Really?!?!
Nothing of the title "iDatabook" or anything close appears in iTunes (at least anything remotely related to shooting). The only thing I found was a Facebook page with a link to this:

Maybe some folks attending the Cup will come back with some first-hand intel on this new offering (which doesn't appear to be available to the public just yet).

I'm curious...it says it works with the iPhone but no mention of it working with the iTouch. Is it assumed that whatever works on one will work on the other? I have no familiarity with these apple devices but if I were to get one, I'd probably get the iTouch.....

It will be released end of April, beginning of May the representative said. They had screen shots, but not a working version for us to play with.

29.99. Fucking ridiculous. Drop your phone and your data is gone. I say keep the book. It's a matter of time before you battery dies or your phone gets washed. If it was a 2 - 5 dollar app I might be inclined to try. I can get a navigation program cheaper than that and might use it more.

Lose your data book and it's gone forever. Lose your phone with your digital data book and it's still on your computer - just sync your new phone and you're good to go.
I think it's an interesting idea. I have my phone with me no matter where I go, data books are another story...

$29.99 is cheap when actual logbooks are $30-$50. One of the great features is that you can even drop "pins" in google earth. I thought that $29.99 was rather cheap when you only have to buy it once and can be used for multiple guns.

I don't think that the $29.99 (plus tax) pricetage is in any way an unreasonable cost at this point based on the features that the app promises to offer. Look at BulletFlite and similar programs which many folks with iPod devices use...their prices range from $20-30 depending on the level of the program you purchase. Add that cost to an electronic data book and you have a complete ballistics solution computer, as well as ALL of your databooks for EVERY rifle in your particular safe at your fingertips at all times for approx. $60! Sounds like a WIN to me!!

Plus, if a shot is taken what goes into evidence. Your log book. I.e. Your 600 dollar phone. Still cheaper than data book?

No sniper here, just a competitive/hobby shooter. Screen giving my position away is not an issue. I'm not likely to be shooting anyone, so the evidence thing isn't going to be a factor either. Keeping data for all of my rifles together on a device that I already have with me anyways is an attractive idea for me. I've never lost a cell phone during 15 or so years of carrying one everywhere and I don't expect to lose one anytime soon.
So for me, if it does what it's advertised to do, then yes, it's still cheaper.

I guess it was "F*&^ing ridiculous" of me to purchase Ballistic FTE for my iphone for $29.00. I mean I could just print out free JBM charts off of the computer and put them in my data book. It's a free country though and I can do that if I want to, and it works pretty darn good on my iphone too.
I even plug my phone in at night to charge it up so the battery doesn't die on me the next day. I used it during the whole week of training and during the Cup and never had the battery go dead on me. I also sync my phone to my computer so my data isn't lost should something happen to my phone.
Of the 50,000 + members here and probably five times that that lurk I'm sure actual slotted snipers are a very small percentage.
Of the actual snipers I'm sure they've got enough situational awareness to know about a glowing screen at night too.
I also know the guy who is developing this program and count him as a good friend. He's also been in the field in the sniper role in several different areas over the years. He's been working on this program for over a year and believe me, he's given thought to about every scenario that can be thought of and also picked the brains of many people that have a whole lot of experience that pertains to this app in trying to make it work as well as it can.
It's thinking outside the box and innovation that keeps technology and knowledge moving forward. I can't wait to get a copy of it myself.

The price seems out of line. The ballistic programs are at least doing some calculations for your, taking into account multipe variables. But a databook is basically a glorified "notepad". The program is just allowing you to organize your data, kind of like giving you a spreadsheet to fill in instead of just writing down the numbers on your notepad. $29 for a digital databook form is ridiculous

Plus, FTE you can pretty much record all your shots for the given load already..complimented by a data book. Now, if somehow you worked in a ballistics engine, the price wouldn't seem so off.

So given the situation, a "shot" is taken and you have to turn in your log book...I guess the fact that you can print out your pages wouldn't suffice? You would have to turn in your $600 phone? My guess is most people would just print out their pages, turn them in and keep their phone.
You don't have to connect it to a computer before you can back up your data, it does it prior to closing the app, or automatically. Depends on how you set it up. The only way you would loose your data is if you choose not to back it up to the server.
If you are on a "covert op", then you should print out what you need prior to going, doesn't require your phone to do it.

As a competitive hobbyist I think its a great idea.
Nothing replaces as real data book, but this would be a convenient gadget to have. I have to order some extra round count pages just to keep thrack of the relatively few rifles I have (and am too lazy/cheap/practical) to have a data book for each.
I use 10 year old Palm PSSF ballistics program on my phone and it is great. Been trying to horsetrade into an 8G Itouch for a while so I can have tunes for work and electronic ballistics all in one.
I want!!!
As a competitive hobbyist I think its a great idea.

