Now before you get all hot and bothered, I searched "sunshade" and got 500 hits, all from "Optics For Sale," so I'm not just being lazy.

I was given a 9 foot long paper-towel tube with my Falcon Menace, so I just kind of screwed it onto the "light-gathery-end" and was amazed at how much more brilliantly tactical I just became.

So what does this thing do for my rifle anyway? Will it begin to act like David Caruso slipping on his glasses as he makes a dopey comment in CSI Miami or something?

Inquiring minds blah blah blah.

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

I like them on a static range or when the sun's glare is hitting the objective, but I'm not a big fan of them in the field. They're just a bit too bulky for my taste when backpacking, and if hunting varmits I prefer the sun to be to my back anyhow.

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

All my practice shooting is facing west in the afternoon. This time of year, the sun is low enough in the sky to cause problems. I took my shade off one day and went to shoot and found I had lots of issues with the sun causing spots and otherwise washing out the image.

I run the USO honeycomb type ARD's. The ARD does what Austin referred to really well, and they really help reduce the effect of barrel mirage.
In addition of course to preventing grayout from glare.

The actual ARD aspect I'm not worried about, because I have yet to play on a two way range....

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

Pretty much does as the name implies shades your objective from the sunlight. Like Tim, most of my shooting is in the afternoon facing the west and a sunshade is pretty much a necessity.

Try this search also it is much better SH Google search

I should have bothered reading boltstop's post-I would have never bothered typing an actual response....thought the inquiry might be actual.

It may have been lighthearted, but it was entirely serious.

I have just become a member at a club where the rifle range faces south. Last time glare was a problem and I thought, "I wonder if my sunshade would provide me with any advantage."

That was 2 months ago when I last had a chance to shoot. Now that I'm off I'll be trying it out. It seems like the majority of responses have indicated it will save me some trouble.

I will not run without one if I have a choice.

I'm "this close" to milling the rail on my POF forward of my USO's "light-gathery-end" so I can use one on it:

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

In addition to minimizing the effects of mirage and glare, a sunshade prevents reflection off the objective lens from disclosing your position should you be in real live honest to goodness tactical situation.

that sucks... nice looking rail too but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!!

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

My bet would also be for barrel mirage, though usually it's a strip of cardboard stuck to top of barrel
Epictetus quoted on SH? I knew this was a a high class sight.

Oh, I was exaggerating. The aluminum sunshade that comes with the Menace is about 3" long and seems a little big. I haven't shot with it yet so I don't know if it will goof with the field of view.

Re: The sunshade and its use - what can you tell me?

i use them to keep glare down when shooting. I have not had the finger print problems but I do use butler flip ups to keep unwanted lint, and other crap off the glass while walking thru woods or traviling and raining..
