Re: The Start of My Bug Out Kit
Not sure if serious.... *scratches head*
If not, well played.
IF serious, a couple critiques purely in the spirit of helpfulness:
- Dump the Maglight AND the "maplight"- will save what? like 5 pounds in the maglight alone?
Get a second smaller, high output LED- plenty of good quality lights out there, in either CR123 or common AA/AAA flavors- and I don't mean pick one from Walmart. You could also get a really small light that can clip to a hat (or your head) if you want a dedicated map light.
- I'm not sure if you'd need both those multitools- this is purely personal preference, but I've had a couple and didn't find them all that useful most times- however when they were useful, the bigger one was generally what was needed.
- You don't need all three pistols, unless you're bringing a friend in which case they can carry their own damn gun! If you MUST have more than 1, I'd say a fullsize, and then the compact would be best idea, preferably in a common caliber. Of course, I'd trade a couple there for a Glock, and then you could get a caliber conversion kit if you felt the need, but just my preference. Some better holsters might be a good idea as well.
- Dump the Bowie too- that's WAY to damn big. I do agree with having a serious fixed blade, but something along the lines of an ESEE 6 or 4 (for ease of comparison's sake) would be WAY more useful.In fact I know a lot of folk prefer a combo. Like a hatchet + 3-4 inch blade, or fullsize 5-7 inch blade + 2-3 incher (like an Izula- yes, I'm on a bit of an ESEE trip right now.
)
- Switch to an AR15 (preferably of good quality like Colt/BCM/Etc., although Spikes or PSA will do if you must. Yes I said Spikes.
). Seriously. I know that sounds mean, and I do like the AK a bit myself, but think of it this way- how standardized is the AR/M4/M16 platform here in the USA? Now how about the AK? Not so much.... Plus your scope issues will solve themselves with an AR AND you can save a little more weight if you go KISS with it.
- More water carriage, and maybe a redundant way to filter it. You have multiple ways to make fire but only one (ok, two if you count the fire, but you'll need something to put the water in that won't melt) way to purify water, which is even more important. Electrolyte replacement was a good idea though.
- FOOD! I'm getting hungry just looking at this picture!
- I'm just going to assume since you have the compass you've got a map
to go with it. I too like GPS- a LOT since I'm a sucky direction finder, but battery life.... and then where are you going to recharge it? Granted with the weight you save on dumping the Maglite and one of the pistols you could probably carry a small solar panel, but still....
Also, dependant on who/what you're buggin out from, and how much tinfoil you put on this morning, you ARE carrying a GPS on you....
- Something waterproof (like a poncho) and something cold proof- basically some sort of either shelter or wearable gear that will at least somewhat minimize any elemental factors.
I may have missed a couple things, but this is kind of rushed- I'm sure they've been covered in the other posts here.
