Thoughts on Magpul PRS Lite?

I've never liked adjustable AR stocks for precision shooting, even the ones that lock, as they usually still have some movement in them after a while. Getting the correct cheek height is also very important for precision shooting. Going from a little strain in your neck to none is still a noticeable difference. Coming from a B5 SOPMOD on this build to this PRS Lite is a night a day difference (with respect to precision shooting that is)

I've never had a problem with adjustable stocks, but it's a personal thing, everyone is different. On adjustable cheek pieces, I've always felt that if I can shoot irons without a cheek riser and no neck strain, a magnified optic shouldn't pose much of an issue either. Cowitness height is about ~2.6" with irons and red dots, so when I move to a magnified optic that has a scope height of 2.6-ish", what do I need a cheek riser for? That's where my headspace is at but maybe I can get one of my editors to foot the bill for a review on one of these.

My son was laughing at one of my old builds.

It's got seven different shades and types of black finish, at least one of them BBQ grill black. Right strait from a wallmart spray can. Not to forget magic marker to cover the relief in the handgaurd I filed in there so I could get to agb.

Then there is the fde stock because everyone was out of black.

I gave up having nice things.

My son put vice jaw prints on one of my barrels, I was pissed.
Now I have to find my BBQ paint again.

I was curious about this too. IIRC the SR25 tubes are adjustable like a carbine tube vs a fixed rifle length tube like you would use on the regular PRS.

Negatory on using a PRS extended buttpadd. So Magpul makes 4 different extended buttpads: PRS, PRS2 , MOE-SL, MOE/CTR.

I wasn't sure, so before opening I compared them and the screw holes didn't line up. I returned it.

You could buy a generic
"limbsavor " type butpad and trace around oem pick up holes.

It's not that difficult.

Well, that was fun while it lasted. Mine had significant wobble in the cheek riser, but apparently tightening the mechanism a little more wasn't the answer. Something popped surprisingly easy and now I guess I'll see if Magpul is willing to fix it up. Seemed pretty nice other than the wobbly cheek riser.

Hopefully they take care of it quickly. Magpul customer service is pretty decent though. I once broke the latch on my first vltor imod about 5 mins after taking it out of the box. The quoted wait for replacement from VLTOR was not fun.

Ordered mine on Sunday and got it Thursday. The stupid FedEx guy decided it was ok to drop it right in the middle of my driveway 20 feet from a covered car port, while it was raining. When I got home late the outer box was soaked. Good thing I didn't order electronics or something. If I did maybe he would have done a drive by and just tossed it out the window into the ditch on the way by.

got mine today, everything on it is pretty tight. Its mounted on the VLTOR A5 tube, if that matters.

I tried the LOP just to verify that it works, however, the fully closed setting seems dead on for me.

tried the cheek riser (will mess with it more when I figure out the optic for the rifle), works decent too. Tool-less adjustment would have really been the bees knees for this thing, but I guess you cant have it all for $120.

I ordered the milwaukee m12 stubby impact wrench and charger kit for the Home Depot holiday promo pricing, they shipped it as it sits in retail packaging (no outer or brown box at all). My fedex guy left that sitting on the driveway, like a giant red flag waving "take me".

If I didnt have cameras, I doubt that would have made it past an hour of sitting there.

Got my lower all finished up. Found out this PRS Lite is not compatible with certain buffer systems even if they are labeled 'mil spec'. I bought a PWS Mil Spec buffer tube, end plate, buffer, etc and none of it works with the PRS Lite. First the end plate has a protruding QD socket. That's a no go no matter who manufactures it. Also the actual buffer tube doesn't work either. With the PWS buffer tube the channel that has the 6 position stops in it, it just drops straight off. Other buffer tubes have a slant transitioning from the tube to the channel. The PRS Lite indexes off of the slant to hold the stock snug up against the castle nut. With the PWS Buffer Tube the stock would slide around no matter how you do it.

I ended up swapping buffer tubes with another AR of mine so all is well.

The picture below shows one of the problems I encountered. The other picture is the kind of buffer tube you must have.

Yeah, I just ran head long into the end plate issue also. I'm gonna swap the end plate out since I never use that QD location for a sling.

The buffer tube retainer is shaped like that to absorb the wear from carrier tilt in piston guns.

In their defense their buffer tube system works with every single other stock on the market. The PRS Lite is the only one that I am aware of that has an internal indexing point like they do. To be clear even the PRS Lite fits it fine. The problem is the way the PRS Lite operates, it essentially has more moving parts and parts that are supposed to be permanently stationary. The part that is supposed to butt up against the end plate is supposed to be stationary, but because there is nothing to trap the part that locks it into place you can slide it back until it hits the hard stop even after it's tightened down. Any other 'Mil Spec' stock will work on the PWS buffer tube.

The scalloping is quite popular these days. 3 of the last 4 buffer tubes I've purchased all have that. It makes installation very very nice. There are a whole bunch of companies doing that. The scalloping on the end in my opinion is an improvement in every way. Given though scalloping is probably not written in the military specs from way back when.

Upper is Uintah Precision UPR10 chambered in .308. Still need to get optics and ammo. My first .308 and first bolt-action. Can't wait to get this completed and head out to the range.

Mine didn't lock up quite as tight as my Gen 3 PRS which was a good thing. I had to file away material and use a mallet to install the Gen 3 PRS when I first installed it. It was still very tight when I went to remove it. The PRS Lite was snug but not overly tight when installing it. It feels just as secure when installed. I actually like the feel of the PRS Lite better than the Gen 3 PRS when shouldering g the rifle.

I would say they are more gripes then anything else but like the aforementioned issue with the receiver end plates. When they say “mil spec receiver tubes” they mean a full mil spec set up down to the end plate, they could’ve been a little more clear on that or designed around the fact many end plates have a QD in it. Then there’s how Magpul generally nickel and dimes you on accessories and to run a sling the way I want to I need to spend some more money on their sling mount (Type 1 BTW). My biggest gripe is probably the scallop at the rear to access the check rest tension screw, it’s kind of a pain in the ass on mine. Good LOP for me is with it collapsed all the way in and the scallop that’s supposed to give clearance for a wrench is just right to keep me from getting any of my 5/32” Allen keys in there to actually turn the screw. Also, the angle from the top of the butt pad to the tension screw is just so that I can’t get a good purchase with my ball end Allen wrench and it slips. Maybe I’m not holding my mouth right but for now I extend the LOP all the way back to give me room to make the cheek height adjustment and then push it back in and tighten it down when I’m done.

Overall I think it’s a great stock for a precision rifle and I’m looking forward to using it and comparing it to my Arisaka Defense enhanced SL-S stock.

I would say that it should depend upon your application. I have a few Std PRS stocks that are on belly guns and other precision oriented rifles. But they are heavy for other applications. I’m trying one out for a lighter rifle in 350 Legend. I’ll see how that goes.

What is the length of pull?

With the PRS Lite fully extended, the distance between the edge of the recoil pad to the trigger is 15.75-ish inches on my AR308. Kind of hard to see in the photo, since I'm leaning to take the picture and not directly over the ruler and the stock.
