Tell me about your 300 fireball bolt guns.

I have a 300 fireball AR and love it, I am thinking about putting together a bolt gun, or mabby weighting for Rem to put out one in 300 blk.

If you don't mind I would like to see your 300 whisper / 221 fireball or whatever you call it, and tell me what it took to build it!

I made mine from a Stevens 200 action (same as a savage 10fp action just no accu-trigger).

I have two different barrels for it 1st is a pacnor 1in7" twist that is 17" long. The 2nd barrel is a McGowen 1in11" twist that is 20" long and custom contoured to fit a front sight barrel band at 20".

Building it did not take long at all and was not hard either. Both barrels are prefit barrels meaning they were threaded and chambered at the barrel manufacturer. All I had to do was take the original stevens .223 barrel off the action and fit the new barrel on using a ptg .221 fireball headspace gauge. I set mine for minimum headspace. It took me 5 minutes to do. You also need a barrel nut wrench if you do not already have one.

So the pacnor is a scope only rifle setup. But the mcgowen is setup for open sights. I have a lyman front sight with inserts that is mounted on a lipski front sight barrel band. The rear sight is a centra sight with an adjustable aperture. I put the action in a choate tactical stock and installed a karstens cheek rest on it to get the proper cheek weld when shooting open sights. I have also filled the butt of the stock with lead shot to balance out the rifle.

After a go ahead from the match director I built both rifles for a buffalo shoot that we have locally. I have shot with them at 3 different shoots and have to use LEAD bullets. The match director no longer runs the shoots since he was getting a lot of "flak" from people complaining about my 300 whisper rifle. I am completing against 45/70 rifles which have not problem knocking over buffaloes at 300y. I hit two different buffaloes 4 times each (a total of 8 times) and the buffalo just stood there looking at me. That cost me 8 points. If anything my 300whisper with its weaker cartridge is a deficit when competing with those other more powerful guns. Oh well I hated loading and shooting lead anyways. Best accuracy I got was 3" groups with lead. When I shoot amax bullets I get 3/4" 5-shot groups at 100y. I will see if I can scrounge up some pictures of the whisper setups I have.

Try the HOWA 1500 action. You will be happy. 20 moa picatinny bases are available and they just plain work. The HOWA uses an AR15/M-16 style extractor and is 100% reliable for feeding, extraction and ejection. The problem is the really short, stubby whisper cases. They have a tendancy to fall off the extractor before they hit the ejector on the Remingtons and some other actions. What you end up with is an empty case sitting on top of the top round in the magazine. Even my CZ527/Mauser action (my first bolt-action whisper attempt)wasn't 100% for ejection with the whisper. My HOWA has NEVER failed to feed/extract/eject. Again, they just plain work. I picked up a .223 barreled action and had it rebarreled in .300 whisper.

175gr. lead bullets with gas check shot at 1900fps.

I wanted to use amax bullets but match director said lead bullets only.

This load will not reliably knock over a buffalo, rams will knock down most of the time unless you are shooting his legs, turkeys, pigs, and chickens will knock down when hit with this load.

Did I mention that I won the last match I was in. I scored a perfect score except for the 2 buffaloes that I did not knock down. I hit those chickens at 300 with open sights on my whisper.

I used a rem 700 action from a 17fireball that helps a ton with extraction. Also I just ordered a AICS 223 mag from Triad and plan to try it out on my other AICS before I go with a CDI bottom metal. I am think this will help my feeding issue.

