Simple question, though the answer may be more elusive:

What makes a scope robust/rugged?

I am concerned more with the technical aspects of scope construction, design considerations, and materials selection.

As with any attribute, the level of attainment comes with a price. I'm guessing one of the direct implications of a more "robust" scope would be an increase in weight. Is there anything else?

1. Thicker 1 piece tube made from aircraft aluminum or steel
2. Cemented in lenses
3. Chrome silicon springs
4. Anti scratch coating on exposed lens surfaces
5. Precision fitted components for minimum internal rattle
6. Tough coatings/anodizing on exterior
7. Turrets made of strong alloys

One clue is when the manufacturer instructs you to beat it hard against a phone book if dust is visible in the sight picture.

if they have a massive government over-run then it is in fact robust. Also if the tube can be dual used as a fleshlight it is not robust
