Think I’m gonna sponsor a Team

I'm curious to see how the progression over the season is for the shooters and the hit percent from first to last match improves.
As a mid pack guy at best, my biggest nemesis is variable switchy wind, and having the time and peacefulness to track impacts and adjust on the clock. The shooters who consistently destroy me are really good at this. I think that improving this learning/performance curve would have the biggest payoff for reasonably sound basic shooters.

It’s also about building a competitor as well as creating a process you can replicate for others to use.

Nah, I don’t need a top 25 guy, I want a bottom 25 shooter with drive and some free time
You rang?

I got last or second to last in my series. Lost 160lbs this last year and hit every local match I could except when I went on vacation.

It would be neat if the team was assembled (maybe annually) on a common theme.

One year it would be full of people who need to work on wind.

The next year it would be full of people who need to work on being efficient so they don't time out on a stage.

Etc. Etc...

You guys are too good, I’ll run you two if I want to bring steel home.

Maybe if you want to hit a specific match, we can talk, but as far as my thinking, you all are the Ferrari and I need a Jeep.
I'm an 87 escort wagon, front wheel drive, red nogahide seats, and 4 sweet 11" tires. Two of my doors don't open and three of my windows don't close, but at least I get 11mph, which is known as "double digits" in the industry.

I’m down 70 pounds , cataracts and 56 years old. Competing with these kids is crazy. 😂 I just try and beat MY previous scores and get to double digit impacts.

I’m with you brother, 76, got my weight under control, 185 thank you very much, have outstanding eyesight considering. I nearly lost vision in my left eye last December to a stroke behind my eye. (20/16 and on some days I can get to the 20/12 chart, can you believe it?) , Am proud as punch, if I can get some hits on targets at centerfire matches. (Rimfire, much better). Still gonna keep at it. Heck, what do I have to lose. I’m already the week in and week out challenger for the Red Lantern award at every centerfire match.

But at the last rimfire match, I got a score of 56, yep 56 actual hits but I did get some accommodations due to my age and lack of physical abilities. Still a 70% hit ratio of shots I was able to take. Wow, sure beats my hit ratio at centerfire.

Somehow, I don’t think I’ll measure up to the standards to make Frank’s team.

I’m not the bottom 25, I’m worse….

Sorta like the little fellow in our 7th grade English Class. We had to find one error in each of the ten sentences. He missed every error but made corrections in the areas or two sentences that were already correct. Mr. Dunn was generous, and give him a score of…..-15. Yep Maynard G. Crabs, it’s ok to ask the teacher to bring your scores up to an EVEN ZERO.

Having never attended a PRS match, do they encourage or discourage spectators?

Is it even possible to be a spectator?
The only problem with being a spectator at a one day local match, is, you might get invited to shoot some of the targets after the match is over. Be prepared. :D.

Spectating is no problem at any match I have ever seen. For most enjoyment a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope, both mounted on a tripod will allow you to see not only what is being shot at but also the hits and misses downrange. Ear muffs and shooting glasses are necessary. A hat with a bill is a good thing as well.

What’s important when competitors are shooting, about to shoot, or wrapping up their equipment after a stage,it is a very bad time to approach and ask questions. Also, asking the range officer any questions while he/she is working is really bad form.

So, be careful when you approach a competitor or range officer. They are very busy and have a lot of things going on at that time.

Kinda thinking about it, and I have several thoughts, I’m good like that

Translate a sponsorship into more of a mentor program, give them drills to try, use for practice, talk about the previous match in way that goes beyond the conservation you have with your buddy, to include a diagnostic element to it. Think gear, caliber, stocks, and how to help better improve the relationship between; you and the gear.

This sounds like a dream come true opportunity for a lot of folks. Myself included. Mediocre shooter getting back into the game after a few years hiatus. Thankful I have a great facility to visit and get training in. Hoping to become the best shooter I’ve ever been by end of 2025.

Showing up in our condition is a win. Speed is what kills me. I can hit upwards of 80% of my shots, I just take too long to set up. (still mental mistakes like "hey dumbshit, try dialing your dope") I may switch to left-handed just to use my left eye which is significantly better vision. I may go down, but I'm goin down swinging. ALso struggle with that sloped roof--man we just don't bend like those youngsters.

I'm not senior squad yet (50), but having spent 20+ years at 400 lbs, my physical condition is there. I may weigh 240 now, but it still feels like 400.

Im putting some cash aside as I can for your class at sureshot. I’ve competed and RO’d over the last 5 years and learned a ton. I’m much better off then when I started out. Went to quite a few matches last year. Did well in some, not so good in others. Logged my mistakes and learned from seasoned guys. I really want to compete on a higher level in 2025.my long term goal is to travel with my wife and kids, tour national parks and shoot more matches in awesome places.

I really prefer NRL hunter and other find it,range it, engage it matches most. Planning to travel and hit as many NRL hunters as possible this year, shoot Ted’s IPRM matches, a few of the prs matches and a couple gas gun and 2 gun matches.

My wife and I love to travel and we frequently RO matches together (mammoth, NRL and others).

I’m really wanting to kick my training and competing up a notch this next year. If you end up opening applications or hosting some sort of tryout, I’d love the opportunity to give it a shot and to meet you.

You can sponsor the old lady. She is in CO, has free time and is looking to shoot hunter matches next year, mostly the Cameo ones, but pueblo, springs, canon city, CRC are in play too. Great learner and wouldn't be the worst thing to have in videos, just sayin.

