I'm shooting a 6.5-20 Mk 4 right now but I want a better /matching reticle. I'd like to sell the Leupold and not have to pony up much more $. I've read lots of positive reviews on the Vortex, I,m just not sure of the Longevity of the scope. I'd hate to find out that I downgraded. I shoot steel mostly and would like to get as far as my 260 will go. It needs to be durable and that's my one hangup.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

Hello JaredCO. Welcome and congrats on your first post. I'm new here as well. I'm in the same position as you with the same scope. I've decided to go the other direction. I'll be replacing mine with a Nightforce MOA/MOA when I can scrape together the coin. I have a Vortex Viper PST too, and while it's a great scope for the money I think you'll find that it is that step backward you mentioned. Just my opinion ... there are those on this forum who love the Viper PST and have gone to it exclusively. I'm sure they'll chime in. Good luck!

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I can understand your concern that the Vortex Viper may be a step back and that is a possibility. I have not actually gotten my hands on the Mk4 and PST to compare them side by side. However, the longevity of the scope is not something you should be concerned with. This is because Vortex's customer service is as good as it gets. If there is ever a problem with the product it is well known that they will make it right.

With that said, I would like to ask you why you are changing optics in the first place? Is it just the desire to have a matching reticle or do you really want a higher quality scope. If the second is true then unfortunately the only way to do this is to spend a little bit more coin. My suggestion would be to check out the "used optics" section here on the hide. It is common for people to sell nice scopes (NXS for example) at quite reasonable prices.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I have a 2.5-10 PST and a 10x Mark 4, and side by side the PST is the hands down winner as far as clarity and function. I have been using Leupolds for 10 years now and I have even owned a Nightforce. IMO for the money you cant beat the PST and I plan on using them on all of my rifles except my first full blown custom that is getting built which I think I will stick a NF on.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I know it's more money, but have you thought about sending your Leupold to the custom shop for a make-over? In a few months, Leupold will be offering M5 knob (0.1 mil) conversions. M5 knobs and a TMR reticle is a tough combination to beat

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I wouldn't consider a PST a step backwards. The glass in a Mark 4 may be a little better (subjective), but the features of the PST are well worth it. I don't think you'll have any durability problems with the PST, and even if you do, you'll be hard pressed to find a better warranty or customer service than Vortex offers.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I really am looking for more features. I bought the Mk4 for my first ever long range gun, not knowing Much about moa/mil. After shooting the SRM in Raton I'm hooked. I would like a mil/mil system and ffp reticle. I'd like to get my hands on a PST to check it out but their dealer locator is worthless to me.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

6-24x50 FFP Mil/Mil on my 7WSM for about 100 rounds so far. I know that isn't a lot but I am impressed so far. Very nice scope. I have 11 NF scopes right now, so I guess you know my favorite.
I would not hesitate to get another PST though.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

Anybody in the Colorado Springs area with one of these willing to let me check it out. The deciding factor will be the glass and the feel of it.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

If you're considering the PST, you should at least check out the Sightron SIII line too. They are comparably priced and the Sightrons are very nice scopes.

I do, however feel that your wish to get into a "better" scope than the one that you have now without spending more money is unrealistic. When you want better, you usually have to pay for it.

If I were you, I'd keep my eye out for a used Nightforce. It's a good bang for the buck in upper tier scopes. You can make a pretty good deal on an older model that doesn't have the High Speed turrets or Zero Stop. I'd take a SFP NF over a FFP PST any day.

The Vortex warranty is killer and they've honored it every time I sent something in to them and others that I know have had similar experiences; but the warranty isn't worth a crap when you're not shooting because someone else has your scope.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I went from a MK4 to a PST and have not looked back. IMO it is much better all around. Clearer Glass, zero-stop, and the list goes on. Good luck.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

Well I got reply from Vortex saying 3+ months out on the pst's so I guess I'll just shoot my junky Mk4 for a while longer.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I wasn't going to post, but I felt I would be detracting from the HIDE if I didn't mention my experience with a vortex viper pst 6-24 ffp.
After 300 rounds sent to various distances, I've concluded that it is MORE optic than I expected for the money.
I expected a low-mid end optic. Now I think I either got a Wednesday build or they are the best value for the dollar. The image is crisp at distance until you get to 24x, but, I think mirage has more to do with the distortion. (It has been unseasonably hot here lately)
Further, I was pleasantly surprised by the usability of the settings for the illuminated reticle in dim light conditions. And again surprised by how much of the reticle actually illuminates.
I bought the PST as a temporary hold over on my new stick until the S&B MSR reticle becomes available in the states. I intended to eventually sell it even before it arrived.
Now it's not going anywhere!
But you may see the Leupold it will replace.
Best of luck.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I was looking at this same scope about 3 days ago l really liked the glass and features in it l ended up getting the Razor only because my wife said its my Christmas and anniversary present all in one lol. but bang for your buck you can't go wrong with a Vortex PST for that kind of money.

I can assure you that this is not the case. As we have no control over dealers and when or who they ship these scopes to when they do receive them. Although I would bet that there are a few dealers out there that do have one or two in stock.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I have a FFP one as well as access to a dealer with a few in stock. PM me if you are interested.

Not trying to violate any rules here, just helping those out that need to find one.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

Go with the PST. I purchased one from Liberty optics (6x24x50 SFP) and love it. I have it on a 308. I do not shoot as much as most people do on here but wanted a good scope and not break the bank. The PST fills the bill.

Re: Thinking about a Vortex PST 6-24x

I have a 6-24X50 PST in MRAD and its been only mounted on my .338 Lapua and so far after hundred + rounds it still tracks perfect. I have several Leupolds and love 'em! I can't tell for sure but some days the vortex seems a tick better than the Leupold. Just my 2cents.
