Thoughts on Weatherby Model 307 (7MM PRC)

I've been doing some research the last two months on the 7MM PRC, and I'd like to purchase a factory rifle chambered for this round. Obviously, it's so new that there aren't a ton of options out there, but the Weatherby Model 307 has definitely caught my eye with what it brings to the table, especially at a low price point. Personally, I have zero experience with Weatherby or this particular rifle, so I was really hoping that the community here could provide some thoughts / feedback. Thanks!

are you upgrading everything or planning to shoot it how it comes from the factory? target or hunting? both? i'd look at seekins or the new x bolt 2 if looking in that 1k-2k factory price range for a hunting rifle. can't remember where i saw it but i saw someone said the factory stock on the 307 was shockingly flimsy. can you fondle it anywhere before buying?

It wasn't a 307, but I played around with a Weaterhby 6.5RPM in the LGS the other day, man that bolt was terrible. The 307 is a different action and I think it's a neat platform, especially in the HNT26 stock. I would have to handle one in person before buying it though.

Good question about modifying it, it was really the 700 compatibility that caught my eye. I would likely put it in a chassis and possibly replace the barrel. The factory trigger seems to have favorable reviews, but I might swap that as well. I would classify my usage as primarily range, but be able to flex into a hunting role occasionally. I'm surprised that you read that the stock was flimsy, the few reviews that I've found on it said that it was pretty stout.

I'll probably have to call around far and wide to find one in stock, they seem to be pretty rare. I was stunned by how few YouTube reviews there are on them.

At least do some research on the Seekins before buying. Proven models in 7PRC. Great stock ergos. Great accuracy and great company in addition to good looking rifles.

I did actually see that, but if I were to go full custom, I'd probably just start with an Origin action.

Yes, they are a shit company living off a name’s legacy, making overpriced Fudd junk rifles in outdated cartridges that look really pretty, but are ultimately less accurate than most $500 rifles today…

That’s probably gonna piss off a lot of the 55+ Fudd crowd here, but facts are facts, and my opinion is based on my personal experiences with a factory defective brand new Weatherby Accumark .257 Wby rifle with about 75 rounds down the barrel. It started randomly throwing shots, and their (lack of) customer service and support, and how they called me a liar, despite having a professional gunsmith scope the bore who confirmed the bore was caving in and had developed over 10 tight spots in it. And when I called Weatherby, they essentially told me to fuck off when they said “You can send it in, but we’re NOT going to replace the barrel or warranty it, and the new barrel will be out of your own pocket”, and then when I said that was bullshit, He said, “We don’t let defective rifles leave our plant…” Then he hung up the phone on me.

I’ve handled a few of the 307s - the action isn’t anything special. Very rough cycling. I think you can do much better with your money.

Seekins is well worth the price. Both my rifles (Havak and Element) have been incredibly accurate right out of the box.

Something else to consider...

Some of the big box gun stores like BassPro and Cabelas stock quite a few of the Seekins rifles.
If you have something like that around your location, it would be worth your time to put hands on one prior to committing. The feel of the stock is a very individual preference and I think Seekins did a pretty good job of nailing the ergos and performance of their stocks.
You don't want to buy something that you aren't comfortable handling regardless of the maker or how "accurate" it is supposed to be.

Honestly, I've never read anything negative about the Origin action besides the lead time.

Agreed. BS on not function checking the gun.

That would be the least of my concern anyway. Triggers are SUPER easy to adjust or swap out very affordably.
Stock shape, grip etc. is more set in stone with those type rifles.

I think it would be worth the 1hr drive just to handle the stock and shoulder the rifle.

at the very least OP before you buy type the sku in on gun.deals site to check the cheapest online price
