Tempest Builds..Lets See em

Well i got my BnA in and for the life of me can't get it on the 30 hanger. It's like the hanger is off a little. I can get the rear in then can't get the front, get the front in and can't get the rear. That or one of my pins has been beat to shit and is making it difficult as hell.

Anyone have this issue?

Recent hunting build just finished. 7 SAUM.

Well i tried to get the BnA in the 700...no go. Same issues. Gonna contact bullet central or Chris.

after all the shit you went through to get this rifle built, for the life of me I can't understand why you continue to fuck with a sorted rifle. I get experimenting, but I don't have your shitty luck so......

Lol Chris that's a valid question. Though i was never that happy with either of my CE 2-stages, but it did work. I can run the CE single stage i picked up for dad, despite it rubbing a little.

A nice 40x, cleaned up is hard to beat.

Maybe a Huber 2 stage? I have never shot one but I haven't heard of anyone bitching about them breaking or needing special cleaning techniques either. They don't go real low, but these are field rifles. I get you have spent the money on the B&A. I really do understand the desire to get a rifle perfect, but perfect changes over time and the more rifles and kit I have to cycle through the worse I seem to shoot. I hope it works out for you.

Dont do a huber. Terrible on both of the tempests I tried it on. Pulls with double the factory set pull weight when put on the tempest. Even after adjustment (by direction of huber himself). I could get the weight down, but the first stage when to hell.

So far, my favorite is a regular jewell hvr.

I have faith that it will be fine. After all they have their own hanger for it and i've seen claims of it being fine with the tempest. It just seems the holes aren't lining up. Couldn't get it in my 700 either, i should've known with my luck lol. Not a huge deal really i'm starting grad school in a week, less a match pops up in providence which is also in Jackson, it's unlikely i shoot one.

I'm not really shooting for lighter weight so much as just a clean 2-stage. Maybe that's my mistake is being a 2-stage fan and they just don't seem to coincide with customs. I want a nice first stage and a distinct wall on the second stage. No creep, just a wall that breaks like a single once on the second stage. Basically how a 2-stage is supposed to perform. Both my Timney's exhibited take up and creep once on the second stage. They were serviceable but left quite a lot to be desired. So much so that i'd almost prefer a crisp single stage if i had to choose between the Timney CEs.

Tempest 6.5 SAUM in my bullpup chassis. Action is smooth except on bolt close. Big "wall" from cocking, appears it isn't normal based on other's actions. I had the lugs on the inside of my bolt shear off. Horizon did next day me another firing assembly to their credit. It is very accurate.

Pins on the Bix are a pain, but once you get them in once you're good to go. I am usign their hanger and it works great with their hanger. I could not get used to the overtravel and have been using it for 6 months. I just put my jewell back in and groups instantly went from struggling to shoot 1/2" at 100 to 1/4". I'm considering selling my bix but am undecided at the moment.

I thought it might just be my hanger setup but man I couldn't get it on the 700 either. It was an absolute PITA. According to Dave the 30 hanger that comes with the Tempest should be fine and their hanger is only required for the competition series of triggers. Granted i can't say on the matter because i can't even get the thing pinned into any gun of mine.

Dremel time! haha I've got the competition series. I need to get my hands on one of the tacsports.

Like you stated according to their site it should be no issue w.030 hanger for the Tempest. I run a jewel in mine and I'm beginning to think that's all you can run with this action besides a tuned Remmy. Love the action and have had no issues but will not go with another on future builds

Triggers certainly seem to be it's achilles heel. Though the Timney 2-stage i ran without issue largely. It needed fitting to the mini-chassis of course but the action ran fine with it. I'm not blaming the Tempest on this one though i can't get the Tacsport in my Remington 700 either. I think the trigger holes are out of spec.

In some of the interviews from SHOT 2017, George seemed to be really pushing the Tempest towards the Triggertech offerings. I have a standard Triggertech 1.5#, and i think its fantastic.

I tried a triggertech on two tempests, and didnt like how it performed. Simialr to the huber. On both of my actions, it just pulled heavy on the tempest, but not on a remington, regardless of hanger. Im a little biased though, as i dont care for the triggertech anyway. I returned mine where I bought it.

So what trigger do you run on your 2 Tempests?

To update, i contacted Chris who guided me through getting it in. In summary he pretty much stated the holes are made slightly out of spec to ensure i tight fit, because they don't want the trigger moving. Haven't fired it yet, but i have it on the 30 hanger. I had to use a punch and some force to get it in. Haven't fired yet to see how the 30 hanger likes the TacSport.

Keep us posted Will! Is there a single stage trigger option that can get under 1lb that is known to work with a Tempest?

Yes the Tempest hanger that bullet central sells is designed specifically for their competition line of triggers.

I'll say that getting that pin in was an absolute PITA. I had to really hammer it with a punch, not full swing or anything but hard enough that i didn't feel comfortable doing it. It looked like the pin had pushed some of the hanger out as well. I've held the thing up to the light several times with the hanger over the hole to make sure they line up and it looked fine. But it's working none the less. Chris was more than helpful though and told me not to worry they would take care of me if something went wrong. Can't commend him enough on the customer service.

The trigger is very different, from anything i've had. The adjustments are fantastic and extremely responsive. You can adjust sear engagement, pull length, 1st stage pull weight, and second stage pull weight. The trigger shoe is also to my surprise one of my favorites. When i first got it, i was a little worried at how thin it was.