I've built a number of 300-221's on a few different actions.
The 700 Rem was the first and while its accurate enough it does have some problems with the extractor/ejector. We fixed the problem a bit by extending the amount the ejector pins could move in order to keep the fired case held in the extractor a little longer. That did help but its still an issue. The action is pretty large too so I went to others....
The Remington 799 is a small mauser action built in Serbia by Zastava. Its a very good little action and much smaller/lighter than the 700. I think its much more appropriate for the smaller round. Accuracy was good and there were not really any problems with the conversion from .223 to a real cal. Scope mounts and or rings are readily available for the rifles too. Unfortunately the rifles are no longer being imported.
The best of all I've seen so far is the CZ 527. They are available in a number of suitable cals for conversion like 204 ruger, 223 etc. The guns are also a smaller version of the Mauser 98 like the 799 Rem but are a bit more well done. They use a detachable mag which will require some mods to work with the 300 but nothing too tough. The receivers are strong and solid and the trigger is really good. I might add that its got a set-trigger which requires a simple set procedure of pushing the trigger forward to drop the pull from 3lb to about 1lb. Its adjustable too so your mileage will likely vary. My only real complaint with the CZ is the scope rings. They normally come with the rifle but selection of height is nonexistant and aftermarket rings aren't available either...at least as far as I know. The CZ like the 799 is a lot smaller and lighter than a 700 which in my book is a big plus. Why use a cannon action for a rifle...?? Please don't misread me here. I like the 700 but not so much for this small round.
There are other choices out there like the Howa that was pointed out....SAKO had a small action which may or may not be available new but actions and rifles are still around on gunbroker etc. The SAKO is a fine action too.

Been there, done that too. Used Warne rings. Scope mounting on the CZ sucks. In order to clear the bolt handle, the rings have to be way high. Not optimum for sure. Here's some pics of one I did a few years ago. Second pic is the modded magazine. Just mill out the "dimple" so that those fat .30 cal bullets will fit better in that .22 cal space.

Aside from getting a .17 Fireball donor, what is the best/most reliable extractor fix for a 300 AAC Blackout? Sako or M16 style? I'm thinking of using a Rem 700 .204 action to build a 300 BLK and would like to know the best way to get it done the first trip to the smith.

I'm not sure how much the Sako extractor will help you. The issue is usually that the case begins to rotate out of the gun as soon as it's free of the chamber but because it's so short, all of the ejector throw is used up and by the time the clase is clear of the receiver there's not much spring left on it.

If I were doing a 700 though I'd probably do the Sako extractor anyway and consider giving the ejector plunger a little more throw. Of course, you may just want to ask the smith to check it for ejection problems before he does all the work as some do seem to work from the factory just fine.

Just to clarify, I meant have it barreled first then have him check it for good ejection. I'm not sure how clear I was on that before. I know of guys who went with a .223 and it ejected fine as is after the re-chamber without messing with the ejector/extractor.

I pieced together parts for a 700 build while I was in Iraq. Had Predator Customs out of Tn. build it for me. I used a .223 Remington 700 donor, McMillan stock, 16.5" Pacnor barrel and a Badger M5 DBM with AICS .223 mags. I'm still shooting factory Corbon ammo so I haven't loaded anything for it yet. Also haven't had any extraction or loading problems with the regular 700 bolt and AICS mags.

Those are Warne rings on my CZ527 pictured above. Scope mounting on the CZ still sucks. Just have to have the scope up way too high to make sure you clear the bolt handle. You can run into eye-relief issues too.

I just finished mine on a Stevens Model 200 action as well. I used a McGowan barrel.

Its one of the older staggered feed magazines. I'm having some trouble with getting it to feed. it almost seems like the feed lips on the mag are too short as the round pops out of the magazine before the tip of the bullet has entered the barrel. This leads to the bullet tip catching on the back of the barrel and hanging up. Don't know how to address the issue....

I built a 300/221 off of a CZ mini mauser LH action. 1-8 Lothar Walther tr. Mark at Losok Customs screwed it together. The gun shoots through an AAC 762 sd.
Sub moa gun with 125 ballistic tips. Just under moa with 22o smk's.
POI shift between the 2 rounds provides an 8 3/4 drop or rise depending which way you are going with your ammo. Always repeatable. A whitetail nightmare, once you work your load up it is a solid performer.
I am getting ready to ship it out to Selph Arms to have the chamber opened up to 300 blackout hopefully this month.