I don't keep databooks for all my rifles. This may be neat for the ones that I don't have a paper book for.

Two things here... You won't ever lose your data, even if it is the current round, if you upload to your mobil me account while shooting. Apple allows data to be "pushed" to and from the server via the mobile network, as long as you are in range of one. The chances of loosing your phone while out of range are slim. You wouldn't be using this app if you were in a tactical situation anyway due to the glow of the screen as someone mentioned. It always makes me laugh when I see ads for products such as "Navy Seal Watches." Believe me, if it says, "Navy Seals" or any other group on the product, they AREN'T wearing it! LOL. No operator is going to wear a watch with glowing hands or an indiglo lighted screen or an ALARM! LMAO.
But back to the app. You can sync when you get home or push to the server from the range, updating your data instantly. Then you can drop your phone, shoot it, eat it or whatever you choose to do, and the server will have updated your laptop at home anyway.
I'm pretty sure that's how "push" works with the mobile me accounts with Apple. Most people who will use this app are range shooters.

Where does anyone go without their phone these days? If it costs me thirty bucks to back up ALL my gun data and know I can access it anywhere, anytime it's worth it. I'm sure there are a lot of features that haven't been announced yet that are going to contribute to the cost as well.

Just a thought. How about both? I'm planning on buying Storm Data book tomorrow, but I'll still try this program out. I guess I'm a little old school, and a lot of Nerd in one. I like having the book, it's how I was taught, I know not one round will go through my barrel without it being logged. But I might just do it in the app too, at a later time. If for nothinh more than the ability to instantly recall something from months prior, to analize data, instantly, and exactly. This app has a place for those of us who chose to use it. I know I'm a noob, but I'll take any training aid I can get to make each shot down range as productive as possiable, be it at paper or game.

Maybe I am just a jackass. I see it's good sides but the negatives are about equal. The price is what really makes me want to avoid it. I think this program could be done just as well for a better price. Lemme know how this turns out for you guys. Maybe this is a game changer, just not sure.

Anywhere my rifle goes, my databook goes. That's the whole point of a databook. It's not for coffee table reading.
I will more that likely give it a try when it comes out. However I don't expect it to replace what I currently use.

I will more that likely give it a try when it comes out. However I don't expect it to replace what I currently use.

I have spent more than that on weather apps that I only use ten times a year. The reason is that when you need it, it's there.
The guy who built it is a former 8541. He also is the HMFIC for a particular fed law enforcement unit's sniper training program. He's has been doing this for a while, and he knows his shit.
He is building a tool that I, for one, think is valuable well beyond 29.95 or even twice that.
If it is for you, great. If not, then don't buy it. However, before spouting off about shit you know nothing about and haven't seen, you should probably think twice or even three times.
This guy has worked tirelessly in his current job to increase the effectiveness of his collegues through enhanced training and qualification programs. The changes he has made have been extremely difficult, and he has done it through dedication, hard work and a professional ethic that is RARELY seen in this day and age.
Additionally, the app is not out yet. In spite of that, he managed to sponsor the Cup this year. That means that he supported not only this site, but the community we are a part of when his app hasn't made a dime. This is another example of him supporting shooters he doesn't even know.
Either he or his representative was on site during the match answering questions and showing the screen shots of the app. Everyone who saw it loved it because of the features and ease of use.
If you want to bash it, without having seen it, go ahead and knock yourself out. That is your right. However, when it is being built by a guy with creds like his, you may want to consider the possibility that you may have to eat your words in the future. This guy has more time in the field, more time in federal service, and more time passing on knowledge to new shooters than you can imagine.
Looking at his earlier work, it has been innovative, fair and realistic. The app is the same

I don't think it is a bad price at all if its well thought out. We are so use to cheap or free apps that when we see one that is 30 bucks we recoil. Most apps have a larger base than this one will so the lower price is made up in volume of downloads.
I am glad this is coming out, I had actually looked into making a databook app with built in ballistics and I almost had a heart attack when I heard the going rates for an apple app programer. These guys are all very busy and are charging lawyer rates for programing, but the android guys are WAY cheaper and not as busy go figure.

I saw this thing at the Cup and instantly knew it was going to be a success. When I heard the price my first thought was "Holy shit that's a NO BRAINER." I've actually looked into what this does and it is worth a hell of a lot more than $29.
