thoughts on the 6.5x284 for f class

Just noticed 300 and 500 yards. I would do something easier on barrels. The velocity will be no halp at the shorter ranges you are shooting. 6.5 creedmoor maybe?

I wouldn't bother with the 6.5 X 284 for short range, you'd only get maybe 1500 rounds before the barrel is toast. My last barrel looked like alligator skin six inches up from the chamber after 1200 rounds.

Maybe something like the 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5 X 47 will the newer 123-130 gr bullets.

It's odd you couldn't get a 6BR to shoot well. Everyone I know using one, admittedly all customs, has had success with it.

I have 223s, 6BRs, a 6 dasher, a couple 6.5x47 and currently two 6.5x284(on my 12th? Barrel). No question the 6BR is going to be the winner at 300. At 500 the Dasher may edge it out. I have to get past 600 yards for the 6.5x 47L to be inside my 6BRs and the BRs don't take me out of the black from a sling. 6.5x284 is relegated to 1k and only when it's windy or I'm shooting a regional or championship. If it's calm~ish the 47L, Dasher or BR get brought to the line. Or a Palma rifle.

I'm curious about the details of your 6BR not shooting well. I've done three and all one them were ridiculously easy to shoot in the .3s from a rest. Even with round forearms.

for 600 and in you could build a specialty 233. 6.5 twist 32" throated for 90s but it's probably gonna be a picky bitch where 99.9% of all the 6BRs will shoot 29.5gr Varget under a 107SMK with a 450M sub half MOA all day long. Well, at least to 80-100 rounds.

Yep, something was wrong if you couldn't get a 6BR to shoot.

223 wouldn't be bad at 500Y, just not in the same league compared to 6.5-284 in the wind.

Same with me, 6.5-284 is accurate, has very good brass but recoil is getting up there/unbraked and my barrel only lasted 1200 with a set back at 800Y.

I'd choose Dasher.

6.5/284 used to be the king of the hill, now it has given way to 7mm; ironically the straight 284 using Berger 180 or Lapua's. There are other 7 options like the RSAUM, WSM and 280rem. Mid range scores are typically clean with high X counts unless there are incredible winds. Your caliber selection would need to take that into account.

6mm and 6.5 don't have the wind bucking ability 7's do and are seen less often. The group is right about the 6br or more specifically the Dasher it is incredibly accurate less recoil, less powder. lots of fun

barrel life is approx the same for all F open rifles 800 to 1200 rds for peak accuracy.

223 is F/TR caliber not F open and you would be really disadvantage shooting 223 in open class even with the 90's

All the best
