Hey guys, I have a blank that I need to get chambered, threaded and crowned for a stiller action and I think my local smiths prices have gotten pretty steep. What is the usual price that is going for a thread/chamber/crown job on a precision action and a regular chamber that he has a reamer for???

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

i was quoted $250 to thread and chamber a barrel that i provided, and another $175 to thread the muzzle for a badger fte brake. ended up buying the reamer and doing it myself on my lathe. have less than $400 into it with action wrench, range rod, reamer, go-gage, and a nice mitutoyo precision dial indicator. also some misc stuff like parting blades, etc

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

I normally charge $200.00 to thread, chamber, crown, polish or beadblast a barrel. Same price if I do or dont have the reamer. $50.00 to thread the muzzle of a barrel.

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

Thats kinda what I figured. He used to charge that but I went there a few weeks bak and he wanted 400 to thread/chamber/crown. It pissed me off cause I felt like he was skinning me, especially since he has done ALOT of work for me and I have sent him ALOT of work. Its a shame but I guess I wont be doing business there anymore. What really sucks is he does good work and is about 35 miles from me. I will be looking for a good smith!!!

maybe he is under the impression you want the muzzle threaded too? that was my first impression when i read your thread title.

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

I charge 200 for a std barrel
250 for fluted.
Adding a brake is 125
threading the muzzle for a can is an additional 75

400 seems a bit high for a fitting job. There are those out there that start at 300 as the baseline for the same work.

I just can't rationalize it and I have prolly the most expensive machine in all of barreling land for custom gun work.

The market bears only so much.

Good luck and hope you get it sorted out.

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

When people (smiths) have as much work as they want the prices start going up so the volume eases off. When the work is slow they are usually receptive to a bit of discussion on the price. But this situation (and the fact I need a hobby really badly) is why I started down the DIY gunsmith road.

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

My prices have actually lowered a bit with the volume increase.

Investing 5K in new tooling/fixtures for blueprinting allows me to lower the consumer end cost as I can be more efficient now.

Hopefully as the barreling work comes online (meaning more streamlined) I can reduce it too.

Re: Thread, Chamber and Crown

I have Howard Pitts a few miles(15 min) down the road from me. He is not a general gunsmith- his specialty is precision rifles. I used to use a general 'smith, but his prices were up there with GAP and Howard.

The performance of the end products are telling.
