I used to have perfect hearing....so good that they used to accuse me of fakeing the audio tests they gave us. Then a couple of years ago I went out shooting with some pals and forgot to put on the hearing protection. Only took one trigger pull on the M-82 and now I hear this high pitched whine all the time.
The local sherriff had it so bad he couldnt talk or even sleep. One night he put a 12 guage in his mouth and pulled the trigger. I guess that fixed it but what a shame.

Decades of construction racket, tools such as hammer drills and jack hammers as well as gunshots have given me two delightful pitches, one for each ear!
So yeah, there is a lot to be said for hearing protection.

I've already got a mild ringing in my right ear almost constantly at 22. That's what years of farm work, industrial plumbing and shooting do with minimal protection.
