The best thing about dogs...

When the whore that you are married to decides to admit that she's cheating... You can sit on the front steps with your dog's head in your lap and have him look up at you like he gives a damn.

Too personal?

Re: The best thing about dogs...

Of course it is coincidence that God spelled backward is dog. Both will wait for you a long time to return to them when you leave them, and both will shower you with unconditional and unfettered love regardless of what you do.

Yesterday morning my local gun shop called me to stop by to see if I was interested in a rifle he had just aquired. A Rem. 700 SPS in .308 with a Harris bipod, base, rings, an inexpensive 3x10 scope but an aftermarket trigger. So I was going thru my logic as to why I should not add this to the stable. A BC or Precision stock, a real scope, and a little attention to detail and who knows. All shots touched on three diffeent 100 yard targets that came with it. It was priced right.

An hour later I feed my dogs and an hour after that I noticed one of the Great Danes restess, trying to throw up and with lots of slime around the mouth which told me only one thing. I had lost two bloodhounds to bloat over the years and it is a painful way to have died when I did not catch it in time. So I called the vet and said get ready I'm coming. I wrote the rifle right out of my mind. Getting the 197 pound, really agitated, animal in the vehicle and the thirty miles to the vet took precious time as torsion had started. I wish I had the Crown Vic with lots of pretty lights on it at home but I did not. Short story is the Vet said you might be buying a $1000 hole in the ground but they would try. This morning I visited a pretty sick puppy with double IV's but he stood for me when I went in to see him. By the way it is up to $1200 now so I guess Im working on my next toy as well.

+1 Whether your gone 10 minutes or 10 hours.

Can't remember where I heard it but I always liked, "The more people I meet, the more I like my dog"

greygoose,
I tried a PM but it wouldn't go through. I hope your Dane pulls through o.k. Is bloat similar to when their stomach flips?

Our Dane, Pita, is twelve years old going on 13 and still manages to run around a little with the other two. You can tell she's getting stiff after laying down for a while but doesn't seem to hurt. Cataracts just starting to form but the vet said it's highly unlikely she'll go blind. It's hard to watch them age so quickly.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

Dogs are amazing creatures. The cruelest thing God ever did was make their lives shorter than ours. I missed Hunter the whole week, this week.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

Dogs dont care about what you own, or what kind of car you drive, or how big of house you have. They are just happy that you are there. They dont ask for much, al they want is some food in their bowl and to be pet.

I still miss my St Bernard/huskie. Luther was the coolest dog out there. I miss you bud.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

dlc356, thanks. I think he is going to be fine. I picked him up at the vet today. He was glad to see me, I was glad to see him, and the staff was damn glad to see me. They rushed him out to me, actually I think he puled the 110 pound assistant with his 197 pounds clean through the door. We still had to get the needles out of his veins on his legs.
Yes the torsion part is the twisting which cuts off blood to a lot of the organs. The vet tacked his stomach lining to his ribs to keep it from twisting again. Now that he is home I have to keep him and his bigger brother from grab ass'en and pulling out sticthes.

I put my fourteen year bloodhound down last month. He had gone totally blind about five months ago. His other issues finally convinced me I had to let go even though he was adapting. Except for the time he got into the middle of our horse herd and ran into one trying to escape. They thought they were under attack by a crazy canine and it got real ugly until I got there.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion

Re: The best thing about dogs...

i love my dogs. hell they are happy to see me after i go get the mail, lol. both were taken in as unwanted. akita have their quirks like any breed. im used to them, so i take them in.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

Humans are contemptable, dogs are real. They accept you for who you are and are there for you when need them to be. I'd rather spend a day with my dog than an hour with most of the people I know.

What kinda quirks do akita's have? Have always admired the breed and their history.

Dogs make it easy to clean up after dinner...anything that falls on the floor is gone!

Re: The best thing about dogs...

The best thing about dogs are loyality to you and the family. Keeping everyone safe from who knows what is out there and just being there when you need someone to talk to.
Dogs don't judge you for who or what you are, they just want you to be with them. I miss my Golden Murphy and my Dalmation Sadie, both were the most loving dogs around.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

The lady that started Solid Gold dog food has raised Danes for 30 or more years. She has said two things about torsion. 1. diet keeps it from happening. 2. A simple stomach staple when young will also keep it from happening. They put a stitch on the stomach and tie it to a rib. Torsion is supposed to be the #1 killer of Danes.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

My son was about 6 and had got a pretty good dose of the flu, kicked his but for the better part of a week. My wife's Heinz 57 ( aussie + border collie + god knows ) stayed right on the bed with him seemed like the entire time. She would get down to got outside or eat but it wasn't for long. 8 years later the dog still does the same thing when either my wife or my boy are sick. They make the best hot water bottles.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

My big dog had bloat. They fixed him and gave him the staple of the stomach to the abdominal wall. Couple months later he died of internal bleeding. I think the staple ripped out. Try many small meals rather than a big one.

Re: The best thing about dogs...

check out the latest AKC breed standing stats to see the popularity of your breed. We have seven Dal's in the family as well as beagles, bloodhounds and Danes. It is surprise that ten years ago Dals were about fifteeth and now they are seventy fifth. And that is a 'good thing'. A Walt Disney movie can ruin a breed. Does not matter if it is Lassie or Rin Tin Tin, etc. We had nuts calling us to do breed rescue. They wanted us to take their dogs because the kids no longer wanted them. Why, because the did not talk like in the movie. And thats no shit!
