Beautiful day today in our hood. Sun was out, water down if not gone and roads were passable. We are fortunate. Many many others are not.

Not to change from the glorious MSM subject. But so much rain has fallen the the weather service has had to add 2 new colors to the rain fall maps. This will truely be an event to remember. So far i find it less of a biblical catastrophe than Katrina. Is that due to texas vs Louisiana? Did we learn something since Katrina? Or MSM coverage between the 2?
My new assignment is in Houston/Beaumont, I gotta check in at the hall in Pasadena on something like Monday and possibly start work Tuesday in Beaumont. My Texas folks is that possible to drive into Pasadena then go to Beaumont?
Has anyone seen certain verification that I10E from Houston is shut down for a structural issue on eastbound bridge? Temp or longer issue?

Pasadena is pretty badass. Just a few spots on the edges of the roads that might get your hood wet if you drive like an asshole. By tomorrow, since the rain has diminished, I wouldn't think a trip down 225 to 146 to I10 to beaumont would be a challenge at all, with Pasadena as an origin. Maybe right there after the Fred Hartmann bridge you might find some water, but I doubt it. Then down close to where that raceway is, maybe some more there, but probably just a couple of inches if anything.
Even though Red Bluff is still blocked off on the way to Seabrook, I was able to drive all the way down it both ways with a 3" lift and 31s without ever having water contact the under carriage.
Definitely gonna be changing the front/rear diff oil and tranny/xfer case oil after this shit, though. Did some boating in my XJ on Sunday and Monday, and down on Lakeside in Seabrook the water was still pretty thick on the way out.
Not sure about the Beltway, it tends to collect in some parts.
Wtf you got going on in Pasadena that has you going out to Beaumont?
EDIT: Looks like maybe some road closures on I10, so maybe take 90 instead.

Katrina was a shit show for several reasons. This is just my run down as a (former) New Orleanian who was a cop in south Alabama during the storm:
Like Harvey, Katrina was, and was predicted to be, a fairly minor weather event for the Gulf until the last 12-24 hours. Plus the predicted track shifted over 100 miles the critical time period for effective evacuation.
New Orleans is effectively an island when it comes to entering or leaving the city. One way or another you're going to have to traverse a bridge over a body of water to get to it. After Katrina the "twin span" heading north to Slidell was replaced with a bigger bridge, but it's still inadequate for evacuation unless both spans are set up to run north. The Causeway heading north across the lake and "12 mile bridge" heading west over the swamp at the edge of the lake are still the same as pre-K. Heading south would be really dumb and even more difficult.
As has been heavily belabored, NOLA is at or below sea level. The old city stayed mostly dry but the areas that were always there for the city to drain into were eventually suburbanized and habitated. So a huge amount of folks were living in the flood plain of a flood plain. NOLA has some of the largest floodwater pumping infrastructure in North America if not the world. Those pumps required some level of human operation and that system failed to function properly.
NOLA survived Katrina pretty well overall until a Corps of Engineers levee/floodwall failed and dumped Lake Ponchartrain into the city. That's the wall that Bush 43 blew up because he hated black people according to Kanye.
The poorest and least self-sufficient of the residents, had they even been instructed to do so ( rather than shelter in the Superdome) had no means of evacuating the city. No one knew exactly where landfall was going to be, so getting evacuation buses set up and in place was positively impossible ( if they could've even gotten into the city).
Then said residents, denied their daily support by the government, devolved into absolute pure chaotic fucking lunacy almost instantly. Multi-generational lack of self reliance came to a head in minutes or hours. Just outside the city, past the "lower 9th ward" that got all the media frenzy, is St Bernard Parish. 100% of St Bernard went under water. The citizens of "da parish" spent roughly TEN FUCKING DAYS in floodwater up to the second story of many homes before the first help arrived. Ya know who the very first true assistance to St Bernard came from, the Canadians. The Canadians made it to a suburb of NOLA before anyone else because our govt was busy quelling riots and dodging bullets in USCG helos trying to rescue the poor of NOLA. Private contractors were policing the city because an alarming portion of NOPD was unable to help or went AWOL.
All of that hat shit made for fantastic news fodder (minus St Bernard) because it was fucking 3rd world bullshit here in America. Meanwhile, just a few miles away, the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Alabama took the STRONG side of the storm. If you drive those areas today the devastation is still clear. It was like a fucking MOAB went off in some of those areas. I was on the coast evacuating people within 24hrs after landfall and there were still bodies in the streets, no food, no water, all the police vehicles were flooded, casino barges were sitting in parking lots, the walking wounded were staggering down streets looking for missing loved ones, and do you know how much the media covered that shit? Not at fucking all because those people on the Coast came together and helped each other however they could. They formed neighborhood militias, they shared what was left of essentials, and they started cleaning up days before the first real help arrived.
Sorry for the diatribe. I can't have a short conversation about Katrina for several reasons, a few of them that aren't likely to go away anytime soon.
My half-assed answer to your simple question is that Katrina in NOLA fed the MSM bloodlust for the worst of human society. The fact that they could blame it on W made it even better. Being a fair person, Houston should send the absolute WORST of their evacuees to NOLA just as was done to them after Katrina. I had cop buddies throughout South La who's job it was to prevent any NOLA evacuees from exiting I-10 and wreaking havoc on their way west. Not pretty by any means, but the Cajundome in Lafayette didn't need to be rebuilt from the inside like the Superdome did.
Fuck that was too much typing on a pad. I know it doesn't make any sense, but I'm too menatally exhausted to clean it up and edit it.

