The AR15 Picture Thread

Never used, but looks pretty simple as the guy above said.

Thanks for the info.

Is there anyone that could shed some light on this or should I create a new thread for this question?
For ARs i've got a few carbon fiber proof barrels and the one on my prairie dog gun was probably the only one that was worth the extra month tbh. I put 500+ rounds of 224 valk though it in about 4 hours and it maintained good accuracy. For other ARs unless you want it for looks it's probably not worth the money.

When using steel barrels this guy is my go too. https://deadshotbarrels.com/
Between me and my close friends he has probably made us 40-50 barrels in the last 5 years.
They are custom made at a fair price so you can get whatever your heart desires. Except dimpling. I don't think he has that but you can call or email and ask. I'm not 100% sure.
We had him make everything from big more 458 socom and 450 bushmaster barrels to 204 ruger, 224 valk, 6.5 Grendel etc. All of them would shoot 1/2" groups once we made handloads for the barrels.

He is really far behind right now and recently it took me a few tries to get a hold of him so expect a few months before you get your barrel but thats pretty normal for most barrel makes right now.

Here's a custom 6mm ARC Recce carbine that I did not want to let go: SanTan STT-15L billet receiver set; Proof Research carbine fiber wrapped 16" barrel with rifle length gas system; SLR adjustable gas block; OSS 7.62 brake, threaded 5/8-24. Geissele Mk 14 rail and Super Charging Handle (SCH); SanTan Tactical BCG; titanium push pins, fire control pins, mag release, receiver end plate, tube nut, buffer stop, and grip screw from V Seven; S7 tool steel bolt stop from V Seven; TriggerTech Adaptable trigger set to 2.75 LB; Magpul K2 grip; Vltor A5 recoil system; Magpul SLR-S stock; DuraMag (I know... but it works!); Kahles K16i in Spuhr SP-3022 mount; OSS HX-QD 762 TI suppressor in the works.

For my eyes, the trick to getting a decent zero with a scope having a 2 MOA dot in the center is use a 3 MOA round target. After zeroing the scope for the customer, I decided to fling a quick three out to 200 yards. This resulted in a nice symmetric 2.5" group.

How are you aligning the gas port up? Wing and a prayer or do you use some kind of jig?

I can't speak for Tony but there's nothing wing and a prayer about it, just use a pencil to mark the center line on the barrel that aligns with the gas port and put a center line on the back of the gas black that runs through the opening for the gas tube. If you're using quality parts all you should have to do is line those two up as you install the gas block, keeping about a 1/16" off the shoulder, and snug the set screws down. A little red loctite on the set screws and it's not going anywhere.

Eyeball mostly. Hasn't steered me wrong yet.
First measure the gas block to make sure the port center is the same as your barrel port to shoulder, some GB's are meant to account for the handguard cap on two piece handguards. Then make a mark with a pencil if you feel like it and slide it on. I just measured some spare gas blocks I have, the port dia. goes from .12" to .15". So with an average barrel port diameter well under .1", you have plenty of wiggle room to be off a little and still completely cover the gas port with the block port.

The green one is a 338 Laupa mag made by Sword International that I use to shoot hogs when I'm mad mad at them.

The black/blue one is 224 Valkyrie custom build I put together on a F1 firearms chassis that I use to shoot prairie dogs when I'm mad at them.

The black/gold one is a 308 win custom build I put together on an Aero Precision monthly builder kit special because I thought the "spent brass" paint color was pretty like a shiny nickel.

Dang. So that's what being patient could net me? I might try it some time.

Read that article the other day. I usually roll my eyes hard at these articles because the builder rarely has any 3 gun experience and builds an abomination. Yours was just the opposite.

Full Factory 300BLK Noveske 10.5” Upper mated to a factory Noveske N4 lower (separated from a new, unfired 13.7” pinned Noveske Infidel factory rifle). I did a Form-1 SBR on the lower last year, so yes, it’s a legit SBR.

Not a big fan of Rail Panels, but they came with the upper (received today) and the installed brake was an ASR, which just happens to be one of the many mounts I have for my F1 suppressors.

Not exactly sure how I’ll finish this one off, but I had a spare ACOG ECOS kicking around and a spare brand new PEQ-15 still in sealed pouch, so I figured it would do for now until my BOSS-XE arrives. 😁

Gonna eventually be my go-to HD and Yote gun.