The pull however is what is so different. First stage is fine, the wall is fine, it's after the break that it throws me off. For instance when i pull my CE single stage or any other trigger i've used for that matter it's as if i'm pulling on a glass rod, which then snaps. You feel the trigger fall back under the tension of your finger as the pressure is released, and it sends a vibration through the gun. The TacSport breaks as clean any trigger i've pulled. Though the tension remains. Almost as if said theoretical glass rod doesn't break, just moves back. It's very different is my point and nearly impossible to explain over text lol. You'll just have to pull one. Granted this could just be mine, given how i got the pin in, i'm not entirely sure it's okay but time will tell. I messaged Shane to see if he thought the same about his.

I wouldn't let this sway you from their single stage at all though, heard too many incredible things about the single stage, and am getting used to the 2-stage, it's just different.

Well now that its back from getting the coating fixed, the action and bolt honed and polished it now runs buttery smooth.

Specs: 24" Benchmark 1/8 spiral fluted barrel with APA Lil'Bastard, MPA Comp BA chassis (most recent version with full RRS cuts) in burnt bronze, 0 MOA rail with 30 MOA Sphur mount and SB PM II.

So after 1200rnds or so, i believe my action has finally broken in for the most part. I did remove the barrel, and file down any sharp edges on the breach ring, then polish the holy-hell out it before re-assembly. I ran about 200rnds yesterday, and seemed to only have 1-2 issues with the bolt freezing up just before the front lugs enter the forward part of the action. Still seems like the round is getting hung up on something vs the action actually binding. If i run the action hard and fast, i dont have much issue with it.

I did call GAP a few weeks ago, and while they said they would ask some other techs and call me back, I never received a follow up.

I run the B&A 2 stages too and I've noticed an issue with the trigger safety in the Tempest.

When bolt closed ready to fire move the safety lever back half way between safe and fire and then pull the trigger.

You should ear a "clicky" noise but no release of the firing pin. If you push the lever to the fire position the pin is released.

If you put it on safe and the on fire everything is fine and the trigger can be used and fire again..

Did you tried the 20 hanger?

I haven't used it yet. I have it in the rifle and have dry fired it, that's it. My shooting has come to a screeching halt since last monday when i started my masters program. I do plan to shoot at providence here in MS though if they host, considering i'm now here. Though i haven't noticed an issue as i've never purposefully moved the safety to mid travel and tried to pull the trigger. I have it in the 30 hanger, and honest to God probably couldn't change hangers if i wanted without serious force. I beat that rear pin into the trigger to get it to fit. So much so that i didn't feel comfortable doing so.

Are yours spongy as i described earlier? Do they feel different than any other trigger you've had?

So I feel like I've finally pinpointed the issue with my action. When the round is entering the chamber, it is going in at a slight upward angle, and being wedged in the chamber before straightening out to fully seat. I'm running AW mags, and can't tell if the mag is holding onto the cartridge too long. I have a magpul AICS that I've tried cutting the feed lips shorter, but that didn't seem to correct the issue. My chamber does have the bevel cut into it, but I'm not sure if it's safe to increase that bevel into more of a shallower feed ramp. Any thoughts fellas?

Yeah really hard to get the pins in but it look like it was designed like this on purpose even if I think it's a stupid move.

Spongy a bit yes. As you described it is a weird and unique feeling that cannot be described easily.

The wall felling is there but the beak is kind of a surprise and ghostly. It break crisply but not likey Triggertech or Jewel. It's is a more diffused feeling without much feedback.

Right now the safety issue is big for me since I use it in PRS match so I'll use my Triggertech until the B&A is prove reliable.

It's a big deception for me.

Who built your rifle? Can you take a pic of the chamber chamfer?

I'm a big fan of generous chamfers on my barrels. Some smiths do seem to go very minimal in general. The tempest print is pretty specific about it though, so i did mine exactly as it shows. Seems to feed fine in creedmoor.

PhotoGrid_1503673675378.jpg Here is the drawing for a 308 sized case. You can get some measurements off this and have a basic idea of how close your barrel is.

It looks right to me. On the cases that bind, is there evidence of it on the brass?

The two i've done look the same as yours.

No evidence of any markings on the brass since day 1...that's why its taken me forever just to figure out what/where the bind actually is. I just blew up both pictures sideXside, and the only difference i can see is that perhaps you've sanded/blended both inside/outside edges of the chamfer...is that right?

When you push a round out of the mag with you're finger does it go up? Could be that the mag is too far in the chamber and pushing from the bottom of the rim of the cartridge?

If the action cycles smoothly when not chambering a round, and everything is in spec on axis then it's unlikely the problem lies in the chamber, breaching ring, or barrel chamfer.

Have you tried adjusting the depth of the mag. Maybe in the event that it's portruding too much into the chamber?

have you perhaps tried to change latches and run an AICS mag to see if it changes anything?

Yes, the edges are just slightly melted with 320 grit.

I've played with the feed lips:
1. AW mag - spread out the lips to see if the mag would let go of the round sooner...made the issue worse
2. AICS mag - cut short the feed lips of a magpul AICS to see if the mag would let go of the round sooner...made the issue worse

I haven't played with:
1. Seating depth of the bullet - I've only began reloading, only shooting 143g ELDX loaded to 2.80" OAL. Perhaps seating to max mag length (+2.90") might straighten out the cartridge sooner?
2. Mag seating depth - I know I can't sit the AW or AI mags any higher than they are now because the bolt will hit the lips. I will try to sit the mags slightly lower tonight and test feed some rounds.

As always, thanks boys!

I just finished this build for a friend. He and I are very happy with how it came out!

Thanks for uploading this Will. I haven’t been shooting much at all so my recoil management was a little outta wack. I also waiting to watch the bullet impact the plate before running the bolt. I can drop a couple seconds if I dont wait and run a hair faster. If I get a chance to go practice before my next match I’ll run this again on camera and see if I can drop it to 15-16 seconds.