So what he's saying is he needs solid mediocrity like me and possibly either @Mr. F and @Long Range 338 lol

I would be open to this. Local to Colorado, shoot the wyco matches at least once a month, if not more depending on work. And solid midpack with no sort of consistency yet in the top 5

As I noted and the more I look at this,

I think I can balance a true sponsorship with a virtual to help guys & girls

I’m getting a great response there are some top tier competitors out there

For a few of the local shooters we can open the range and training up to help even if it’s not a official sponsorship

I think a few pre-announced open range days will be nice

I am in colorado and shoot a ton of regional matches and a few 2 days. My biggest obstacle is a range to train at. I would love the opportunity

I'm easily a bottom 25 shooter and have been up for retirement 4 years ago. This could be the incentive I've been looking for. If not, I have 1.5yrs leave built up. So, free time is when I say it is. I've only shot one 1day match and shouldn't have too many bad habits to correct. That is, if you're down with having a 30yo trapped in a 55yo body from Mississippi on your team.

Not sure if this is where to contact you, but I'd be interested in virtual if you have a spot for an older lower tier dude? Even as a part timer

Pffft you sound like the ladies in weight loss support. OH NOES ME HAIR IS FALLING OUT!!

Yeah I licked that problem years ago.

Never been with the ladies at weight loss support so I will take your word for it. Lol

I was going more for this.

Total side track, but yeah weight loss is all chicks (95%). And even as a former fat guy (I sill feel fat) it was a lotta NO THANKS! Hell I'll take getting yelled at by a drill seragant over "my hair is falling out!! I'm always cold!!" Me too but i discovered this thing called a hat and these awesome things called socks. Swimming in winter still sucks though. Who's bright idea was that. Gotta swim fast so you heat up.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Curious as well as how the virtual mentoring would go. Would these be like personalized videos or just broad "this is how your supposed to do it" types. At my home range we have probably 6-8 guys that actively compete in PRS. There is quite a mix of experience there as well from 3-4 matches to 100+. The problem with translating that knowledge down is the ability to coach. Are the virtual trainings to be shared or just kept and see the personal progression?

This is pretty cool to hear! As a low/mid pack shooter in a region with some of the best PRS shooters (e.g. Sanoski, Preston, Baker, Slade, Zane, Beck, etc), I feel pretty good about being low/mid pack among all of the competitors here. I've definitely noticed moving up the rankings just from the bottom to low/mid takes tons of practice, spare time and money. None of which I have an abundance of.

An important note, whomever you pick must be coachable. If they aren't willing to absorb the coaching provided to them, then it's a worthless endeavor.

As a Captain of several very successful Fclass teams over the years. I applaud your interest in starting a team with "middle of the road" dudes. Anyone can hire gunslingers. Nothing more satisfying than bringing a couple guys along and making them top tier competitors.

You can't replace work ethic. If they don't have it, it's a waste of time.
Hubris will ruin a team at some point quickly. Look for humble dudes that are humble in their everyday lives.

Unsolicited advice from a random dude on the internet priceless!!......back to lurking.

I absolutely love the idea of this.. from SE Alaska, I have to fly to every match, and the last year going to a handful helped me iron out what should be a great schedule of 8 or so matches for 2025, should be a blast.. hope to see your guy(s) out there

That does widen the draw for sure. It also would be interesting to see which type of support helped shooters the most. Up here in Canucastan, outside of southern BC and eastern Ontario, travel cost is the biggest challenge. Quite a few matches scheduled in ‘25 north of the 49th though.
Travel cost is one the biggest hurdles I have coming out of SE Alaska as well... Actually I hope to hit up Botha's 2day PRS match in BC on one of my trips in the coming season.

Ok Quick Update,

I am moving forward, I just need to get past the Holiday first I have a few thoughts and honestly think I can approach this two ways,

Material Support
Virtual Support

As well for those local who have asked about the sponsorship, regardless of your condition in this, I am going to have open range days in Fort Morgan for people to attend. We can community up, and work on your precision rifle skills.

How I see this aside from the Material Support part, is filling in the gaps. When the questions come up, or changes happen, we want to have a resource to answer those questions.

I will reach out over the next week or two and start reaching out, then we'll move forward for 2025.,

Thanks to everyone who reached out, lots of interest in this which has me wanting to open the door wider

Cheers,

I had a conversation with a potential sponsor and they asked me some very pointed questions about the workings of this support.

I am not in a hurry to just sign people up, I want to work on best practices and then at SHOT look at what manufacturer support we can get.

There has to be two sides to the street, in short more than a picture of you with a box you took off the prize table. East stuff can be very meaningful.

But also I want the support to follow a best practice model. I think creating a pipeline for "Competitors" to follow a path, and work towards a goal using a best practice approach will help set a standard that I feel is currently missing.

So I am formulating a plan, a process, and a set of goals.

I am interested in what you feel is a best practice you would like to see or a model you think works ?

This is an amazing thing.

I do feel this is 60% shooting and 40% building the confidence to make the mental part of the competitions work for each shooter. The 40% is the hardest to overcome, but can be with tons of practice and hands on coaching, or atleast for me it was. I'm not a top tier shoot by any means but someone guiding me via film or in person as I shot stages helped more than anything. It was really most of the small things that helped, get your elbow in.. stop over loading the Barricade and rifle, Trigger control and follow trough... then the best was ""slow down to hurry up". You can have the mental part undercontrol and still finish strong with middle of the road gear.

I've coached 4H BB teams and percision air rifle teams and have helped in 22nrl/prs with new shooters. After the confidence to make the shot under pressure Is in the relaxed state all else will fall into place and the basics in the shooter form and stage plan can be worked on.

Oh man, I would be so keen on a virtual mentorship or similar if you're taking overseas volunteers. I'm shooting a subset of F-class called Sporter Hunter. From the prone with field rifles, bipods and rear squeeze bags. It's all about them fundamentals.