New WOA SPR 20”, rifle gassed, 1:7 twist upper. First range outing a few weeks ago was disappointing. Took it out today and put another 20 rounds of IMI 77 grain through it. Shot considerably better. I attribute the first outing solely to the shooter.

The IMI had 4 5 shot groups at 1.125, 1.06, .625, and 1.06”. Much happier with the system performance today and it gave me a glimpse of my potential behind the rifle. Would eventually like to step up my glass game at some point.

PMC 55 grain blaster ammo shot 2 5 shot groups at 2 and 1.43”. Actually happy with the 1.43” considering the ammo.

Also shout out to WOA on overdelivering. Quoted an 8-12 week lead time and shipped it to me in 6.

Looking forward to getting more reps in with this.

Newest build on a canjugal visit. Barrel is a white oak mk2.3, Razor lh 3-15, Triggertech diamond trigger
PXL_20210320_145739240.jpg

Next to Thumper. Tromix 18" lightweight 450 Bushmaster barrel, Razor lh 2-10, Geissele SSA-E trigger, and most importantly the limbsaver recoil pad. Also a home done cerakote paint job and engraving on the dust cover.
IMG_20191202_091322.jpg

And let's end with the lightweight build. 16" faxon pencil barrel, v7 rail and various other bits, aero slick side upper, faxon lightweight bcg, elftmann trigger, sub 5lbs without the red dot or light on it. Current setup is 6 lbs.

You don't need a dimple. It's nice and simplifies assembly, but carbon buildup or a little blue loctite will keep a gas block on a non dimpled barrel indefinitely.
Uh, no, it won't. I mean, if you never use it I guess...

I'll go so far as to say if it's not pinned then it's half assed too unless it's a range toy or a competition rifle where reliable operation isn't vital.

Not being an ass, speaking from experience here.

Which hipster were you in the Benro catalog? Didn't see your rifle on that site... They need a pic of you doing parkour with one at the Boaz Factory Outlet!

So what terrible calamity will befall me? I'm looking at 4 now smoothbore, dimple-less barrels that sacrificed their lives while successfully retaining their gas blocks. On two of them, I had hoped to re use the gas blocks but they required so much heat and hammering to remove them that they had to be scrapped. I guess if you have a front sight tower gas block that you use to drive stakes I can definitely see the need for pinning. If the GB is under a handguard and carbon welds itself on I don't get it.
Not sure why competitors should prefer unreliable rifles?

How do you like the Steiner and arisaka/holson setup? contemplating the Steiner with an offset in my next build but havent seen anyone else with that combo to get feedback from.

In a custom AR' build, you're free to select whatever components you want. I go for quality. I can only build fifty guns a year without having to charge the 10% Federal Excise Tax, and I want each of them to be memorable. This 5 LB 9 OZ .300 Blackout started on the bench with a billet SanTan STT-15L receiver set. There are a number of excellent billet receiver sets being produced these days. I've tried most of the big names. I don't think anyone can top SanTan Tactical's quality and appearance, regardless of price. The STT-15L receiver set is one of the lighter weight variants out there, too. No one to my knowledge makes a better .300 Blackout barrel than V Seven, either. V Seven is the ONLY outfit that uses appropriately sized feed ramps in their .300 Blackout barrel extensions. Their barrels are all SS with 1x7 twist, so shooting subsonic presents zero bullet stability issues. V Seven gas blocks fit up perfectly every time, too. This barrel is 10.25", and coated in Black KG Kote. Geissele provided the slick MK 14 9. 3" rail. A Surefire WarComp sits out front. It's a top quality flash suppressor, but if you need some other interface with your particular sound suppressor, we can work that out. The charging handle is a BCM Gunfighter 3B (long latch). The bolt carrier is from Young MFG - first forged, then centerless ground, then hard chromed. I didn't stop there and had the carrier and gas kety Ionbond DLC coated. I torque and stake the gas key myself. The bolt is the impossible to find JP Enhanced bolt Kit - also Ionbond DLC coated. Headspace is checked with PTG gauges. The barrel feed ramps are contoured and polished mirror bright. The trigger is the LaRue MBT-2, a good deal at twice the list price. Various lower receiver components - mag release, bolt release, short throw safety, and push pins - are by Dark Hour Defense (aka DHD) - all Ionbond DLC coated. The pistol grip is the Magpul K2, a favorite of mine. The pistol brace is the SBA3, with H1 buffer. The thing I like about the SBA3 is if you want to SBR the gun, it's simple to remove the brace and slide on the stock of your choice.
