The Fix from Q

@tinytigers is it cerakote? Looks awesome man.

Hoptic Saddle blanket. 15 bucks. I bought the MDR version since they don’t offer one for the fix (I emailed them but never heard back) and trimmed with an exacto knife. Looks pretty good to me.

There could be so many factors to that though. It’s hard to say what causes the brass particles.

Hoptic saddle blanket is probably my favorite mod so far. Between the limbsaver and the saddle blanket I’m riding is comfy style. Plus they are both black haha.

Haha sure man. The different charge weight groups were .6XX MOA and that was not trying and no rear bag either. I can tell this thing is a hammer. I’ll shoot some accuracy groups later this week. I’ve got the ammo loaded up.

I’ve got 40 147 ELDMs and 50 142 SMKs. I’ll report back soon.

@Movistar lets see some real try-like-hell groups with that thing! I’m thinking about going the same route as you with the proof barrel but i wanna see if it’s worth it first. I’m having the best luck with 142 gr SMK in mine with 22” GM barrel.

Some 5 round groups with load data would be nice to see. I don't think 3 round groups tell you very much

Who is shooting/shot 3 round groups?

If you’re referring to the last time I shot the rifle I was shooting to measure velocity with various charge weights. And for that 3 rounds is plenty for the beginning stages of load development. 3 might even be over kill.

Wasn’t referring to anyone in particular, I have just seen a lot of 3 round groups lately. I know you were working thru loads so wasn’t really even looking at those as groups. A proof 6.5 is on my short list for my next barrel so I am interested in what it does when you are actually out shooting for groups

Got to shoot for a minute today. I shot the 142 SMK and the 147 ELDM both with Reloder 16 and Peterson SRP brass. I believe the Proof Carbon barrel likes the 142 SMK better and honestly so do I. Less recoil, it goes faster and it shot great. The 147 shot fine and while I need more practice and time behind the gun I can tell you that this gun is capable but not automatic. As others have found it can expose fundamentals but it is capable. With practice I can cut these groups down. It’s frustrating to put 3-4 in one hole then get excited and pull the last one or so haha. I know you know what I’m saying.

The loads that shot the best were the 142 wirh 41.8 grn of RL16 with Peterson SRP brass. That was 2572 FPS with SD of 6.8.

The Peterson brass is REALLY consistent. They all weigh within .8 grain of each other (I’m not. A weigh and sort guy but I was curious so I weighed 40 of them) and you can see the quality. They have less capacity. Water capacity is around 50.5 grains where Hornady is way higher. Anyway.

The 147 ELDM with 40.3 grn was at 2457 FPS and SD of 10.1. Another is 40.8 is 2499 avg with an SD of 2.6

The 142 SMK got pressure signs at 42.5 grn (remember Peterson brass is low capacity) but that went 2630 avg. 42.2 was 2600 FPS.

I think I’m going to buy a couple thousand of the 142 SMK and stick with those. Felt great. Shot great. Speed is good. The 147 has a higher BC but I like the speed of the 142.

FedEx finally showed up with the new barrel wrench tool. I was able to fully strip and reassemble the rifle using just the tool. I did verify torques after tightening everything up with the new tool. It has two points to slide a 5/16” T25 bit in to use as a handle. Has a 1/2” and 3/8” drive cutouts to use on your torque wrenches. Also has a 1/2” and 3/4” boxed end wrench cutouts, useful for scope mounts and tightening or removing their suppressors. I think it’ll make a good tool to carry in the field, or even to get as the primary barrel tool if you haven’t purchased one yet. I do like how it has 4 teeth to grab the barrel but rather than 3.

Yeah I would Probably want one too. This is how mine is attached currently. I wanted the Q one but everyone said it was a no go with big proof barrels. So this was a 5 dollar amazon special. Even came with a 10-32 thread screw

Yeah I have that el-cheap Amazon special as well, but I used mine this hunting season with just a loop of paracord through the handguard. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, the cord is kind of chewed up. If I made it semi-permanent I would knock off some of the corners in the handguard slots.

Hey all - first poster but have been absorbing from this thread and others for a while (thanks for that!). I’m looking to get a Fix ideally in a 16” 6.5 Creedmoor but I can only find a rare spattering of 22” in the 6.5. Does anyone foresee any issues if I bought a 22” and had it cut down to a 16”? On another note, since I haven’t purchased yet, if anyone has any leads on a good deal please let me know ;) I ordered one from Brownell’s for $2750 using a coupon but they cancelled the order two days later (shocker!). Back to the hunt...

hey @CodeViper welcome. Hope you can find one. I love mine to pieces. My favorite gun by far. The factory 16 inch is only on new guns. Those orders are backlogged about a year according to their podcasts.

You could buy a 22 and have it cut but it would be heavier than the stock 16 as the 22 inch barrel has a heavy taper and the 16 has a light taper.

Good deals can be had but they take time and luck. If you’re impatient and want one now check tag firearms and shooting surplus. They have them on occasion.

I did just that, I bought a 22" 6.5 Creedmoor four or five months ago before they announced that they were going to make a 16.5" version. I just cut mine down last week, and I like it a lot more now. It handles a lot better now for hunting. Definitely one of my most satisfying gun purchases. I'd buy whatever model I could find the soonest, I'm way to impatient to wait.