Made perfect sense to me. I had a buddy come down from Mississippi after Katrina, only to arrive and endure Rita. He took a new job in New York with GE, quit his old gig Friday, and he was supposed to have moved there by today to get setup to start work on September 1st. He exited Houston Monday, being sent away well by Harvey, that motherfucker... He's up in Arkansas now, as of 5 hours ago. Dude had a way with cooking without utensils.
We had lots of discussions about the myriad of fuckups in LA, and how shit was totally different where he was from. I'd like to think I was a part of that difference here in TX. I went out and got groceries for folks in my neighborhood, cut up some downed trees/branches on some of the back roads that were causing some traffic issues, and helped a very drunk old lady find her hotel room.
Not as much work as I'd anticpated, but I don't have a boat, or a solid high-water vehicle. There also weren't many opportunities around to do good. People around here were kicking ass as far as I could tell. Piles of cut up shit all over the place before I even got there. I did discover that my XJ won't die easily, though. I was pleased to learn that I was right in thinking I'd make it as long as that water didn't get above my left blinker. Got a lot of oil to change soon, though. Probably tomorrow I'm gonna dump out the diffs, tranny, xfer case, and maybe engine oil as well. Also gotta purge the innerds, that bitch be wetter than Houston right now. It's a blessing that bitcoin busted 4600 today.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Good folks are even better in a crisis and bad folks are even worse. I was always stuck on continuous 12-24hr shifts during and after hurricanes, going back to Andrew in 92. I always hated having to tell neighbors that if they could wait till I had some daylight to work with that I'd help them out. With Katrina I at least ended up working some aid facilities, soId call home and have my (now ex) wife check with people to see what they needed and would either get them through the line or bring them home what I could.
I remember the weeks Post-K with a mixture of pride at how many of us came together and utter sadness at the devastation. Every trip down 90 through MS reminds me of the people that will likely never live to see their family homes rebuilt.

Better fuel up-San Antonio running out very quickly. Was told by someone very much in the know that 1/3rd of country will be short of fuel inside of 2-3 days. Took me 4 stops to find diesel.
That is one reason I added 50 gallons capacity to my truck, 15 years ago. Hard to argue with almost a 1000 mile range.
I saw this shit with Katrina. Gas distribution gets fucked up a little after a major storm, prices go up, people panic and start filling their car every day because the media tells them there's no more gas, which causes lines and panic at gas stations and the media gets to film the crisis they created.
Yes, there's going to be repercussions when rigs get wiped out and the largest refinery in America goes off line for a few weeks, but the effects of the panic lasted far longer than the effects of the storm with Katrina. I'm hoping that's the case with this one as well.
That will in no way stop tonight's leading story on MSM from being " There will be no fuel left in America by Labor Day ".
Rigs didn't get wiped out, fill up normal, dont panic, crude plentiful, just need to light off the cracker and coker units and we will be swimming in gas really quick the arb will be filled and closed. This is not our first time at this rodeo.
Not going for any more than creating awareness here. Regardless of how it happens, fuel will be short for some period of time, and best to have it, especially in a travel intensive state like TX.

Exactly! Use gas like normal and shit settles down. Yes there will be some localized shortages because the distribution routes are all jacked up. The bulk hauling companies have to refigure where they can send gas, where it's coming from, etc, when the panic starts it blows all the computations on how much consumption the gas stations will have, etc etc etc.
For those of y'all in Texas, there's fuel headed your way out of Louisiana. I know for a fact because an old friend just reached to see if I still had a hazmat CDL to drive the trucks being sent on the FEMA contract.
The lines for gas after Katrina lasted about 4-5 days for us. A lot of that was panic buying and some was that we were the first area to get grocery stores and gas stations reopened, so we had a lot of folks coming over from the worse hit areas. If you think about that timeline, If there were a true "shortage" of gas so severe as to cause all the panic, it couldn't have possibly been fixed in 5 days (offshore rig damage, pipelines, refineries etc).
I'm burning at least 6 gallons of gas a day on my small, 4,000 watt generator.
Thing has been a godsend. My son bought it for us to use with our small camper.

Been all over east Texas today no lines. A few gallons of diesel on a lake will kill trillions mosquitoes
It looks like here the gas is back to normal for the most part, still a bit short on some of the higher grades, but most stations seem to have at least the basics.
The short gas panic/shortage gave me an excuse to do some hypermileling to the dismay of others, and I got some 54 to 58mpg runs to work and back.

When I left Ft. Hood yesterday the station we filled up at was out of premium. The three gas stations at the 195-I35 junction to Austin were all sold out. Austin airport gas station was stacked deep but still serving. That being said I was only by the stations near main roads, don't know about the ones where locals were shopping.
Fort Worth PD sent 100 officers to assist in the Houston PD to give their guys a break. They have caught and recovered a bunch of stolen guns and property (no shortage of drugs either). Getting lots of people causing issues off the streets.
