thinking about trying my AR but haven't decided on a which camo i want to do yet.

Re: **Talk to me about hydro-dipping**

Some of the videos forget to mention that after you dip it, it will still be tacky and you use water to rinse off the residue. Keep gently rinsing till the tacky feeling is gone then let it dry and clear coat it matte or gloss and your done.