Sexy! Thanks for sharing! I’m also impatient...seems to be the best route to go for now.

I ordered online through Interstate Guns, they called me an hour later to get my FFL info and shipped the rifle the next day. Super easy, and great customer service.

White Birch Armory is another dealer who I've seen that gets rifles occasionally.

Looks great! How is it with the APA brake?

Looks great! How is it with the APA brake?

It's actually the Insite Arms Heathen brake. I like it, it's definitely an improvement over the cherry bomb. I chose the heathen based on reviews that said it had a little less blow back/concussion for the shooter compared to other similar brakes. But to be honest, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I really don't have a use for the cherry bomb and it's taper and od threads. I'm in California, I have a higher chance of getting struck by lightning then getting a suppressor here.

Thanks man. I got my 22 inch barrel on right now. What a difference in weight...

I'd like to discuss weight when it comes to optics. I have been saving for a NF 4-16x42 ATACR and now that they have the Mil-XT that is very tempting. But its 30oz. The March 3-24x42 is the same price range. It is only 22oz so it saves 8oz and has 8x more zoom. Is that the ultimate fix optic? It comes in both F1 and F2, Mil or MOA, but the only downside is they don't have any kind of Horus or christmas tree type reticle. Which I lived without for years so I should be fine without it...

I guess the question for me is, is the Mil-XT worth 8oz on a gun where my main focus is hunting and weight and not comps. Any other options with weight/quality and price in mind? @koshkin do you sir have an opinion on the March I am considering? Thanks.

The biggest negative I've heard on the match scope is the touchy parralax, due to the high zoom ratio and smallish tube iirc.

Like you I wish they had some other reticle options but other than that it does seem like the perfect Fix optic.

The March is a very nice scope, but it has shallow dept of field and because of that you end up messing with the parallax a lot. I used one for a while, but ended up selling it largely due to that. I am not a magnification hog, so for me the ultimate Fix scopes is Tangent Theta TT315M at ~27 ounces. That is what replaced March 3-24x42 in my arsenal.

It is a very user friendly scope. While it does not look flashy on paper, it does everything I need it to do and in this approximate mag range, I think TT315M is the scope to beat. I tested the NF 4-16x42 and liked it a lot. Enough to buy it from Nightforce when I was done and spending more time with it. It is an excellent design, but I ultimately decided to stick with TT315M, so I sold the ATACR eventually.

I would just stick with the ATACR and save the weight and $$. For hunting, you can dial your necessary adjustments in plenty of time to make a shot. Horus reticles really excel in combat situations and competitions where you have multiple targets at multiple ranges that may are may not be moving. So would the Mil-XT be more versatile, yes. But is it necessary on a hunting rifle, absolutely not. Horus reticles are awesome, but the advantages they give you are far less applicable to hunting.

What are you hunting and what type of conditions do you hunt in?

Bro the atacr is more money and weighs more. I want something lighter. 30oz is on the heavier side for an optic with only 16x. The March is 22oz and 24x.

Thanks Ilya. The TT is around 36-37oz though and for only 15x? Plus isn’t it like $3k plus minimum?

Try the Mark 5HD 3.6-18. Cheaper than both, decent glass, and right in between on weight (26oz). I’m not sure that it is necessarily better than either, but it’s not a bad choice.

I was considering a March as well but the shallow focus / parallax that I saw Ilya and others mention put me off of that idea.

Look at the 52mm objective model. It handles parallax far better according to the reviews I have seen.

I’m kicking myself for passing on a 3-24X42 FMA-1. I have a 1-10X24 I use with the .308 barrel on my Fix. The glass is excellent right up there with my 5-20X50US

My bad bro... thought you were looking at 2 different NFs. I think you should be more focused on learning to shoot the rifle than if you are saving 5 oz here and there. Maybe you need something heavier

MK5 is garbage. I had that very model and it went back to Leupold for re-work. When it came back it got dumped and went with a NF ATACR. A few ounces is worth reliable repeatability. Gun is already light enough and most that hunt with it only carry it short distances to their blind or stand.

That’s cute. You NEVER have anything meaningful to contribute. You’re literally and actually the dude KB was making fun of on the podcast. You should sell the rifle and move on. Don’t you have some homework to do? I’m pretty sure my groups weren’t 2 inches like yours. Oh wait it’s cause your scope was loose right? Millennials. #ignorebutton

TT315P is heavy. TT315M is under 30 ounces. It is indeed expensive at right around $3k.

Another option to consider it is Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44

I have the MK5 on mine and really considering swapping to a 1-8x for up to 300yds where I hunt. I have another MK5 that may get swapped as well. I know NF is usually the go to but anyone have anything negative to say about Trijicon?

I have a MK5 3.6-18 on order for my Fix.. is the general consensus here that you'd go with something else? Anyone have a MK5 that they really like?

Side note: I ordered it almost 5 weeks ago. Called a few days ago and it didn't sound like they had a new batch in production yet--or a date for that matter. The longer it takes the more antsy I'm getting.
